Port. All the focus was on the Splatoon characters instead of a wide spread of characters, like most Smash ones.
Wii U is a sunk ship, and right now Nintendo is trying to salvage the scraps. It's most likely an enhanced port they'll continue to update.

nintendo's hyping this up like it's a new game but it's probably going to be a port
New game with ported characters and stages from the previous titles.
It looks like Nintendo is pissed with those roster choices, so they decided to take a more passive-aggressive tone on the trailer (to me though).
Port with updated stuff (BotW Link, Odyssey Mario) & probably new characters and stages.
I'm leaning more toward the side of a new game but with the same engine and "balanced" speed as Smash 4 and at least most of the characters from that game. With Sakurai still behind the wheel I don't think a whole lot is going to change between installments. This one has probably been pretty easy for them to make, comparatively speaking.

I never played the Wii U because I don’t hate myself so this is a new Smash to me no matter what it is.

Aren't most smash games a port tho? With major difference being the new characters and interface.
All video games are ports of Spacewar.
