You know, if they wanted to shoe horn diversity into the show, they could have easily come up with a black witcher, or if they wanted to YAS KWEEN they could have, you know, had an original idea and created a female love interest for Geralt who is black. But no. Let's shoehorn in the diversity by black washing an iconic character who is explicitly written in the books as a northern Slavic beauty. That is sure to thrill the fans!

A recently surfaced casting ad has revealed that Netflix's adaptation of The Witcher game series is looking to make some major changes to, fan-favourite character, Ciri.

According to a newly released National Youth Theatre listing, the Netflix series is after a "16 or 15 year old BAME (black, Asian, minority ethnic) girl who can play down to 13/14."

In Andrzej Sapkowski's book series', of which the games are based on, as well as the games themselves, Ciri is depicted as white. And on top of that, at the time of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, her age is roughly 22.

As the listing continues is goes into more depth, defining the character as "resilient, relentless, brazen, and growing". Below you can see the full listing - which provides even more background information on the character:

Also the personality for her they are trying to write sounds like Tumblr girl. Stronk wamyn. Does not seem to fit the character at all. It is all so tiresome.

I blame Andrzej Sapowski for complaining about how the Witcher games adapted his universe. Clearly someone at netflix saw him say that and went "hold my beer". Also, the "what difference does it make what ethnicity she is?" doesn't work here because Ciri's resemblance to Geralt is a plot point that comes up multiple times.

Prediction: Cintra, Ciri's birthplace, is going to be this Netflix series' version of Wakanda and the Nilfgaard invaders are going to be evil wypipo, completely ruining the worldbuilding of the author. Nilfgaard are a bunch of evil fucks because they oppress and enslave everyone on an equal opportunity basis and use weaponized identity politics mixed with funding terrorist groups in the lands of their targets of conquest. Actually, the more I think about it, the more I realize why they chose to take an axe to setting. Nilfgaard is like the conjunction of the neoliberals and an absolute monarchy

It's a setting that's morally gray out the wazoo and that's part of what makes it unique. If they decide to bring modern idpol into this it will be unsalvageable

Good job sticking to the "All videogame movies suck" rule netflix.

Seriously though I want a MRI of the brain of whoever thought this was even a remotely good idea. I actually want to study the damage out of scientific curiosity.

My bet? Some idiot hack writer who has gotten the "job of a lifetime". Said person has not read the books, and has not played the games. But Xe has read the Wikipedia synopsis for the universe and has maybe gotten a quick rundown courtesy of those dedicated gamers at Resetera.

They did something similar to L in their Death Note adaption. Turned him from a pasty white guy into a stereotypical hoodie wearing black guy. But you know what? The guy playing him actually pulled it off and did a pretty good job.

Now it's still unclear if he was cast specifically because he was black or if he actually the best actor who auditioned. If it was the latter then that's fine IMO. Now, if it was just because he was black and the producers had the same mindset as what's going on with this movie then that's a huge ass problem and they're lucky af that the guy gave that good of a performance.

Personally, I think that an actor should look at least something like the character their portraying, but if they don't and they still manage to give a good performance, I'm not bothered that much. If they don't look the part and also suck at being the character, it makes it even more obvious as to what they were doing.

Basically what I'm saying is that if they cast a person that does a good job, then that's great. But since they're going in with such a shitty mindset to begin with and the writing as of now looks terrible, it unfortunately looks like this is going to be a complete shitshow.

Are they just throwing the Medieval Slavic influenced setting out the window? Is it now just gonna be a trendy Sci Fi Channel urban fantasy where he's now Gerald of Riverside with two guns instead of swords?

It's like, why bother with paying for licensing if you're just going to do your own thing anyway?

Where's my Baldur's Gate series with Minsc as an autistic supergenius and Drow culture being portrayed as a Matriarchal paradise?

I don't think this getting a netflix adaptation because of the popularity of the video game. I think the popularity of the GoT adaption on HBO, put a fantasy epic on netflix's radar, and the witcher game's source material is from a series of novels that were very popular in Poland. So I would imagine this series would closer resemble the plotlines and elements of the books than the video games.

An importnat thing to contrast here is that in the GoT adaptation, Danaerys was cast to look like she did from the books, because it is relevant to the plot and worldbuilding. Ciri is in a similar position in the story, and her appearance is also of significance to the plot and worldbuilding. In this instance they decided to get woke instead

Are Nilfgaard really that evil? They're mostly derived from the Hapsburg Austrian Empire with a blend of the Holy Roman one mixed in. They're far more morally gray because while they keep other ethnicities and sorceresses on short leashes they actually keep them alive and protected under the law. The Northern Kingdoms by comparison are all made of bastards to a various degree and stripe and moreso under complete dicks like Radovid and Djikstra.

So Geralt is going to be even bigger cuck that he was in the books and mutation is going to be made through injection of great amounts of soy?

GoT also had George RR Martin watching the two producers/writers of the show like fucking hawks until Season 5. The only changes that were made were ones Martin wanted to make himself, doubly so in the casting of Danaerys as Martin had admitted publicly he regrets her being as young as she is in the books (She's a rather historically accurate 13 at the start when first nailed by Drogo). He became satisfied with what they did with the minor changes they made and let them see both the then current draft of Winds of Winter and his cliff notes on Dreams of Spring.

The writer for The Witcher by comparison is a bit of a moron, he let CDPR fuck with his "vision" with the games and complains a lot about them, mostly because he sold the rights cheap and had no creative control over it. Same seems to have happened again with the Netflix adaptation and its soy-happy writing room.
