No. I only like anonymously shit posting. Maybe Discord?

BBS is a system people used to use in the 80s, pre internet. It used to operate using phone modems, but now most of them function over telnet. There are a few left around with between 50-100 users, overwhelming male and over 35. People mostly use them to play door games, a basic sort of text mmo.

You can get started using Syncterm as a client. If you pick a BBS listed here you can play door games with people from other BBSes, and there will be at least 50-60 people in the more popular door games.
Very nice, This might be what im looking for. If there's anything else like this, Id appreciate it.

Discord is good, but it doesn't always jive with me. im just looking for weird but decent alternatives at the moment.

So I’m an average knowledge tech user and I’m sort of trying to learn more, so bear with me.

I have a friend who recommended that I buy a cheap home server and get one set up, and it does sound appealing to try out and tinker around with but I’m still kind of confused as to what the purpose of a home server would be. I assume it would be for redirecting your network traffic? I have heard people use them for media boxes like for storing torrents, and I have a big hard drive where I store mine, but I like being able to read the data on that drive quickly (when watching the movie torrents for example) and I’m not sure how it’s affected when you are reading from a home server (since you have to transfer the files over Ethernet instead of a sata cable).

I was considering setting up a raid system, maybe either for my computer or for said home server, either is fine but I’m kind of confused if raid is even the solution they I need. Raid 5 seems fine, I’m willing to buy the extra drives for it, but I only really have a few folders that I absolutely cannot lose, everything else would be mostly inconsequential. And yet at the same time I’m not sure I want to store my information with cloud providers since I don’t exactly want others to have control of that data. I guess raid 5 would be nice as a solution since I could store torrents there and wouldn’t have to re-download them but it’s still quite a bit of money for that as the only purpose

The Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard, the successor to the classic Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000. I have been using these keyboards for decades. You'll struggle going back to a plain straight-keyed keyboard once you get used to ergo ones. I don't have a particular mouse recommendation.

Yeah, a home server is generally used for sharing files among different computers/devices on your own local network. If you're into the torrenting thing you could have the server itself do the torrenting rather than doing it on your main computer and then copy them to the server. If you've got gamers in your place, you can use it to host game servers too. Assuming the videos are decently compressed MP4s and we're not talking about raw Blu-Ray dumps or something like that, any decent modern home network should be fast enough to serve videos without hiccups. I wouldn't bother dealing with RAID setups unless you're storing data that can't be easily backed up and you would be really troubled if it got lost, and I don't think Minions_3.avi.exe and your family's Minecraft world qualify - just attach a cheap external drive and some backup software to back up to it periodically and you're good.

keyboard/mouse recommendations?

also for people who use programs like blender and maya is the cadmouse+spacemouse enterprise bundle worth the money? or should I stick with the pro and some gaming mouse?
For Maya you should at least get a real three-button mouse, it was created with those in mind(google "silicon graphics mouse"). The thought of constantly clicking a scrollwheel in fast combinations with the left and right mouse button immediately raises my blood pressure. There's no issues with having two mice plugged in at the same time so it's easy to switch between a mouse with a wheel for browsing and a three button mouse for 3D, just put the one you're not using to the side.

A movie like Avengers Endgame on blu-ray at 4K will average between 60-70Mbits/s, that's sub-10 megabytes per second, so that's no problem for any wired home network. Wifi is always a crap shoot though.

Now that it looks like college is opening up again, I'm looking at getting a paid VPN service and not just use sketchy free VPN's. What are some ones you can suggest? I know there is a thread discussing various VPN's, their prices, pros and cons, etc, but I can't find it, so if you know of the thread just link it.

Why do all jobs in IT these days require a security clearance and membership to dozens of cybersec guilds like CISSP? Surely not everyone has to be an NSA-trained-and-retained grey hat to be an AD monkey for a corporation of 45 people that only makes ipad slings and vape pen cartridges.

After finally breaking down after years of using shitty free vpns and just got the year sub of Nord since it was pretty cheap and it's been pretty good and most people I've met recommend it also

The VPN recommendations are in the software recommendation thread null did

I used ExpressVPN, it's pretty good too. There's not a lot of different between Nord or Express, its whatever you preference.

If you run your own server, wouldn't you still fall victim to a casual whois either way?
i'm not entirely sure what you mean. yes you'll be identified by that IP, now they'd have to go through the hosting provider you chose and make a case for them to hand over your information. point is it's easier for them to do it when you use a popular VPN service because no doubt they've worked with them in the past in similar fashions.

it's easier to find a really "bulletproof" hosting provider in some third world country who will actually not care or comply with law enforcement, than it is to find a VPN company that isn't crawling with feds and backdoors. especially big ones with big marketing budgets, of course they're being kosher in the backrooms.

You'll see lots of people saying you need to choose a VPN outside of the 14 eyes. That holds some merit but really, you are just wanting to obfuscate your browsing history most of the time. In the UK, a council or certain party (hundreds of them) can check your browsing history. It's called privacy rape. It's a thing. And you can't stop it unless you use a VPN.

Mullvad is good. Don't keep records. Can send them cash, or bitcoin.

