TGWTG "Nostalgia Critic" / Doug Walker, Rob Walker, Mike Michaud, Mike Ellis, Holly Christine Brown, et al - The Incompetent Predator-Protecting Upper Management of Channel Awesome, Doug Still Not That Funny

what was the video that made you quit NC
I stopped watching NC on regular basis after The Wicker Man remake review - and mind you, I hate this movie with every fiber of my being, but the review was super dumb and unfunny even for me. Though I didn't quit absolutely, once in a while I still cheked his stuff, to see if the show changed for the better. But it never did, of course. I stopped for good after 2017's It, it was some fricking combo of distastefulness, bad acting, and mundless nitpicking so tryhard that CinemaSins nervously smoking in aside.

don't know if Doug has any other haters besides MisAnthroPony and the #CTC crew
Well, there's one guy, a big Jurassic Park franchise fan and former NC fan, who successively and unsparingly smashed to smithereens Doug's JP and JW rewiews, but I wouldn't call him specifically a NC hater.

I remember that episode. It was Tamara’s first, and the whole thing was about trying to get Doug to address the “Not The Bees” scene. Or at least they did it at the end because he hadn’t by that point.

He does bring up an interesting question though: what was the video that made you quit NC. For me it was the Wall. I’d already stopped watching his content regularly and was viewing less and less of it as time went on but the Wall marked the point that I stopped watching for good. Haven’t watched an NC episode in months.
Mine was just after he came back. Hed been vitriolic and pissy, but the Best South Park episodes ended up rubbing me the wrong way by portraying anyone who disagreed with him as virgin losers who were just waiting to leave shitty comments. I think that's the last time I watched anything from Doug.

I started being a fan with the Battlefield Earth review, and stopped at the end of To Boldly Flee, which is strangely fitting considering they ended up being the beginning and end of the same storyline.

Btw, about this storyline. I still don't understand, why Ma-Ti as a villian? Is that because of Scooby Doo movie and its suddenly evil Scrappy? Is that supposed to be some kind of foreshadowing? Is that the reason he picked this movie for his "final" review? Or it was the other way round, and he watched the movie first and actually loved an idea of good minor character becoming a villian despite criticizing it in the review? Is that really Doug's idea of deep throughtful writing or just some coincidence? I mean it's hillarious either way (and not in a good way), but I wouldn’t refuse to know for sure.

2017 was around the time I dropped off too.

I still was sort of a loyal watcher of the guy, and it took me quite a while for me to fuck off completely. I stopped regularly watching by then and then I was completely finished when #changethechannel soured my view of the brand.

Since we're sharing, I've started relatively early with Doug. Found him by coincidence when he reviewed Mortal Kombat Annihilation and back then, even when my humour was underdeveloped and embarassing, he was pretty entertaining and had some great lines that hold up today. The most poisonous development over the years was his voice pitch. I remember his "The Good Son" review to be particularly creative because he suffered from laryngitis during that time and did the entire review in cue cards.

The choice of nostalgic movies deteriorated as well. I understand that eventually one can run out of material, but I never understood why he wouldn't just tackle some foreign movies that are still well known in the US. Things like Felidae, Jungledyret Hugo, The Princess and the Goblin etc. He knows about Wallace & Gromit, he did the awful italian Titanic mice movie, he could've expanded and confronted material that went over usual american film standards. Bobsheaux does it, and he gets recognition from the European fanbase. Research isn't Doug's forte, I know, so that cements the fact that he stays in a comfort zone despite all his wide-movie-range-blah blah.

Even if the #CTC scandal didn't happen and he'd be a level-headed employer (imagine that), the lack of vision and inability to use his typecast persona for something entertaining would be his biggest blocker today. Comedy is undoubtedly hard in our sperg happy world, and you gotta roll with many punches, but if you claim to be an eloquent critic with a refined taste of humour, you better deliver or leave the stage while the running's good. Said this in 2013, and still saying it now.

Edit: Dropped off 2013, around the time when he came back with "The odd life of Timothy Green". I've given him some time to see if he could hold up or regain his oomph, but since it was more of an oof it was time to stop being a fan and only come back to watch a trainwreck.

To bank on the leftovers from his glory era, he had to use a character that represented it. Bhargav had long left the site, so they wouldn't need to contact/hire/pay him, which is another plus (Rob's impersonation and archive footage was the Plot Hole's voice). And since the whole disastrous movie was an amalgamation of stolen jokes, references and copyrighted material, what could possibly fit better than a mistaken racial stereotype who can't be spoken against by the original actor due to already being a ripoff of another fictional character.

Yeah, mine too. Kinda sad thing, since I still non-ironically love a couple of his old videos, but would never rewatch it with same joy like I did in past.

It's a shame Bobsheaux's not as popular in my country as ex-TGWTG clique. His Titanic cartoon review alone was way more funnier and clever than NC's.

Yep, that's probably the most likely case.

I'm still convinced Doug would like to go down the path of foreign films (even if ESPECIALLY when he doesn't understand them) but YouTube's algorithm and Michaud's executive control won't allow it. Gotta chase the big-ticket trends to get as many clicks as possible. In terms of quality control, going back to YouTube was Doug's biggest mistake.

That's a shame, because she was actually one of the better things about the NC revival until she retired from it. Trump might be a horrible president but he's not a nazi. If he was, we'd have dead bodies lining the streets of America by now.

On a side note, here's Doug dressed in drag for the tn of his new "review"

Honestly is it really THAT impressive that almost everyone if not everyone in Channel Awesome goes "orange man bad"? Considering the history of lefty humor NC has had over the recent years hypocritically so.

I disagree on the youtube part because Micheaud still has a clever way to play with the algorithm enough to keep Doug relevant to some degree rather than watch the views decline. On the foreign part, I think Doug just won't really understand them considering it's not the typical american movie he loves to watch, so he'd just call a good movie a piece of shit while nitpicking the fuck outta it and keep going, considering that he believes you can compare a foreign movie with the original Willie Wonka and make a fair review out of that. May be best if he doesn't touch foreign movies again.

Probably so. I'm still giving that guy way too much credit, aren't I😒

See if Doug were more creative, he'd have photoshopped his head getting poked in the eye by one of Elektra's daggers
At least he didn't make a picture of himself throwing Electra's sai at her with edgy face. Though I'm not sure it could be worse. This cover reminds me of that awful Lady Gaga comic Linkara once reviewed, where main character imagined himself with LG's body.
