What are some superstitions you've heard of or do on New Year's Day?

I have a superstition I actually adhere to... that being eating Black Eyed Peas on New Years Day. Dunno why, probably something my ancestors picked up when they lived in Nawlins, but it's supposed to bring good luck for the next year.

I've heard of that! When I worked at Cracker Barrel, they'd serve Hoppin' John free with all of the meals on New Year's Day. I had the cooks save me some plain black eyed peas that weren't cooked with the meat stuff (vegetarian). I'm not sure it helped with my luck, but it was pretty nommy.

Yeah, my mom does the Black Eyed Peas thing. As far as I've heard it's mostly a southern thing.

I always make me and my Dad the Breckfast of Champions.

Sausages, Two Hash browns, Black Pudding, Fried Egg, and this Cheese an Tomato sauce on a white barm.

After that we go fishing on the Mersey 1 O'clock gun mark, other than one year my Dad was in hospital we haven't missed a New Years day fishing session in nearly 20 years, then well a Few drinks followed by a crap tastic film. It's the one day of the year me an my Dad have always spent together, when I was a kid it was normally the last day before he was back to travelling for work now it's just a nice day for me an my dad to spend together.

My mother says eating lentils on New Years day brings money into your life, literally some kind of lentil-to-dollar ratio. It was never explained exactly how that worked though.....

I'm doing that this year. Bonus points if you put coins in the pot and your bowl.

In my neck of the words we have the New Year's Day Levee, which is when everyone hauls their hungover ass to a Legion and keeps drinking. Our town used to have a forty-eight hour one but it was shut down in my parents' day for obvious reasons. We eat fish pie on NY Day, but then we eat fish pie for most major occasions.

And of course, we have a shit ton of fireworks. We have extra this year because it rains here on Christmas Eve. We live across a field from a corner store owner, so he always lights off all the expiring stuff in his store and fires the whole town up.

This is what my family did as well growing up and I still do it just for old times sake.

So does mine. But my vegetarian ass has to find luck in the lentil soup.

We also banged pots and pans when I was a kid. My cousins and I used to think we were the only ones who did that, but an AOL chat room when I was 16 proved otherwise--half of the room was going to do that as well.

Everyone in my family eats black-eyed peas and something green (usually cabbage or lima beans) on New Year's Day.

My family has a couple of traditions. I grew up with the black-eyed peas tradition. I forgot my black-eyed peas one year when I was living in Louisiana and made a last-minute run to the store, and managed to pick up their last can. It seems to mostly be a Southern thing.

My wife introduced me to some of her traditions. She wants to have a bowl full of fruit and round chocolates on New Year's (she explained that they bring good fortune all year 'round.') Then she leaves dollar bills on the tops of the furniture and spreads coins in the corners to encourage good fortune for the next year.

I've heard it was because they're round like coins.

Unfortunately I didn't have my pork and sauerkraut (happy Pennsylvania Dutch here) but I did make some pork chops in a white wine/dijon gravy for me and Mr. Multiples. The old saying is "the chicken scratches backwards, the cow stands still, but the hog roots forward."

Now if we get into Chinese New Year, those are some hefty superstitions. My maternal grandmother was the first generation born in America and grew up with her mother and father's superstitions just like any other little girl would in the early 30s. We are not an overly superstitious family but we always catch ourselves following through those superstitions juuust in case.

What are some of the Chinese New Year superstitions you follow? The big ones I remember are cleaning the house thoroughly and wearing red. My Chinese friends also got envelopes of money from their relatives--one set of parents was even nice enough to make a little one for me too. :P

Giving the house a good cleaning before (never after because you'll wash the good luck away!) is always a pretty easy one. Always a good excuse to buy some new item of red clothing. And of course the highly illegal yet extremely fun firecrackers to scare the bad spirits and demons away. Stores sell those infernal popper things now and god help you if someone tosses a pack under the wheel of a car because you'll think the Triads are coming after you.

The Chinese side of my family used to do the big get-togethers with all of the family at a restaurant and have all the lucky dishes. Things like the fish complete with eating it in the proper order (make sure you don't take a bite before the person who has the head facing them does!) My family would do that delicious steamed crab, walnut prawns, and a lot of other Chinese dishes like jellyfish (chewy tasty strips... it grew on me) and squab. I have no clue what the squab was called but they would serve a head of lettuce cut in half and this ground squab mixture with spices and diced veggies. You'd peel a leaf, add your plum sauce, and scoop the squab in like it's a pigeon-lettuce taco.

Unfortunately I developed a deadly allergy to shellfish/mollusks when I was 16 so I usually avoid Chinese food now because fish/sea critters are often not considered meat and due to my people's propensity to putting shrimp powder on fucking everything. Shrimp powder in pork buns has been my undoing and I can't eat anything that has been fried in the same oil. I would do terrible things to be able to eat shellfish again.

I tried to pay all my debts before the new year but I'm still working on the new car :tugboat:. The wisdom is that if you end the year in debt you begin the year in debt and keep the trend going. Seems logical I suppose. The Hong Bao/Lai See (red envelopes) are the best part because I'm still a greedy unmarried shit deep down.

A lot of the food superstitions have to do with how close the tones are. This is why you see tangerines and oranges everywhere, especially around Chinese New Year because they sound like luck and success. They are round and golden, meaning they're full of wealth. Pomelos too though they can be a fight to peel. One of my aunts used to pay me to peel them for her. Careful you don't get a sour stomach from all the citrus!
