For any venting about Barb's health and her condition, post it here.

I think there's some discussion about if it's Scabies of Mites or something else. There's also some debate on whether or not she's visiting a doctor about it, or if what Chris said about the infection clearing up is true or not.

Any thoughts on Barb's health?

Of course we have thoughts on Barb's health. It's just Chris who doesn't.
I'm curious if he sees it as one of those nuisances in his life, like when your mom nagged you about taking out the trash. As a kid, trash building up in your kitchen and overwhelming your house isn't a primary concern, but I'm thinking Chris also sees applying ointment to his mom's ass is one of those little things parents just nag their kids about. He has no idea what the implications are if her immune system crashes as a result and the infection becomes a more lethal condition.

You're right. He probably sees at as more of a annoyance for him than a service for her.

I wonder how long she's had Scabies. It's not like the hoard is a recent development or anything. Did she ignore it for years? Or has she been going to the doctor constantly for new treatments for a while now?

unless shes scratching up a storm(or worse) chris is scratching her ass raw, it's unlikely she'll get an infection from scabies. if she does scratch it raw and continue to scratch the scabbed skin, she risks a staph infection. scabies is a much better prognosis than decubitis ulcer, as originally thought by "holey" buttocks. although it is particularily alarming because this is exactly how bob went.

EDIT, just looked it up, bob died of heart failure, the bugs were just a horrible thing going on

The infestation again? Are they too embarrassed or too poor(most likely) to get an exterminator? The email that person posted from Chris really just grossed me out now...

Welp, I was just thinking that the "holey buttocks" Barb was suffering from before the "scabies flies" were mentioned doesn't really accurately describe a scabies rash, so I did a little Original Research into what other bugs might infest a hoard and put honest-to-god holes in the buttocks.

Brown Recluse Spiders are found in the "extreme west" of Virginia, which could possibly include Ruckersville. They cause no pain when they bite, but later form an abscess that heals poorly, and looks like a literal hole-in-the-flesh. They like to live indoors, and a cluttered hoard would be perfect for breeding. They're not shy about biting, and if Barb's couch is infested with thousands of tiny spiderlings her buttocks might be the first obvious target.

Anyone else think this might be likely?

Although the extreme western part of Virginia may be within it range, it is not believed to be found here.
according to your own link that scenario is pretty unlikely.

Just wait untill that place gets infested with fleas. If the house is as bad as people say they will never get rid of them.

Either that or calling an exterminator would probably bring attention to the less than flattering condition of their home. Kinda like why Bob got so concerned over the house tour videos.

While Bob's death was heart failure, apparently the bug bites were still an infection risk. So if Chris is caring for his mom as much as his email implies, it could still turn ugly very fast...

Yeah, no, not at all. Thousands of brown recluse spider bits left untreated for this long and Chris would be whining about having to carry her body, which must have weighed at least 50 tons.

I'm really worried that she's going down the exact same road that Bob did. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it bug bites that put Bob in the hospital where he died.
She needs to go to a hospital and she needs to go now. Chris absolutely cannot lose his mother right now.

Considering the holey buttocks tweet from months ago do you think this is the first time she's been infected with scabies? Treatment seems like it's only going to give her a short reprieve before she's back in the same position due to living conditions and literally being in the same position/spot where she previously got infected. If that is the case then Barb would be even more vulnerable and cause a lower risk illness to become life-threatening.

I hope Barb sticks around for as long as possible because if her health were ever to get drastically worse Chris would be incapable of emotionally prepping himself for what's to come. To him it would seem like it came out of nowhere when she finally slipped away. When Bob passed Chris had Barb but if Barb goes then Chris would lose the what was left of his family and the last person he really loved. He'd be left in a house where his Mom's belongings are everywhere as a constant reminder.

It sounds like the most depressing indie movie ever.

Exterminators will not work in hoarded houses because vermin can find safe places to hide in the crap and once the poison dissolves they come out of hiding.

Perhaps Barb had finally had enough of the scabies and is just now seeking treatment. Sometimes people deal with infestations from various critters (not just insects) for months before they seek professional help because they think they can handle it themselves or don't want to pay for an exterminator.
