Anyone else here excited for The Crown season 3? (I know, fat chance around here).

In case anyone is, I am going to be pretty excited to see them get into Charles coming of age and Margaret's marriage troubles. And apparently they're going for the Silver Jubilee, which, if you know anything about what happened in the Thames in 1977, you'll know why it's basically trolling legend.

Is this reference to the Sex Pistols boat shenanigans?

How much do you know about Dickie Mountbatten, the character he is playing in the Crown. Because that guy practically shaped the modern royal family.

Well I don't know everything. The TLDR would be that he loved a Romanov, he was in WWII and some people say he wasn't very good at it. He and his wife didn't care for each other and dated other people. He kind of rasied Phillip and arranged for him to be around Elizabeth. All that stuff about him trying to get the Mountbatten name on the house of Windsor really happened. He was the last viceroy of India. He had two daughters and no sons, and I think Elizabeth issued letters patent allowing his titles to pass to them or to their sons-- I never understood exactly how that worked. Charles was very fond of him as a grandfather figure. He tried to match Charles up with Amanda Knatchbull but it didn't take. He was killed in an IRA bombing in 1979 on his boat and it took his grandson with him. Charles was devastated.

Yup, that would be Grand Duchess Maria Romanova (Nicholas II's third daughter) and he apparently kept a picture of her near his bedside for his entire life (unsurprising because Maria was definitely the prettier sister imo). The guy had *quite* the party life (I'll spare you the details about the orgies), and that's one of the reasons why he didn't do as well as was expected of him in World War II. Consider how stuffy and conservative the Queen is, I'm honestly kind of surprised she let him around Charles - although that might be definitely more Philip's doing.

Anyway, I can't wait to sperg and nitpick the new season to pick up what's historically accurate and what was invented for the show.

SAME HERE!!!! Have you read Daughter of Empire? His wife once left their daughters in a Swiss hotel and forgot which one, leaving them there for months!

I can't wait to see how they handle Charles in the pre-Diana years. Everyone is eagerly awaiting Diana, but I am just as interested in the young years when Dickie was trying to get Charles to marry his daughter, and all the stuff with the Nixons! And Anne's kidnapping attempt!

I hope the show is able to climb ahead in the popularity race. Game of Thrones always stole a lot of its thunder.
Which is especially sucky since Game of Thrones started sucking in season four (even though everyone likes to pretend it only started sucking in season 7/8 ) It also stole The Borgia's thunder.

I didn't read the book, but now I'm putting on my list for the potential trainwreck material. I'll have to admit, though, I'm excited but also kind of dreading Diana showing up in the series. The series is pretty good at presenting flawed characters, and I hope they do the same with Diana and don't go for the good ol' "Uwu Diana's a sweet lil' angel who dinndoo nuffin wrong".

This said, Emma Corrin for the role is spot on, just appearance-wise:

Fuck, I hope so too. At this point, it clearly has the better writing, better acting and better overall production values, and it's basically Peter Morgan's passion project for years. I hope they dominate the Emmys, especially with the cast they have, and they're probably praising the heavens they got Olivia Colman pre-Oscar win and while her net worth wasn't too high.

I will also add that John Lithgow as Winston Churchill put Gary Oldman's Oscar-winning performance to shame - and I'm even kind of disappointed the episode about his portrait wasn't a standalone film, because it was incredible.

I hate the "Saint Diana" narrative too and am very optimistic. Two clues that they're doing this right: 1) So far things seem very sympathetic to Charles (I just wanted to wrap him up in a blanket, hug him to bits, and give him cocoa after the Gordonstern episode and 2) The casting for Camilla. They didn't ugly her up.

Granted Camilla was never gorgeous (she's actually one of those people who look better when they've aged) but people make it out like she was Lily McMenamy ugly.

I really enjoyed Sally Bedell Smith's biography of Charles, even if it was kind of a puff piece.

So... positives first:

Acting and Production value is amazing as always. I loved the characterization of Princess Anne and Margaret. I liked most of the Charles stuff. The episodes on Aberfan and Wales are especially spectacular.

Negatives: The characterizations of Wilson and Prince Phillip were inconsistent. I think they are waaaaaay too nice to Lord Snowdon, who was an abusive prick who married Margaret for social status. Like, he was just as much of a mess as Margaret. Then they make a whole episode about Princess Alice's death and then have her die offscreen? WTF? Also: No Anne kidnapping attempt or Sex Pistols.
