Basketball caught on super early in China, like in the early 1900's. It's been popular there for a really long time, and is the most played sport in the country; I think it's the only country besides the U.S. where basketball is more popular than soccer. Though the NBA didn't really get super huge in China until after Yao Ming entered the league.

To be honest sports are not the same with fans in the arenas. Regardless I'm not going to lose any sleep over their boycott. Cancel the games and I'll be happy without them.
