People were originally telling her that Avatar shouldn't be held as the standard of Asian Fantasy especially since it was created by two white guys.



But I think the bigger issue people had was when she tried to say those people were wrong and justify her opinions and turned this into a shitshow. Instead of just apologizing especially when she has been critical of others who don't.

I really don't know what she meant (here's the first tweet), but I have seen criticism that Raya, like Avatar, is a mishmash of Asian cultures made for Western audiences, which could dilute the culture it's trying to portray. Pretty sure Asians had that take as well, at least before the movie came out (same with Big Hero 6). I have also seen a lot of YA fantasies that are NOT Asian-inspired be criticized as "basically ATLA," usually meaning they rely too heavily on elemental magic and don't have enough of their own flavor. A case of Lindsay trying to be pithy instead of precise, which means people don't know what she means by "basically ATLA" and are reading race into it.

Oh, and I just saw her apology tweets. Sounds like I read it exactly as she intended. This controversy is dumb.

I might be going off topic, but it's why I tend to not view "forced diversity" with a single attitude, and judge shit made by spoiled white bitches and stuff made by actual minorities on different levels.
