NBA makes its stand: If you can’t handle player protest, then move on -

The blatant lack of parity and obvious narrative engineering are gonna kill this league before the BLM shit does. I haven't cared about the NBA in years after the saga with the Warriors and pretty much every still-fan I've talked to stopped watching the playoffs because they knew a Lakers victory was a foregone conclusion, just so the league could hype Lebron again. The constant political messaging is just the corn kernels atop the existing shit sundae.

To be fair (because I am a fair man), the NBA has never ever had parity.

There might be an occassional blip, but I think like 45 of the last 50 NBA Finals matchups have been the obvious suspects.

It's like a tree falling in the woods. Did it really happen if nobody watched it?

It's shocking how far the ratings have plummeted from just a few years ago, they were down 40+ percent even before coronavirus and the way over the top BLM garbage. It's even worse if you factor in the ratings being juiced because now Neilsen is counting bar watchers in its ratings totals. People were already heading for the exits and the NBA stepping on its own dick repeatedly in terms of politics has just hastened that trend.

The NBA is now a niche league like the MLB but the funny thing is it won't affect how much money networks will have to shell out to televise their games. The NBA has all the leverage because ESPN and TNT need content to get people to tune in. So the players will keep their huge salaries while ESPN tries to stem the financial bleeding that will eventually kill it off.

Disney is about to drop ESPN, according to reports, and TNT may need content but you cannot pay what you don't have. TV networks make money based on advertising dollars and advertising is based off of ratings. It is highly optimistic to think this ratings disaster isn't going to effect the players salaries.

Adam Silver has already alluded to the players having to take a pay cut next year. The players haven't realized how hard they've been screwed by LBJ yet. I'm looking forward to when they do.

I am going to summarize this thread.

Ahem.

Attention everyone. 'Clinks champagne glass'.

"Can I have your attention?"

Ahem.

THE AMERICAN PEOPLE DO NOT WANT TO BE LECTURED TOO BY A COMPANY THAT BENT THE KNEE TO A GOVERNMENT THROWING ETHNIC MINORITIES INTO CONCENTRATION CAMPS ABOUT WHAT IS MORAL. LEBRON JAMES CAN TAKE A FLYING LEAP OFF THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA AND IN BETWEEN SUCKING XI XINPINGS COCK EXPLAIN TO THE FREE PEOPLE OF AMERICA HOW THE ETHNIC CLEANSING OF XINJIANG AND THE REPRESSION OF HONG KONG IS ALL A MATTER OF PERSPECTIVE AND HOW ITS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT WORDS HAVE CONSEQUENCES."

Ahem.

And thank you. A toast if you will. I raise my glass to the free people of the world.

God save the President of the United States.
God save the Republic of the United States.
May god smite her enemies.

And may god smite the NBA.
God Save the American Empire. Long may she reign.

They won't, watch for labor stoppages if the word "pay cut" is mentioned again.... and cries of "slavery!" and "racism!" and 'TV RATINGS WEREN't DOWN, LIES LIES LIES!!!!!" and the last 2 anchors at ESPN simping for them the whole time.....

It's why they want China so bad, the league actually went woke years ago, you saw it in the late 90's and early 00's when players started refusing to stand for the anthem on principle alone, not poltics, rebelling against dress codes saying they couldn't wear 20 pounds of bling on the court, taking orders from (and occasionally choking) white coaches, having an issue with players running into the stands to beat up hecklers and bringing guns into locker rooms, all under the guise of "It's racism" and since then, the league has been trying HARD to grow it's global brand so they can tell the normal working and middle class US fanbase that doesn't like arrogant ingrates to fuck off, as they hold them responsible for every rule they don't like or even the mere suggestions that they can't do whatever they want....

They want the China market because it's as rich as the one they had in America when it comes to merch sales and TV rights, but, most importantly, it won't complain or criticize the player's behaviors.

TLDR - the players are prima donnas and want a fanbase that "knows it's place" and just lines up to cheer them on and give them money, and they see China as that market, ignorant or indifferent that the reason THAT fanbase doesn't complain is because in that country, complainers get the gulag.....

Since the thread got bumped, I'll post this article here:

It’a an ongoing debate in the sports media world this fall: Why are ratings down?

Viewership of the 2020 NBA Finals on ESPN was down 51% overall from last year; Game 3 was the lowest-rated NBA Finals Game 3 on record. The NHL Stanley Cup Finals on NBC were down 61% from last year. In baseball, the 2020 ALCS and NLCS were down 30% overall (least-watched ALCS on record), and the first two games of the 2020 World Series also hit record lows. The 2020 Kentucky Derby on NBC was down 49% from last year, and the U.S. Open tennis tournament (men’s and women’s) on ESPN was down 50% from last year. Even the reliable ratings juggernaut NFL was down 12% through the first five weeks of its season. (The 2020 WNBA season was an exception, up 15% from last year; NASCAR ratings are down just 1% from last year.)

