Here's something I started pondering after looking at the banner on his youtube page, how does Doug want people to see the NC? Like is he supposed to be a badass, some kind of action hero, or is he supposed to be some kind of lovable loser type?
When I was watching pre-To Boldly Flee I was pretty sure NC was supposed to be seen as a lovable loser. Nowadays? Not sure.

You're right about that. The part in My Pet Monster review where he does the phone call with the director and the beginning of Scooby Doo review shows that Nostalgia Critic is supposed to be a loser. Now, it just seems to be whatever fits the sketch that week or just Doug with the NC costume when he does his editorials.

Pre TBF, Lovable Loser. I recall Doug doing a commentary on his review of "A Simple Wish", talking about how he got into contact with Mara Wilson, who took the character at face value. He said something along the lines of "He's not serious and shouldn't be taken seriously, he's a schmuck." Would that I could find the commentary again to prove it.

After TBF though, with the dramatic rock intro and explosions, it feels like he was going for a different angle. Maybe it was supposed to be a parody of action heroes, but it doesn't play that way to me.

I think he does okay. Obviously nowhere near as big or popular as he used to be, but he’s still making regular videos and pulling in decent numbers. Even has what is essentially a steady sponsor or two. Plus he’s smart enough to very very rarely engage on social media or anything.
They also seem to do decently well on Twitch as far as I know with Doug getting over 300 people to watch him play Kingdom Hearts on Fridays alone and people also paying for subs and giving a good amount of bits every week.

Dan is a little late to the party. Why is he putting this out now?

Update: I have to say that this is a very good analysis of this terrible video and of Doug's psyche. He makes a good point that you have to put effort into a production like this and it seemed to be Doug trying to make his version of The Wall that shows off his skills as a filmmaker and actor (seriously). And also to rant about petty things especially cancel culture. I make you a bet that part of the reason why Doug and Rob wanted to do it is to do that bit ranting about cancel culture to somehow fire back at Change the Channel.

Dan also has this in the description:

As a full disclosure, I was briefly a contributor to Channel Awesome for about six months in 2014/15. Channel Awesome CEO Mike Michaud severed the relationship after he received angry emails about an exposé of 8chan I had published on Medium and I refused to take it down or commit to not doing "anything else like that." Several of the songs are a roundabout veiled reference to #ChangeTheChannel, a hashtag that gained some traction in the spring of 2018 as contributors and former contributors to Channel Awesome spilled all the beans about CA's incompetence and mismanagement. What started as a bunch of people sharing stories about how the scheduling page never worked right escalated to Channel Awesome leadership releasing a counterattack letter in which they inadvertently admitted to covering for a sex predator.

Wow, I thought he did a good job of just focusing on The Wall review. Turns out he had the Change The Channel Mention in the description. At least, it confirms that Mike Machaud did fire Dan Olson for creating controversy with his Medium article. These ex-CA people keep making Mike look good with them getting fired for valid reasons (Dan Olson, Allison) or hated being called troublemakers then making shit up about him thus showing he was right (Dr. Gonzo, Lordkat, Allison).

Honestly, the Change the Channel crew are great PR for Walker.

They're obsessive, bitter and miserable. I don't care what narrative they're selling, that's a turn off. Doug literally has to just not shiv himself in the stomach to avoid looling worse than that lot.

Walker for all his flaws, seems happy, and enjoys what he does. Hell, he got to hang out with a rock star for a fan tribute film of Pink Floyd.

Meanwhile, Olson's most famous for the kiddie porn incident.

I have to be 100% honest, ever since the disaster that was the Wall review, I think Doug might have learned some lessons from it.

I could have easily seen him make petty nitpicks about Terminator 2, but he still reviewed it, highlighted the good in the movie, whilst pointing out some of the minor flaws without acting as if Terminator 2 is in any way a bad movie.

And it's interesting to see how his taste in movies has developed as he's gotten older with regards to Matilda. I remember watching a video of his where he just relentlessly shat on the movie, but seeing him going from hating to loving the movie is an interesting development that I don't see many people go through with any film really.

Credit where credit is due, good episode here. Just remember to skip the obnoxiously unfunny advert in the middle as always.
