Did anyone ever watch the Mysterious Cities Of Gold back in the 80s? The sign of a great cartoon is when you watch it as an adult and enjoy it much as you did when you were young. It ran for 39 episodes and I missed the ending when it was originally broadcast but I managed to download it all and it really is fantastic. I love stuff about South American civilizations and I love how in the cartoon they came up with theories about how they died out. The story they came up with about how the Olmecs dies out was really interesting. The stuff about the war between Atlantis and Lemuria and how both continents were destroyed is really interesting too.

I've heard that when Lemuria died out the people ended up in South America and created places like Chichen Itza and the people of Atlantis made it to Africa and headed north to Egypt where they built the great pyramids.

I recently discovered a second series has been produced where they try to find 6 of the other 7 cities of gold and is now available for download. I just watched the first episode and it's great that they have brought back all the old characters. The new voices are a bit strange at first but the people who voiced the kids are all grown up now.

If you have any interest in ancient South American civilizations and cultures it is well worth seeing. If you don't treat it as just another kids cartoon you won't be disappointed.

Wow, that takes me back. That show really sparked my interest in mysterious lost cultures as a kid. I'm still into it now. Problem is I keep expecting Olmecs to look like aliens.

Yeah, the Olmecs were rather funny looking little people. I liked how they came up with a plausible story about how they died out. PM me if you'd like a link for downloading the second series. I can't believe they made a second series 30 years after the first.

I remember Brave Starr from when I was a kid. It was about a Sheriff on a planet in the future, but it was a western theme. Sheriff Brave Starr was part Native American and could call on the powers of totem animals like Speed of a Puma, Strength of a Bear, Eyes of a Hawk/Eagle. I'm not sure how it would hold up if I watched it today, and I don't want to ruin my childhood any more than it has been.

One cartoon that I still watch today that I love as much now, if not more, than when I was a child is the original Robotech/Macross. I have the whole first season of Robotech on DVD and plan on getting the English dub of Macross soon, though I have seen it.

Considering how many cartoons from the 80's have gotten remakes (He-Man, Thundercats, MLP) It'd be kind of neat to see a remake of Brave Starr.

A few years ago, a mate of mine got hold of a dvd with tons of single episodes of cartoons from the 80's and we all sat and watched it having a total nostalgia trip. The thing is, a some may hate me for this, is that they were pretty much universally shite, all the shows such as Transformers, Thundercats, He-Man etc, were badly animated and written, churned out, 25 minute toy commercials.
The one good thing on the disc was The Mysterious Cities Of Gold. Nicely animated with a compelling plot and characters, the only real problem with it was that the dialogue delivery was sometimes a bit off due to the English dub having to fit in with the mouth movements of it's original language (it was a French/Japanese collaboration)

The same partnership gave us the equally awesome Ulysses 31, a sci-fi version of the Odyssey, and well worth a watch along with Cities of Gold.

I'll give the Montreal staff credit for trying (where the English dub was handled at).

I first saw MCoG on Nickelodeon back in the mid 80's myself. Nick use to take a lot of chances with playing stuff like this. The Nick today is a shell of it's former self I feel. Where else could one watch such classics as these....

Before Full House...

This was my favorite show for all the bizarre clips they played....

The children of today miss out!

DiC use to be a great company before Andy Heyward bought out the French guys. The best America ever saw of U31 was through this...

Kids today are totally missing out. When we were kids there was Saturday morning cartoons, and after school cartoons, and that was it. Now there are several stations dedicated to 24/7 cartoons. Kids will never again know what it's like to rush home from school or getting up Saturday before Mom and Dad are awake to watch their favorite shows. It built character.

The patience and the reward are not there. While true we have more choices, the promotion once required to get the word out is gone, you have to be smart enough to know what you want to see anymore, and often word-of-mouth tends to be all people rely on.

Just one more thing, here's how the Japanese have first saw this program courtesy of their publicly-funded NHK network. This clip comprises the opening and closing of the very last episode including the documentary segment.