Whatever the cause of the broad decline, if you ask former NFL player turned Fox Sports host Emmanuel Acho, it’s a good thing.

“There are bigger things going on than sports right now,” said Acho in an interview at Yahoo Finance’s (virtual) All Markets Summit on Monday. “I'm glad sports are down. And I'm a sports guy. You can cut this for my bosses, for the world to see. There's a presidential election going on. There's a pandemic going on. I would hope to God that a game—which all sports are, is a game—are less important than lives. So when people are like, ‘Oh, sports are down,’ I'm like, bravo. Because at least that shows me that we have our priorities right in this country. Sports will pick back up. They always do.”

Acho, who played college football at the University of Texas and three seasons in the NFL, left ESPN this year to join Fox Sports as cohost of the studio show “Speak For Yourself.” But he has arguably become more widely known, since June, for his web series “Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man.”

The series has racked up more than 70 million views, as Acho has scored sit-downs with high-profile guests like Matthew McConaughey and Chip and Joanna Gaines for candid conversations about race. His book, with the same title as the series, publishes on Nov. 10 under Oprah Winfrey’s imprint at Macmillan.

Most notably, Acho got NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to sit for a lengthy discussion on the player protests that Colin Kaepernick started, the NFL’s initial handling of the protests, and Goodell’s own views on players speaking out on social justice.

In Acho’s view, the NFL has more of a responsibility to spur social change in America than any of the other pro sports leagues. Why? “Because to whom much is given, much is required,” Acho told Yahoo Finance. “The NFL literally owns one day of the week... You have to do more. Intention without direction is worthless. The NFL has great intention. Now it needs to figure out what is its direction, right? I didn't love the intention of playing the Black national anthem. That's not going to do anything. Personally, as a Black man, in my opinion, it's not going to do anything. Sooner or later, we have to go from names on the back of helmets and names on the front of helmets of lost and murdered people, and people who have suffered from police brutality, to ensuring it doesn't happen again.”

TL;DR - A TV sports personality says he's glad TV ratings are down because Black Lives Matter.

Edit: I thought the thread got bumped but apparently I just got an alert. Meh, whatever it fits here.

I love how much fawning praise that the WNBA players are getting right now because their activism resulted in the Atlanta Dream owner losing her Senate election.

I also love how normal everyone thinks this is. These players literally openly rooted against their own ownership, and nobody thinks this is weird. In fact, everyone is praising them for their "bravery."

Brave words, for a dying sport. How about not involving politics and if you want your female NBA to grow. How about cutting the high maintenance tier players and bundling their games as warm ups for main games like the lakers or the magics? Adapt or become obsolete is the words most sports should learn and it's valid still

The wnba would be dead back in 2002 if the nba did not continue to throw money at them and include broadcasting WNBA games into networks nba broadcasting contracts.

See, I like that the WNBA exists. It gives young and teenage girls something to aspire to and look up to. The league existing is not the problem. It's the rampant entitlement of the players in a league that cannot even break even that's the problem. Then they pretend that the idea of the league making a profit is some right-wing ableist idea and not basic economics.

It will be both funny and sad once some trans person comes in and utterly dominates the league. I'm almost certain this will happen soon, maybe with D-Wade's kid.

Thanks NBA for pretending to care about black people. In actuality, the NBA could not give less of a shit about minorities. Say, it is kinda ironic how the NBA made players wear "I can't breathe" shirts when the company who makes them give the sweatshop workers $6 an HOUR. Isn't it funny how teenagers who work at McDonald's get paid more then the people who make clothing for the NBA? I'm sick of every company and thing pretending to care about issues the couldn't care less about to look progressive and woke for all the twitter and tumblr retards. The world would be a better place if Twitter and tumblr just didn't exist.

Every time I see some NBA footage all the players are black and the crowd is always white
Blacks would rather spend money on Air Jordans than tickets.
I get the NBA and NFL, but what did the MLB did?

I don't even like sports so it's mox nix to me.
This summer it was the usual virtue signalling for BLM and the mostly-closed stadiums had "Black Lives Matter" everywhere. My parents are huge baseball fans and didn't watch a single game. This is very unusual for them since the year we got the TV package 10-15 years ago they'd have their team's game on every single night they played. Everytime I saw them they were watching Fox News instead.

Granted, I heard the quality of play was pretty bad this year.

ESPN has to rely on Dodgeball to fill those time slots. I was going to say that ESPN should buy out Channel Ocho, but when I went to look it up, IRL ESPN actually does show Dodgeball. Just how fucked is that network?
