Just instinctively crossed myself for the first time in years. Christ Almighty.

I'm with @Cosmos . Before I left Catholicism, I actually visited Notre Dame & attended Mass. But even as a godless heathen :neckbeard:, it still hurts my very soul to see it burn. A thousand years of art & architecture, literally up in smoke.

EDIT: Fuck, it's even Holy Week, too.

So when does London Bridge fall down?

Fuck you; you were thinking it.
okay I actually was :(

What's funny is that no one is pointing out the obvious logical question of "if there were no workers at the location, how could the workers have caused the fire?" Furthermore, if the place was absent, then that would have been the ideal time to do something like this.
It's not too suspicious. The workers could've left some fire hazard on before going home.

Look at that diverse fuckin crowd.
singing was a bit haunting though...
The singing was indeed very haunting and solemn. It went on for the 3+ hours I was there, and tbh, I can understand. Hell, after some time, I sang with them. There's not much else you can do, really.

I've heard both that the bell towers are lost and that they've been saved, any updates?
The main bell towers are safe as of rn, 11:40PM. There was a fire that started in the left one around 9ish? You could see the embers from the street, but it was quickly put down.
The spire and most of the roof atop the nave is lost though. They're still trying to get relics out atm, as well as to put down the fire inside the cathedral on the ground floor.

That's one of the Frenchest things I've ever seen. Do you know what song they were singing? I'd actually really enjoy hearing that in its entirety.
It is a short variant of the prayer Ave Marie, mostly known as "Je vous salue Marie comblée de grâce". This is the closest I could find on YT.

Translated lyrics:
I salute you, Maria filled with Grace. The Lord is with you. You are blessed, among all women, and Jesus, your son, is blessed. Holy Maria, mother of God, pray for us, poor sinners, now and in the hour of our death. Amen, Amen, Alleluia.

Not Catholic so I've never had to recite the Creed, but I have a version of it on my playlist because I think it's a beautiful prayer set in song. What you've posted comes off to me as a requiem, and it's really sad to have this congregation stand back and helplessly watch as a symbol of their faith burns against the night sky.
It isn't exactly a requiem, but close enough. I translated the lyrics above. And yes, there wasn't much else anyone could do.

This week is Holy Week, so the devastation of Notre Dame is even more painful to Catholics worldwide. I know because I count myself among them. I feel especially bad for the French Catholics who regularly attend Mass at Notre Dame and all the people who wanted to go on pilgrimages there but can’t now. It’s just tragic.
Well hopefully, it is at least somewhat repaired soon. It doesn't look like the stone work was seriously damaged from what I've seen, and that would be the most difficult to repair if damaged.

All I know is socialists are going off on twitter right now. They're pretty much saying it was an anti-Semitic monument and France expelled Jews while it was being built so nothing was lost. It's disgusting.
Well, I'm not going to go too hard on Socialists during a time like this. They do have their place in the world, as a matter of fact. Very useful, insightful and beneficial lot, like does anyone remember that one time time where they

I was able to find a really nice one with a choir, too. Thank you, though, I was having one Hell of a time figuring out what it was.

I doubt attendance will be low, in fact the opposite. I just hope nothing bad happens when Easter Sunday comes around.

Hey, fellow Kiwi bystander reporting from Paris. I don't have much to add about the causes of the fire, but that was the situation from the left bank of Paris earlier. Here's some videos taken from 7pm to 10pm about. After that, the fire went inside, and a lot of people dispersed.

There were a lot of people kneeling and praying around. It was genuinely very solemn.

And here's a video from the church Saint-Sulpice, in another district of Paris. As you can see, there were people there praying too.

The last time I've seen that many people out in the streets was when France won the Non-US Football World Cup.

Mosque memes aside, this is actually just very sad.
The singing coupled with the church blazing in the distance is such a sad and touching sight. Beautiful and heartbreaking.

They're running with it being an accident, because that's what it is until proven otherwise. The church was undergoing repairs, so it's likely that this whole catastrophe was caused by some idiot's stupidity.
Not to spoil anybodies conspiracy theories, but they are probably correct. Whenever you see scaffolding, and the fire origin is the roof or roof spaces(attic) it is almost always construction/renovation related. Like 99.9% of the time. Arsonists don’t start at the roofline. And roof repair shit often involves things that can cause fires. And you cannot believe the speed fire can move in those horizontal roof spaces until you have witnessed it with your own eyes. Especially if it has vented itself and has a good airflow driving it.

In the US if you do hot work you have to station someone to watch the area until everything is cool. We do spot welding occasionally at my job, and it's nowhere near dry wood, but the safety guy has to stick around that space until the weld is cool and no signs of fire has shown up anywhere. A single spark from an angle grinder could've smoldered for hours before finally going up in flame.

Notre Dame is a UNESCO site. When it is rebuilt, it will be to very precise specifications duplicating the original if they want to maintain that status. Not to mention the Catholic Church will have influence over the process.
It’s also one of the best documented buildings in history. So when they rebuild they will have detailed plans to work with.

I'm glad to hear that. I have a feeling they'll be removed as soon as it's safe, just to ensure they don't have a chance to fall and damage the towers.

Went back out with friends, you can still see some small flames and a reddish hue on the smoke, but from the outside it looks they've got it somewhat under control, you can now see a lot of firefighters on the towers, nothing's certain yet and we don't have much information on how bad it was inside, best case scenario it didn't spread too much below the roof and on the ground floor and nothing went through the stone vault, that's really optimistic but not completely impossible. We probably won't know more before tomorrow and the next few days
