I’ve only ever seen the Internet Historian’s “reading” but it seemed like lots of fun.
Either way, I prefer Peter Chimaera's stuff more as far as possibly deliberately shitty fanfiction goes.
I hear stories that it was either made by a woman trying to find her brother, a trollfc for one friend to another, and that My Immortal was actually authored by the woman who wrote Mortal Instruments.
It's too on the nose early-2000-goth-teenage-cringe for it not to be a troll. However, it certainly has an interesting history. I'm not sure if the Farms could really add anything that hasn't already been said about it.
However, I did recently get recommended a video by someone who claimed to have received an email from My Immortals author. It's probably BS and the Youtuber is most-likely using it for views but I thought that was worth sharing.
EDIT: I actually sat down and watched the video and the guy that emailed her might be worthy of a thread. TLDR: He's been claiming authorship of My Immortal and rescinding it since 2009. He has over 20 alt accounts were he writes bible fanfiction and fights with himself for attention. Some of his account names overlap with his real name and another one is his stage name. He's a musician who lives in New Zealand and apparently isn't very good at covering up his tracks. [Video]

There was a thread here after some chick claimed to be Tara and wrote the story to "find her lost brother." Turns out a fellow farmer was her actual brother and she was a histrionic attention whore.

My Immortal came out around the time of harassment/troll fics reaching peak creation/consumption in all fandoms. It wasn't the one that started the fire, the trash was already burning, it was just a pop of accelerate/fuel that caught attention. My tin foil hate refuses it being less than a purposeful troll fic by an older fandom creator pissed off at the 'new kids' coming in. I'm likely wrong, but it's just something about the way it's 'sold' to the audience but also meta aware...
I'm super tired of 'content creators' revisiting it over and over. Internet Historian did a follow up to it with a sonic fanfic and season 8 adlib re-write of GoT, but there's so many other 'good' fictions out there to visit that never get touched on.

It's most likely a troll-fic, but I still hope it my heart it was made by some 12 year old cringelord with brain problems. I hate the fact almost all of the legendary badfics are SA faggots or whatever now dead pseudo-intellectual community they came from. I'm still mad that the worst straight-faced fanfiction is usually just Linkara and Dakari-Mykan esque trash.
If it were made a few years later, I'd be dead certain it was a troll. But given the era it came out in, I think there is a 50/50 shot of it being real. The early and mid-2000's were full of cringe-inducing fanfics written by 13-year old edgelords. It was part of that zeitgeist.
Of course, this was also around the time trollfics started catching on as well and the mid-late 2000's was also when you had guys like Peter Chimera and ShakespeareHemmingway becoming more common. The fact that My Immortal became such an infamous meme that everyone and their mother claims to have written it or know the person who really did means we'll probably never truly know if it was a really good troll or a genuine shitty fanfic writer.

Whether My Immortal is genuine or an elaborate ruse depends on how charitable I'm feeling about humanity on any given day.
