SpectreVision, the boutique genre division of Company X, and ACE Pictures announced today that principal photography will begin next month on COLOR OUT OF SPACE. Starring Nicolas Cage, the film will be directed by Richard Stanley – his first feature in over twenty years. Based on the novella by H.P. Lovecraft, COLOR OUT OF SPACE will reunite Cage with SpectreVision, the company behind the critically acclaimed and commercially successful 2018 film MANDY. The film will also star Joely Richardson (Nip/Tuck, RED SPARROW), Tommy Chong (UP IN SMOKE), Elliot Knight (DC’s Titans), Julian Hilliard (The Haunting of Hill House) and Q’Orianka Kilcher (The Alienist, DORA THE EXPLORER).

COLOR OUT OF SPACE is a story of cosmic terror about The Gardners, a family who moves to a remote farmstead in rural New England to escape the hustle of the 21st century. They are busy adapting to their new life when a meteorite crashes into their front yard. The mysterious aerolite seems to melt into the earth, infecting both the land and the properties of space-time with a strange, otherworldly color. To their horror, the Gardner family discover that this alien force is gradually mutating every life form that it touches…including them.

COLOR OUT OF SPACE will be produced by SpectreVision’s Daniel Noah, Josh C. Waller, Lisa Whalen and Elijah Wood. Timur Bekbosunov, Johnny Chang, Emma Lee and Peter Wong will executive produce for ACE Pictures. Stacy Jorgensen will executive produce for SpectreVision.

South African filmmaker Richard Stanley started career with back-to-back cult classics, HARDWARE and DUST DEVIL, before being released from the notoriously controversial 1996 production of THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU with Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer, an event chronicled in the 2014 documentary LOST SOUL: THE DOOMED JOURNEY OF RICHARD STANLEY’S ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU.

In the 60 years since his passing, H.P. Lovecraft has come to be widely acknowledged as one of the most influential voices in American literature, and his work has spawned a multi-million-dollar industry with a truly global fan base. His influence and cult standing have inspired ranks in the horror echelon from Stephen King, Guillermo Del Toro, John Carpenter, Ridley Scott, J.J. Abrams, Sam Raimi, Stuart Gordon and many others.

SpectreVision partner Daniel Noah commented “Lovecraft is the dark father of modern horror, and we have been searching for an adaptation that captures the true scope of his cosmic dread for years. Richard Stanley – a wizard in his own right – will at long last bring Lovecraft’s humbling power to the screen unfiltered.”

Johnny Chang, CEO of Ace Pictures Entertainment, added “ACE Pictures Entertainment is thrilled to finance and co-produce COLOR OUT OF SPACE, our second collaboration with SpectreVision. The adaptation by Richard Stanley is outstanding and unique, a perfect canvas for Nicolas Cage’s inimitable acting style. We are tremendously excited to continue our partnership with SpectreVision and their signature style of genre.”

Nicolas Cage is repped by Mike Nilon of STRIDE Management. Joely Richardson is repped by Gersh and ARG. Elliot Knight is repped by ICM and Affirmative Entertainment. Julian Hilliard is repped by Paradigm and The Green Room. Q’orianka Kilcher is repped by APA and Anonymous.

Not among my favorite Lovecraft stories, someone is going to have to work extra hard to get the eventual trailer to sell me on this one.

This is going to be a movie no matter what my dumb ass sees in theaters just because its gonna be so grand and first true lovecraft (vs themed) film. Or its gonna be such a garbage fire a kin to a 2 hour loop of nick screaming THE BEES.

Either way I'm happy parting with 12 bucks (and cost of booze I smuggle in)

Ah wonderful, another one for the "just imagine telling people back ten years ago that this shit is happening" bucket.

To be honest Im actually pretty enthused. Mandy was surprisingly good, and if Nick Cage brings his A-game he could be a really good Pierce.

I think people underestimate Nick Cage as a character actor. It's worth remembering that crazy and otherwise dysfunctional characters are something Nick Cage is good at playing, he won an Oscar for Leaving Las Vegas after all. He can act when he's not in 'I'm just here for the because I need the money to pay off my unpaid taxes' mode. He seems like a smart casting choice to me.

This is a win-win scenario. If he takes the role seriously, it'll be compelling acting.

If he doesn't take this role seriously, it'll be hilarious.

I love the story, but it isn't something I'd call filmable. The entire story centers around a meteorite that glows a color that is literally unimaginable to the human mind. Not really something you can easily adapt to a visual medium where we can now actually see the supposed color.

I'm still curious about how they'll pull it off though.

I will always think Cage is a great actor for Raising Arizona and Leaving Las Vegas. But, with his track record he might as well be a Kiss of Death (which was also kinda good). I just assume anything he's in is going to suck.

He's been in quite a few good small films as of late like Mandy and Mom and Dad. Cage is very dependent on the director and material he has to work with.

This is one of my all time favourite Lovecrafts. I am legit enthused about this.

For anyone not in the know, here's a reading of the story in question. This is my favorite reading of it. I think the dude's accent really adds to it, somehow.

HPLHS adapted the short story into a very good radio-play format. Top notch stuff with the accents and sound effects engineering.

It’ll be like trying to translate the Nothing from the Neverending Story.

It is literally the absence of existence.
Hopefully, it will utilize clever camera tricks and be mostly off screen.

My biggest concern has nothing to do with the story but with Cage. It's hard enough to create suspension of disbelief without your lead actor's hair handicapping the project. Someone please get him to shave off what's left.
