Nerd, Geek, or Dork? -

I've always been fond of this OkCupid test. I think it may be relevant here since we seem to be a big, happy family of nerd, geeks, and dorks in these forums. According to this test...

A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.
A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.
A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.

It's just that "dork" is usually used as an insult, from what I understand, while "nerd" and "geek" are often used by people to explain their interests.

I didn't know a "nerd" was interested in learning in general while a "geek" was interested in a particular topic. I agree that I'm more of a nerd than a geek, there are half a dozen to a dozen academic subjects that interest me.

The term "geek" came from a circus freak who bit the head off of living animals. I'm glad I'm not that

Meh, well back in my school days I suppose "nerd" was considered an insult as well, since some people used that term derogatorily toward me. But they are correct, since I am definitely a nerd. I'm interested in many things from foreign languages to the natural sciences, and someday I'd like to be a Renaissance woman. 8-)

It's not that you're a school junkie, like the nerd, and you don't really stand out in a crowd, like the dork, you just have some interests that aren't quite mainstream. People confuse you with a Nerd all of the time. You aren't some genius, like some people have said, and didn't/don't really like school all that much (and you especially hated some of the social aspects, like getting mocked). It's just that you have some passions and interests that you're extremely into/good at, and this has placed you in circles with other social outcasts, some of whom are exceptionally bright.

The awesome thing about being where you are is that you get to hang out with an elite group (though you'd probably rather be alone, or with only the closest friends and family) and you can make quite a good career for yourself in your particular specialties. Common to this group are people who are highly into electronics/computers as that is where the money lies, today.
