Hal (Timothée Chalamet), wayward prince and reluctant heir to the English throne, has turned his back on royal life and is living among the people. But when his tyrannical father dies, Hal is crowned King Henry V and is forced to embrace the life he had previously tried to escape. Now the young king must navigate the palace politics, chaos and war his father left behind, and the emotional strings of his past life — including his relationship with his closest friend and mentor, the aging alcoholic knight, John Falstaff (Joel Edgerton). Directed by David Michôd and co-written by Michôd and Edgerton, THE KING co-stars Sean Harris, Ben Mendelsohn, Robert Pattinson, and Lily-Rose Depp.

So... this looks surprisingly interesting for a N*tflix movie. Anyone watched it yet, what's the verdict?

Doesn't look too bad. And it looks like Fastolf is going to be much more that the comic relief he usually is.

Also Robert Pattison has a very silly french accent.

I'm going to watch it tonight, so I'll give my verdict on it then, but it does look good. The only complaint I've had about it is the costume department had no idea what they were doing. Maybe the Netflix people had to be put in charge of something so they gave them that?

So it's an interesting movie because David Michôd is the writer

Haven't watched "Animal Kingdom" and "War Machine" yet but I did watch "The Rover" and it was pretty good.

Also, Adam Arkapaw is the cinematographer

Haven't bothered watching True Detective's season 2, but S01 was fucking great. And Macbeth is another stunning-looking movie, you could pause the movie at any point and take a screenshot of it, fantastic work.

There seems to be great people behind it so it definitely picked my interest.

Love how all these hack film makers make medieval times disgustingly grey in every movie. You think the battlefield would be littered with colorful banners.

I blame "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" for this. Before this, movies set in medieval times were extremely colorful and clean looking. "Monty Python" was seen as an attempt to make things more gritty and realistic, since Graham Chapman was a stickler for historical accuracy. (Honestly, the film looked gritty and the castles all looked like ruins because MP and the Holy Grail was a very low budget production that used period castle ruins for its settings. ) Since MPatHG was made around the 1970's (a time of cynicism and deconstruction,) a lot of filmmakers hopped on the "make the medieval times look gritty" bandwagon. Only fantasy movies (which came into vogue around the 1980s) could get away with shiny gleaming castles and bright colors.

There's also the fact that shiny bright colors are expensive. It's easier to dump a cast into dull, dirty clothing and have them muck about in the muddy backlot of a studio or in a muddy field somewhere than sew, clean, and maintain an entire cast's worth of bright period-accurate clothing (and have colorful, clean sets.)

Also, in this day and age: bright colors = fantasy/cartoony. Drab colors = serious/historical/Oscar-worthy.

Edit: Here's an example of Henry V: Pre-Drab Hollywood edition...

Techicolor was new, and movie studios were trying to show it off around that time, but still, I'm inclined to favor that as a truer representation of what people looked like (costume anachronisms aside,) over the modern, "He must be a King, he doesn't have shit all over him," muddy interpretation of medieval stories...

If you have limited time, just watch season three. It's very close to as good as season one. (And watch two if you're bored... it's not even close to all bad.)

Watched it and best part about it is
Edward Cullen asking Timmy Chalamet about his balls

On a more serious note, it's actually pretty decent, especially considering it's a Netflix original.
