She used a clip of him where he's smiling about somebody getting tortured, presumably implying that queer and gay people are into violent BDSM relationships with abusive nutjobs.

Now I don't know about now but a while back I was pretty sure this was considered a regressive and insulting thing to latch onto queer people, since it paints them as weirdos obsessed with the strangest and most debauched sexual fetishes, and its literally the only thing about Frollo that can be spun as at all queer so I guess we can really take it be the case that Ellis thinks that physically violent relationships make somebody queer and that depicting torture at all is a code for somebody being gay.

Yeah, it sort of sidestepped making the Catholic Church the bad guy, and it became more about this one man's specific religiosity. The archdeacon in the film is a genuinely good Christian man who makes Frollo take care of Quasimodo and tries to stop him from setting fire to the church. I still think they could have made both of them members of the Church and contrasted the wrong/right ways of following the faith. But in the book I think most of the hunt for Esmeralda was licensed by the King, and it gets very convoluted, so it also makes sense to give Frollo real political power in the movie. Being a judge still gives him the black-and-white thinking that's crucial to his character. In the book, Frollo's aversion to gypsies has more to do with hating ALL sinners, which includes his layabout brother and everyone at the Feast of Fools, so he doesn't have specifically racial animus......... plus Esmeralda isn't a real gypsy, she's like a white girl who got spirited away by them.......... ANYWAY.

The stage version makes Frollo the archdeacon again and sticks closer to the book.

Didn't know Lindsay was ACTUALLY arguing Frollo counted as queer-coded. The only other way of seeing it is that he's like a closeted homophobe who takes it out on the person he likes, but again ......... big reach. She should just stick with the ones who are genuinely camp.

Give me a break, everyone and there dog says that movie is an underrated masterpiece. It's not, it was an average disney film for it's time. At most, some of the voice acting was fine, some of the characters were ok, and the visual effects were alright for it's time but look very dated by today.

Not without precedent: the 1939 film also changed “archdeacon” to “judge” to avoid potential conflict with the Hays Code.

Give me a break, everyone and there dog says that movie is an underrated masterpiece. It's not, it was an average disney film for it's time. At most, some of the voice acting was fine, some of the characters were ok, and the visual effects were alright for it's time but look very dated by today.

Oh certainly not a masterpiece, but doesn't deserve to be the lowest gross of Disney animated movies

Once you get over the initial thrill of " tallships in space!", it's a schlocky premise.

I would be shocked, not because they would remade an already controversial film, but because they willing to risk backlash for film that would probably give them mediocre profits at best.
