Newspaper comics thread?

My favorite would be FoxTrot by Bill Amend. The author is well versed in science, technology, the internet, and "nerd culture", and he incorporates them into the comics quite a bit without going too overboard.

I also like Calvin & Hobbes by Bill Watterson, "The Far Side" by Gary Larson (only there can you see sentient amoeba watching a porno flick consisting of mitosis in action), and sometimes Garfield (Jim Davis). The whole thing about Jon getting together with Liz was news to me. And of course, Dilbert by Scott Adams.

http://www.gocomics.com has a large collection from many different artists, and a lot of artists have their work on their own official sites.

It's also best to post links to comics there, instead of posting comics here, to avoid potential copyright issues.

I loved Foxtrot, but I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite. Zits is a really good one, but I also liked Rose is Rose.

What's a newspaper?

Okay, okay, seriously though- I guess unfortunately the ones I like are from artists that aren't making comics anymore like Calvin & Hobbes, Peanuts, The Far Side, and Boondocks. Otherwise, I just haven't gotten into the funny pages like I used to.

Oh, except Family Circus. Oh ho ho, Dolly, you miserable sack of shit...

I'm not a die-hard comic book ready so call me a casual, I mostly just read what in the Sunday newspaper with my family whenever we're together. My whole family always likes reading Family Circus, Pickles, and Close to Home and anything else we found amusing together every Sunday morning as a tradition... I also like Foxtrot, but I was kinda sad to see it not in the paper we got anymore, but hey, that's the beauty of online!

I guess I should also mention I have this one book I once really liked about the wold history of comic books/strips I found at a flea market when I was about twelveish or so. It's kind of outdated by today's standards and you can probably find better history books about the stuff, but I did find it fascinating as a kid since it talked about pretty much every region in the world and how the medium evolved there, but yeah, you can finally find better books and ebooks and scholarly stuff online.

I haven't read newspaper comics in forever. They got rid of some of my favorites and never seemed to consider getting rid of the lowest ranked comics instead. I have, and always will, hate Family Circus however.

I Calvin and Hobbes.

Although I do find it perplexing how a six year old boy who can't do basic addition and subtraction problems is able to calculate how many bugs he needs to catch per minute to get all the bugs he needs for his project in ten minutes.

Course, this is Calvin we're talking about here.

April was the worst when she was a little kid. Each strip would end with her mouth side open. Then as she got old, the wide jawed last panel belonged to michaels son.

Lio, Pearls, and Zits are great. Calvin and Hobbes goes without saying. There's a couple of newspapers comics I hate-read, Luann being chief among them. But nothing will beat the day Family Circus made a Warhammer 40k reference, an accurate one.

I like Dilbert, Foxtrot and Pearls Before Swine. Herb and Jamaal can make me chuckle. Calvin and Hobbes is an all-time classic. I used to enjoy Garfield, back before it became strictly by-the-numbers.

An oldie that I really enjoy is Krazy Kat. There's just something about the use of language, and the art is gorgeous.

To be honest, though, I find most newspaper strips formulaic. Most of the ones that were legitimately edgy and funny have either ended or the need to appease the advertisers has resulted in their becoming so bland, inoffensive and irrelevant as to be entirely pointless as a form of entertainment. I prefer reading them on The Comics Curmudgeon with the snarky commentary.
