I'm getting ready to run a game of Hunter: The Vigil soon with my gaming group. I'm reading through the NWoD corebook and I'll be going through Hunter after I finish the corebook. Is there anything I should know that would make everything easier or would be helpful for me to know?

Not a big fan of NWoD myself. Good luck to you GMing the game though.

There's no nuance in the combat, so doing lots of damage makes an attack automatically more accurate. If you want combat to tell a story you have to bring the whole narrative with you. The system isn't going to meet you half way like most games. oWoD had disdain for combat, nWoD has a full on ancestral fucking grudge.

Not familiar with hunter, but with most of the other nWoD you have to bring a lot of the setting mythology with you. nWoD is less of a setting and more of a setting building toolkit. It works best if you e,brace the world building rather than fighting against it.

Fuck touchscreen keyboards.

So just base the entire setting on what the book recommends?

There's some things I really like and I hate from NWoD.

Vampire The Requiem: Take out all the unique clans (Tzmisce, Tremere, Followers of Set, Malkavians (yes, I know they're now a bloodline)), take the basic ones and water them down, make it about deep-down missing your humanity (requiem) and you got a chunk of VtR. I like how in Vampire the Masquerade there where there were Vampires who reveled in their inhumanity and don't give a damn.

Werewolf The Forsaken: No metis or lupus. The multiple paths of spirituality and deep, cultural roots are gone (from cyberpunk to Viking rune magic).

Mage the Chosen: Haven't read as much, but I miss the multiple world views on magic (there's just Atlantis now) and where it came from. The kitchen sink approach in Mage the Ascension was more interesting.

Changeling the Lost: Massive improvement over Changeling the Dreaming. It's my favorite of the NWoD splats.

Gheist the Sin Eaters: Neutral on it. It's hard to top Wraith the Oblivion.

Promethean The Created: Depressing, but a very interesting setting.

Slashers: Awesome. I want it to get a conversion to oWoD.

Hunter the Vigil: I like it. It's much more down-to-earth than Hunter the Reckoning.

Mummy the Curse and Demon: Don't know enough for an opinion.

Beast the Primordial: From what I've seen, I kind of agree with this one person on the forums (forgot who) that says it's like otherkin the game.

Deviant the ?: It's the new one that's coming up. This is the explanation for it: "You woke up…different. Someone changed you; on a slab, an operating table, an altar. By luck or by fate, you escaped. Hunted by the ones who made you, they hold all the cards. Except one thing, what they don’t know is that a fire burns within you because what they did wasn’t right. What they don’t know is that YOU’RE hunting THEM. Deviant: The ??? presents a game where the victims of experiments band together to bring down the monolithic organizations that twisted and warped them. 320 pages."

It feels what it could do, Changeling could do in certain aspects. That game is also about being changed and twisted into something else by outside forces and some groups want to destroy their oppressors.
