I'll be honest, I really dislike how the discussion of the kh series has become only about the story, the games themselves are very fun to play and have a lot of the time great boss fights, but apparently because the story isnt good everything else just doesnt exist in them for some people, even some people that say that only care about gameplay become over analitical with the story every time it is about kh games.

KH games are also among the best-looking games on their platforms. Easily on par with gems like SH3 that hold up perfectly even today. But their gameplay is fairly generic action JRPG stuff, not offensive but also nothing to splooge over. The problem with the story is that the game is structured in such a way that you just can't reasonably choose to ignore it the way you do in other titles Cutscenes and dialogues make up like 30% of the game.
It really is something that is quite hard to enjoy past your teens and it's probably not really intended to by design.

Hmm, I disagree, I can't think of any action jrgp that has better feeling combos or boss fight than KH, and I dont know, I just skip the cutscenes after playing it for the first time, or just directly go to the boss fights I like.

I’ve played 90% thru KH2 and I could not tell you either the story or the gameplay. It’s incredibly forgettable.

General consensus is that the Kingdom Hearts series has great gameplay, graphics, and music, but a shit tier story. I've only played the GBA game and loved the gameplay, but even as a kid, I checked out on the story.

I don't think there is a consensus regarding gameplay being "great" and this thread proves it to some degree. I feel like your perception of it might depend on your personal experience with action games and action RPGs. KH's combat can FEEL nice with impactful animations, unique but rewarding sound and visual effects, fun supers in later games etc. But there is almost no substance to it. No elaborate combos, no fun ways to cancel attacks into each other beyond the generic attack pattern, no deep RPG customization that could make your approach drastically different from someone elses. You just mash X, then run away, cast magic, and then go back to mashing X in the vast majority of battles.

Sorry but I disagree, this conmpletely ignores the actual customization that is in the game, the combo modifiers that are in the abilities menu, how enemies react to different finishers and combo lenght, bosses revenge values, using magic in the beginning or at the end of a combo as finishers, keyblades having combo modifiers as well.
This also ignores how the critical or lvl 1 difficulties are played
