Pretty sure YouTube's going to get tired of Plagued Moth's shit soon. His two most recent videos about the TikTok beheading clip have both been age restricted and the same can be said for a few of his other vids. I know he wants to promote his content as "ThE moSt ConTROveRSiaL ComMenTAry oN YoUTUbE" but he's basically painting a target on his back.

It's a real dilemma for him. I only discovered him relatively recently so am still catching up on his older vids - I've been enjoying how he covers some juicier topics, but I'm also fucked if I'm giving YouTube my card/passport details to prove that I'm a grown-up. Weirdly, I was able to see one of the TikTok Beheading clips a few days ago but now that's restricted too. It must be hard to find that balance between making interesting horror(ish) content and not being restricted to fuck, but that's gonna alienate an awful lot of viewers.

Tonight I caught up with his video on the Morocco Hiker Beheadings and it was dull as hell - a lengthy intro about his follower count and how he hopes to move to Colorado on his Patreon/YT money, 8 minutes of the actual story read in a spoopy deep voice, some shit that I honestly zoned out of, a joke about how he needs a machete that sharp, and then I switched off because I was bored. Possibly some sort of virtue-signal dig at the people who one-up each other on the most horrific videos they've ever seen, but I honestly can't remember

Honestly I'm not surprised this failed since The Sun Vanished became really bad when the creator's ego was too bloated like when he used the twitter page to break immersion to talk about Black Lives Matter and insult people who complained about the immersion breaking.

I saw a few people mention MrBallen a few pages back: I watched a few of his videos recently, so now my entire recommended feed is this guy's stuff. He's decent -- nothing too special, and as others have pointed out, his delivery/style is great, but he does the algorithm clickbait game too hard. Hell, he even makes the soy face in some of his thumbnails, despite being this tough military dudebro character.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to trash the guy. Like, whatever he's trying to do, it's clearly working because these videos get millions of views, and he just kind of appeared out of nowhere, so obviously he knows how to play the coveted algorithm game. More power to him, I guess. However, he still covers the same true crime topics that we've already heard about a million times already like Dyatlov Pass, Elisa Lam, Nutty Putty Cave, etc. etc.

It's like if Chills put his face on his thumbnails.

In the whole vein of how morally right it is to cover true crime for personal gain, using clickbait as bad as this is an absolute great fucking example of disrespect. ETA if I was murdered and turned into a popular cold case I'd much rather have my story covered by some guy in his basement talking into a mic over static images rather than have it turned into another red arrow and circle, mouth open and ready for cock clickbait thumbnail

Imagine being the victim of some heinous crime only to be turned into a monetized true crime video by some youtuber making the cuck face in the thumbnail (and the comments are more likely than not full of teenagers using stan language to compliment the youtuber). I'm surprised families of victims aren't trying to get exploitative videos taken down.

I feel so late to this thread and I'll take my late ratings or whatever, but if I may...

Local58 is just Kris Straub, author of the webcomics Starslip Crisis, Broodhollow, F-Chords and a few others plus some collabs with the hamplanet Scott Kurtz, stretching out his multimedia horror muse. There's no "there" there. It's a bunch of horror shorts, that's all. Yes, there's the binding agent of all being stuff broadcast on Local58, but people trying to find deep secrets that link "You Are On The Shortest Possible Route" and "Emergency Broadcast" are really digging too deep.

It's like insisting that Gibson's "Gernsback Continuum" is tied to Idoru (it ain't).

Someone way early on mentioned the "Dark" channels (Dark Skies, Dark Space, Dark 5, etc. etc.) and that young man has gone full history-bites, and I rather like it. Yes there's some mysterious stuff mentioned but he's focused now on more concrete things and honestly, hearing about the USMC's heroism at Bellau Wood, or how Combat Compass fucked the Vietnamese People's Air Force up royally, or all the times the Soviets tried to land a robot on the Lunar surface but only succeeded a couple of days before Apollo 11 touched down on it, that's way more interesting than a bunch of the so-called mysteries.

Because I watch his stuff, of course, the YT Algorithm suggested some other "creepy listicle" channel and I watched a few that were so hilariously bad. Bad, because one, the data the kid was spooling off was so out of date it barely merited a raised eyebrow and two, he can't pronounce half the things he says. He was talking about some abandoned ship (I think it was the Mary Celeste, as if that old chestnut hasn't been worn silky smooth), and kept saying "Azores" (which is pronounced "ay-zores" with "zores" rhyming with "sores") as "Ah-zor-ees". God, it was like fingernails on a chalkboard.

Now, y'all wanna see the original "spooky mystery" (but that you actually know is a bunch of bullshit, but has some interesting science facts sprinkled in), most of the Leonard Nimoy narrated In Search Of... episodes are available on Youtube. Better voice, but brace yourself for 144p as most of them (well...no, all of them) are coming off of videotapes from the 80s and possibly even the late 70s.

Here's a whole playlist, 200 episodes. No drama, no crying, no "s p ooooo k y n arrrrr ator voooooice" trying to sound like...I dunno, a horror movie or some shit. Mr. Spock, holding court on some interesting stuff. A bunch of it is just downright fascinating, and has nothing to do with creepy subjects, like...Tornado Chasing - but in the 1970s when tech was way less advanced than now. The storm chasing one has a team at Kansas State getting permission to "borrow" an F4 Phantom and use its combat radar data and other sensor information in analyzing storm fronts. It's pretty fuckin' cool!

Sadly I don't think the vast majority of them have enough time and money to even bother with it, and I'm not a DMCA expert by any means but I can't think of a single law you could pin on these videos, it's freedom of speech and maybe by some extent freedom of the press. Some of them have spoken out and asked people to stop using the crimes for personal gain (correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure Elisa Lam's family stated they want people to stop making videos on her and they got pretty mad when Netflix made an episode on the case or whatever) nothing else they can do in that position, really.

I recently binged a lot of Plagued Moth’s content, and I wanted to like him...but just can’t. I don’t know if it’s the smart ass smugness, terrible humor, telling us how bad something is rather than just describing the content, or the faggotry. I get fedora sex pest vibes. Takes me back to the days of Takedownman in a way, what with the coverage of creepypasta as if it’s legit deep web spoopy stuff.

...apparently ScareTheater stopped making his videos on his channel. Maybe that All Things Lost guy is actually him, and he's trying to rebrand himself under a new persona? It wouldn't be the 1st time this sorta thing happened. Like, there's that Punished Creepswork/Ten Bond guy who did something similar where he gave up with his main channel and did something like his old channel, but rebranded his persona.

This is something that I think That Chapter does really well. He's never in the thumbnails making faces and uses pictures of the people involved in the case with the victim/murders name on the top left corner and his logo in the bottom left. They catch my eye a lot more since I see more about what the video is gonna be rather than just him, and just feels less... intrusive overall.

I often end up watching That Chapter as background noise, and while I have an undying brotherly love for the Irish...my man has no business smugly mocking the Southern American accents when he pronounces 33rd as ‘turdy turd’.

I like when he absolutely butchers the native names some places in the midwest have, but most people in the US do that.

I am not one to get on a moral highground, but how can someone laugh and make jokes about gore and be an edgy paganist wannabe, but in the same breath say things like "don't be homophobic guys!!!!" and expect to be taken seriously? It's just annoying, so I usually just watch where he does the actual reading without interjecting his views or beliefs, and click off the video when the narration begins.

I like Disturban. I don't know if he's acting or that's his normal manner of reading, but he always sounds so grim. Kinda reminds me of a jaded old detective facing yet another horrific crime!