You need to harden your browser, even with a VPN you need to check for WebRTC leaks and DNS leaks.

If you want to see what data you are spewing, check out -

Make sure you aren't leaking any WebRTC or WebGL data.

Don't use TOR over VPN as well.

There are other anonymity services like JonDonym. But they cost.

Just know what you are doing and who exactly you are trying to hide your data from. I don't break the law. Worst I do is surf a bit of legal pron now and again. But I don't want Karen next door accessing that data because she works at a govt. department.

keyboard/mouse recommendations?
What's your budget and what do you primarily use your computer for?
I highly recommend a mechanical keyboard if you can afford it. If you're in the US, mechanicalkeyboards.com is a solid place to order from.
Edit: I recommend any ducky or any varmilo keyboard as a starter board. I got a ducky x varmilo Miya pro board for my first board since they have some amazing designs. Varmilo boards literally look like works of art.

I think it's supposed to do with some kind of correlation attack. Lots of people talk about using Tor with a VPN, but recently a couple of people have said it's a no-go.

This site explained why, but for some reason they have now blocked people from accessing it.

Fuck knows, the whole world has gone weird lately.

Ooh looky , I know how to use search and can access googles cache!

These are the two articles I was talking about:

Fuck knows why the author decided to fuck people about.

============================

The worst piece of advice I commonly see is to use both Tor and a VPN. Tor is not intended to be run with VPN or in combination with other services. I absolutely do not recommend you to ever run Tor with a VPN. By doing so you essentially create either a permanent entry or exit node, which often also has a money trail. You also create more attack surface for near zero theoretical benefit. The two commonly proposed configurations are:

Tor over VPN. Here a user will first connect to the VPN server, and then connect to Tor. The most common rationale behind this setup is to hide Tor usage from an ISP or circumvent censorship of the Tor network. This is unnecessary as you can hide Tor usage and circumvent censorship by using bridges. You can either use the bridges that are included in Tor Browser for this, or request other bridges from in any of the ways described here. A bonus of bridges is that they don’t leave a money trail, which VPNs often do. The last blog explained that even if you were to end up on a watch list, it would be a uselessly large list as Tor has more then 2 million daily users. It strikes me as very naive to imagine that someone powerful enough to trace you over the Tor network will be stopped by a $5 a month VPN service.

VPN over Tor. Here a user will first establish a connection to the Tor network before connecting to the VPN service. The purpose of this is to reach services that are blocking Tor nodes. This setup may succeed in making access to such services easier, but it is terrible for anonymity for two reasons: VPN providers often know you from the money trail; and Tor splits all data streams across different circuits to prevent correlation of traffic as a means to de-anonymize users, but all of your traffic will come from the VPN provider’s IP, making correlation a LOT easier.

=======================

I just clipped the most pertinent bits. I've no idea of its veracity. Still checking shit out myself.

A few VPN providers offer Tor over VPN as a service. NO idea if this is the same thing this guy is talking about.

Anyway, better minds than mine can maybe chip in and have at it...

EDIT:

Have a look at these as well -

Generally speaking, we don't recommend using a VPN with Tor

You can very well decrease your anonymity by using VPN/SSH in addition to Tor.

I want to get gud at 3d modeling. but I also like video games I guess but for PC its mainly stuff like minecraft, strategy games and Nethack. I have like 950$ but theres other stuff I could spend it on like a gpu or faster ram.
I was in your boat a few months ago looking to see what kind of mechanical keyboard I should get as my first. I ended up getting a RedDragon RDK552 based mostly on the price. I would assume its n00b-tier as far as MKBs go, but I have been very pleased with it. I changed the keycaps, but have left the stock switches, and it does the job well enough I'm not looking for a more expensive board. It did take me some getting used to coming from only ever using scissor-switch/membrane keyboards, but now that i've put in the time I don't think I could go back to a non-mechanical setup.

For a mouse I use a Kensington Expert Trackball, which I mention only because I saw you are doing CAD, and it might be good for that. But personally, for how much it cost, I am not impressed with it. The ball gets dirty quickly and has a different speed when dirty versus clean. The rotating nubs inside the ball area are constantly dusty and hard to clean. Although its sold as "ergonomic" I don't find it comfortable to use, I have to use the included wrist-rest, and add an additional rest on top of that to get the right angle on my hand. It feels like a $29.99 piece of kit, but they want close to 100 for it.

Then you probably don't care about not receiving tactile feedback from your board when one plays fps.

The most common and the entry level switches are Cherrys and Gaterons. They both have a similar naming convention:
Wanna feel a little bump when the key is activated? - browns (tactile)
Wanna feel no bump? - reds (linear)
Wanna feel a little bump and hear a loud noise? - blues (clicky)
There's a lot more to switches, but they always fall under tactile, linear, and clicky.

If you're not sure (which is reasonable) you can grab a hotswap board that allows you to just pull out and push in different switches (switches on its own are super cheap). If you're on a budget, I recommend Keychron keyboards as they are alright, wireless, and run for $80. If you're not, the GMMK is a nice starterboard, it's starts $110, has rgb LEDs, better build quality than keychron, and you can customize it a bit before you buy.
