The "we need MOAR womyn" stuff would have been tolerable if they didn't take their model of female virtue from the ideas farted out by college feminism and its bottomless stupidity. Even back then, (2010-2012) I had no problems with say, Mass Effect pushing out female Shepard and all the female characters coming out in media like the revamped Arcee from Transformers Prime. As much as she tried to move away from that, she will always be in the shadow of Doug, the man to whom she owed her career to. Anime in the end just means "animation." There are western "anime" shows which have similar traits to Japanese anime, not just in art, but in theme. (ie. The Boondocks) Also, Korra was made in South Korea, so that would have counted as Korean anime-if it didn't handle things like sexuality and gore with kid gloves.

Grimdark is best in controlled doses, because if things get way too dark (ie. 40K) then people stop caring. Like say, if in 40K, a bunch of Slaaneshi daemons rape an entire colony of humans to death, nobody would really care, since the 40K galaxy has so much bad shit going on in it that such an event would be as common as raindrops in monsoon season.
