Man do I miss that podcast. In a way though, OneyPlays reminds me of a mini-podcast series like SleepyCast which is nice.

The playthrough has a lot of factors stacked against it. It's not bad but it's certainly a series you can treat more like a podcast.
The biggest one is Chris is generally disinterested in the game. He's not playing it and is barely paying attention to the story. That cuts out a ton of discussion. He's also not as familiar with the franchise so he can't engage as much with Ding Dong and Julian who are both more familiar with the source material and game itself (as it seems they've played through it).
Compare it to Yiik which has so much going for it. Objectively, Digimon is probably a better game but it's not exactly taking risks. As such there's not much to riff and work with. Yiik on the other hand has everything from the story to the characters to the gameplay to talk about.
Or compare them to other RPGs they've played on the channel like FF7 or Pokemon. Chris is more familiar with those two franchises and more actively involved in discussing them. The latter in particular is helped as well that it's so simple and primitive. They can rush through tons of dialogue and not be affected in following the game
I kind of get the same vibes for the Magic School Bus videos as I do for the Digimon Cyber Sleuth episodes.
The only difference is that the Magic School Bus videos are pretty much over and done with, whilst Digimon is still dragging on.

I think Lyle hit the nail on the head during the Bowsers Fury playthrough saying Mario RPG is a fun game, but it's not a good LP game.
As someone who hasn't played this game before, how far away are the boys from the end?

Only half way through the game? Damn, it's so much longer than I thought.

Max has a history of being a shallow fake who pretends to be super hype over games when they are relevant and profitable only to shit on them later when the overexcited consumer crowd gets off the train. You can fully expect an hour-long eulogy on the Remake series from him once they release a couple more games and even the dumbest fucks out there realize how bad it is Star Wars-style.
It was really funny when he was getting hyped up over NPCs talking to him in 7R, with every NPC the check gets bigger and more in frame of his webcam

You are right, mister New Guy, he could.
But, as a person who had to suffer through the entire game, I find it very hard to believe that someone with such vast gaming experience can just miss the rape of the plot or 20+ hours of copypaste corridors and missions. This game is 10/10 at its best but those moments hardly last more than an hour (out of 30) when combined.
And I'm dead serious when I'm talking about Max doing fake hype/shilling and then shitting on the games. You can easily compare his current opinions on games like Xrd and DBFZ to the intense hype-peddling treatment he was giving them at first. He just overhypes things and then switches to the the safe critical consensus among the people who still care to keep face and use it as an excuse to keep dropping games he, presumably, loves so much in favor of the new more profitable ones.
That is not to say that he doesn't love some of them, like KI and even MvCI, but those are far and few in-between and are actually fun if you choose to ignore some of the surface shit.
Anyway, isn't Oney just wonderful?

Yeah I completely understand where Chris is coming from, but im on the other end of the spectrum. I like Nomura's work and I want to see what he comes up with. We'll still always have the original. Most of my complaints are gameplay related anyway.
Always fun to see Chris tear down final fantasy/KH though.
It's very refreshing to see someone openly talk about how Kingdom Hearts isn't that good. I genuinely never got the appeal of them. The plot is nonsensical and the whole gimmick is "haha look at these classic disney characters in an rpg setting, oh yeah Cloud and Sephiroth are here too". I can see why it would appeal to children but anyone who still likes it as an adult is probably a manchild.

I'll be honest, I really dislike how the discussion of the kh series has become only about the story, the games themselves are very fun to play and have a lot of the time great boss fights, but apparently because the story isnt good everything else just doesnt exist in them for some people, even some people that say that only care about gameplay become over analitical with the story every time it is about kh games.
It’s just become the go-to joke for “silly JRPG plot”, I think.
the gameplay can be good and the actual aesthetic/visual design can at times be some of the fucking best i've ever seen.
