Online Education - Worth?

I want to know everyone else’s opinion on online school.

I graduated college recently, and covid happened right in the middle of my last semester, and my school transferred all their classes to online.

To sum up my experience:
It was a shit show!

So from my piss poor experience, I’m super biased about it, and I’m sure most of the blame could be on covid and my professor/school’s poor management at the time.

Waaaay back in high school I took an online course (probably one of the first ones ever offered). I basically ignored all the work assignments because there was no physical connect to the class and ended up getting kicked out of the course which just became me sitting in the computer lab fucking around on the internet for an entire period.

All in all a good experience.

I've found it to be a mixed bag. My own experience is that it works fine for courses where I don't have trouble with any of the concepts, but I have one course that is wrecking my shit because I came in a little shaky on some of the core stuff. Normally that wouldn't be a huge issue, because it's easier than ever to just teach yourself this kind of shit. The real fucker is the added challenge of a hybrid/virtual teaching model where nobody quite knows what the fuck is going on (or is even supposed to be going on).

My own college seems to be handling it about as well as can be expected, but tracking all your assignments and upcoming exams is a special kind of hell when everything is spread out across multiple platforms and the instructors don't necessarily know that much about the platforms they're using.

The one shitfuck course I mentioned has students split into two groups, and each group has its own assignment schedule. The teaching assistant routinely forgets to make sure that the group doing their lab work "virtually" has information which is required for multiple parts of the assignment (what's the concentration of the shit in this bottle?), and everyone's postlab work is full of holes because of it. We'll see how far it goes before the instructor gets off her ass and notices the problem.

I feel like online classes are distracting as then I will get bored real fast. Then either open up Joe Rogan or 4chan or Pornhub tabs.

Pre recorded online lectures are infinitely better when you can play in 1.5x speed so it doesn't feel like forever or rewind difficult part.
Can't say about non pre-recorded stuff, but my brother tells me it's a shitshow because the lecturers are boomers and that it's harder to ask questions.

Actual learning should be done alongside practical application. Boring lectures and rote memorization should be done as painlessly as possible. Online classes are fine if you actually do the work instead of fucking off.

.

I am a lifetime independent learner, but fun esoteric shit of personal interest not lame mandatory accredited university courses required for whatever major.
I personally don't function in online courses. I really do need to get my ass up and go to class and for whatever reason my brain kicks into drive and I absorb the lectures also have no problem doing my work managing my time. Online I basically struggle to get anything done, I have zero sense or urgency to snap me into gear I just can't get engaged. It doesn't work for me, The most I was able to succeed in were hybrid courses. They just turned into doing all my work on the days I actually went to class basically just got full credits for the course for what seemed like half the time in class.

It's driving a lot of resentment from parents to their younger children, and from parents to their children's teachers, and vice versa.

Kids need to go outside (away from the screens for God's sake), parents need a break from looking after their kids, neither are getting it.

For that matter, it's damaging to social bonds because kids can't be in physical proximity on their own terms any more. Online learning is overall just a bad idea unless everyone involved is a responsible adult.

I cannot imagine taking an online class as a small child with the attention spans some of them have. Or being a teacher trying to make the little shits pay attention on something like Zoom.

I'd rather go to the real classroom, even if i'm just gonna be on the back and not talking to anyone. School and Home life should be separate, and making you connect into an online meeting at a certain hour and use a webcam allowing everyone to see your room and house just seems like the worst of both worlds to me. Not to mention the whole "minimize the window and you'll get disconnected" shit.

If it were still an option after things went back to normal though, it would be neat.

One of my cousins is doing this, and I was over visiting family and she was away in the spare bedroom doing school work. I popped my head in to say hello to her, and fuck me, the little cunt is on minecraft on her xbox on the telly, and some of her classmates are in with her, and they are chatting shit on zoom. No teacher is present, and she tells me most of the students are either doing coursework or playing games if they have finished/don't give a fuck. Thankfully she is smart and does her work, so I cannot fault her for playing games.

This whole thing seems like it was thought up in some blue sky helicopter thinking sesh with bald fucking techno geeks, none with any children.

privacy invasive bullshit

good thing i dropped out of school when i was about 14 when i learned it was owned by kikes and designed to subvert all kids to love jews and immigrants. i planned to self learn but only ended up shitposting everywhere. Recently i wanted to get into computer science and realized i have no hope whatsoever if i don't learn mathematics so i'm trying to figure out basic shit.

I've always skipped college classes whenever possible and either read the textbook or watched the lecture recordings at double speed, but tests NEED to be in person. It's why I'm skipping this semester. God, I wish I could retake the four CS classes I was taking last spring, don't know any more about machine learning nor computer graphics than I did last December.

I still have a whole year to study and I can say that I don't like it very much. Distance learning is terrible and brings only some troubles and difficulties. I hope it will end soon. What do you think?
