Musical Theatre -

Didn't see any threads about this, so thought I'd give this a shot.

As someone who loves to do acting, and has done acting on stage, I'm always curious to see if there are any other fellow Theater fans, whether they be actors as well, or just like seeing shows, who want to talk all things theater.

Fuck yaaaaaaaas.

The last musical I performed in was You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown as Lucy, I still remember all of my lines.

Favorite musicals gotta be Parade, Barnum, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Company.

Dabes.

Well, I have to admit to absolutely adoring Starlight Express. That said though, it's easy to fuck up. You really need a large stage, or you really can't make the most of the fact that everyone's on skates. A Custom-fitted theatre helps a lot too, which made the performance I saw disappointing. But then, it was touring, so I appreciate that would have been expensive.

Anyway:

I've heard that the Las Vegas cast of Starlight Express has gotten considerably good reviews, is that where you saw it, or was it elsewhere?

No, it was in London on the first night of the last UK tour.

And on the subject, I can't help but think Pearl gets a lot more sympathy than she deserves. But she's pretty, so snatching her friend's man/locomotive from her as soon as he starts winning races, leaving the one she was already with and treating Rusty like shit can all be excused.

When I was in college we only did plays, and I asked why we would never do musicals. It turned out the college did musicals for 20 years straight and all the staff there was tired of doing them.

I was still annoyed because I've always wanted to work on a musical. Eventually I'd like to create an animated project that is a musical to compensate.

My girlfriend went to a college in the city that was pretty much in the same boat. The drama program there only did plays, and would always pick the most obscure, arty plays. Literally, they'd do plays that only the biggest drama buffs would know, and would charge 30 dollars a ticket for an audience to come see them.

In my case they did really cut down or obscure plays for some reason. One was a play that had the same scene occur three times due to muh pretentious time scale. (in a 2 hour play) Apparently the actors were really annoyed by it when they were queuing it. One of the plays I worked on was a version of Hamlet that was only an hour long, had only 5 characters (Hamlet, Claudius, Gertrude, The Ghost, and Ophelia), cut out the majority of the scenes and kept it to the bare minimum plot and removed a great deal of the literary themes.

I can't remember the play that my gf and I saw when she was a senior there, all I know is we went to support one of her friends who was in the cast. One of the ushers at the theater in the college basically told us right as we got there "Oh yeah, this play was on Broadway about 60 years ago, and this is only the second time a community theater or college/HS group has done this play." All I remember thinking was "Jeez, if you're only gonna do plays, at least do something Neil Simon, or hell, even Shakespeare...."

I've had This Jesus Must Die stuck in my head all day. "What, then, to do about Jesus of Nazareth, miracle wonder-man, hero of fools?" Bob Bingham also looks cool as fuck in this clip.

I'm more of a straight play guy, though. I'm auditioning for the Virginia Shakespeare Festival's 2015 season on Friday. Keep me in your thoughts and all that.

I've acted professionally in many stage productions over several years. And there's a rare personal life factoid from me.

Fingers crossed for you. I know the waiting for Shakespeare game! I spent my summer doing Shakespeare last year.

If any musical from the last few years gets a plug, it's Fun Home, based on Allison Bechdel's memoir.

We need some Jason Robert Brown triple-meter love duets.
