Last night I got in the dub where Sugar encounters Luffy and Law in the Palace.

I wasn’t paying attention to Sugar’s acting at the Trade Port but yeah, her fear inflections are just awful. I think it has to do with her unique age and demeanor, however.

The voice is like a little girls, but it’s become raspy and wicked with her brain still aging (she’s actually 22 you know) and being influenced by Doffy. Not many fictional characters are like this.

The previous scene however, where Rebecca meets human Kyros, brought me to tears.

Im sorry I hated Kyros’s voice at first. And yes, it was the Spanish accent that threw me off.

You may think I’m racist for hating accents, but guess what, I’m not American.

I have a dialect accent too, and my whole life I’ve been ashamed of my accent.

That said, just two episodes away from the introduction of Rocinante. I tried voice spoiling him last night but decided it wasn’t worth it.

So instead I indulged in kid Rocinante bawling with those stupid curly bangs covering his eyes as he, his idiot father and evil idiot brother gets lynched with him.

Unfair as it might sound with Kaido as a dad Yamato does not have a sufficiently depressing backstory to qualify for Straw Hat membership.
"He was neglectful!"
"Dear God a neglectful parents. Can anyone here imagine something worse than a neglectful parent!? Sanji, we touched on your backstory recently. Anything to say about your father that's worse than "neglectful"?"
Heck Luffy was on the cusp till Ace died. At this point Zorro and Jinbei are probably some of the cheeriest. And I do not trust Oda to not be working on something for Zorro.

It's why I'm shocked we haven't gotten a Kaido flashback sequence yet. The Oden flashback was freaking amazing, don't get me wrong, but at the rate it's going, I don't know how a Kaido flashback can be squeezed in.

I think the problem with a Kaido flashback is we kind of don't want one. Big Mom's was pretty neat but trying to pull it off two in a row with the Four Emperors could come off as cheap. I also think Oda might want to keep stuff of his pirating days with the strongest crew a secret since that's good movie material.

Another side of it is that a flashback usually gives us if not sympathy for the character at least the ability to better empathise with them. With Kaido though , especially with the aesthetic Oda used, I don't think there's either going to be some tragic backstory or a key event that shaped him into who he was so I do not think Oda wants that. Kaido in some ways seems to have elements of Blackbeard, he's got world domination as his goal but he also is not an inhuman sociopath since he still has basic desires and indulgences he goes hog wild with. If he was running the setting he would be a dictator who gave zero shits about the well being of others but not the kind to pass arbitrary rules because he woke up pissed off about, for example, cats one day.

If Oda wants to delve deeper into the mindset of that sort of person he will save it for Blackbeard. Whose backstory I would wager will involved the D mystery and definitely some misery given the mini images drawn for the younger warlords.

Finding that image also uncovered that apparently Kid and Killer both hate curry because a shared crush when they were younger beat them both up for laughing at her face when she ate one. Damnit Oda. It also gave this one for Sanji which merited sharing

All we know is he's just unable to die and he's searching for someone to kill him. I'd say there's some tragic elements to that that'll be explained in flashback for sure, though who knows if it'll even happen in the Wano arc. Oda might be saving it for Elbaf.

Near as I can tell it's less he is unable to die and more he cannot be killed by most standard methods. They've tried an extensive list of methods a majority of which must have been tried while he was within Marine captivity but he is just that bit too obscene. And unlike most it's not Devil Fruit powers so you can't just bludgeon him to death with a seastone club.

Or to look at in comparison it's the assassination attempt on Big Mom all over again. If you're a big enough figure in the One Piece setting killing you is not as simple as a firing squad. Heck most of what Kaido's confirmed to have survived Garp and Sengoku could probably tank too.

Kaido allegedly spent his some free time pursuing suicide as a hobby, something noted when he did a flip off a sky island into the meeting between Kid, Drake and Appoo. But given it has since been confirmed the Scratchman was an informant for Kaido and told him about that meeting his face plant into it is less likely to have been an "accident."

I don't think we're getting a Kaido flashback without it being hand in hand with a Rocks/God Valley flashback, as there's small signs IMO that he was basically the Shanks of that crew:
-Was only an apprentice on the ship.
-His plan to turn Wano into a "pirate paradise" (or "pirate empire" a few pages later), which was the exact wording used to describe Fullalead by Blackbeard. The same Fullalead the Rocks Pirates were assembled at.

-The severe instability of the OG group (which would account for Kaido "challenging the Four Emperors" in his intro; the two onboard with him probably whupped his ass at some point) and the structure of the Animal Kingdom Pirates, chiefly that there's not much in the way of camaraderie and that you get ahead by fucking up the person who outranks you.
--That Shanks's crew can be safely assumed to be modeled after Gold Roger's (not too too big, all people he's relatively close with, etc).
-He probably had a Shanks/Buggy dynamic with Big Mom, if this is any indication:

I would say perhaps he is the Buggy, who is held back by an emotional Hang-up.

Buggy's is cowardice*, and Kaido's is whatever is causing him to be a psychotic drunkard.

*Does anyone thing that Buggy's cowardice is rooted in the fact that he missed out on Raftel when he was a kid?

IDK I feel Big Mom fits the role more, due to the fact that she's the goofier of the two and has a funny look to her (her hilarity coming from being totally insane notwithstanding), while Kaido is generally more serious and drinks a lot. I also just remembered that both pairs like to party.

Was Buggy being cowardly before the Impel Down arc a thing? I thought we only started seeing that once he was getting dwarfed by everyone around him. Shanks missed it too but he became one of the most powerful pirates of his time (and has an agenda he's finally going to act on... eventually). Oda said Buggy had the same potential but was a lazy fucker.
Though like with Kaido we don't have anything past what's already been presented and probably won't until we get the BIG flashback(s).

This is true, however Big Mom has a goal that she actively works towards, as opposed to Kaido who has a stated goal of "Fighting in the greatest war ever." and doesn't seem to take any real action to achieve that goal.

Kaido could have started a war at any point he really wanted, Also..there is a parallel in that Buggy's Chop Chop Fruit could be insanely powerful if he chose to use it properly and does not much like Kaido's Fishy Fishy Fruit, that could have been weak had he not invoked it's mythical status

I think at this point (based on the fact that he knows that Joyboy's a thing and that he's aware of a deeper significance to Wano in the world) it's a safe bet that Kaido's desired battle is the worldwide war that's supposed to be triggered by finding the One Piece. He was building up his army and his power base but he didn't do much more than that because he simply couldn't with what he had(hence why he wanted to interrogate the Akazaya Nine for information about Oden's journey).
