Only games journos care about games being "too long" -

Hm... tentative agreement with what you say. The game has to be pretty decent though.

And if it is a JRPG, there is no excuse for it to be any shorter than Dragon Quest VII. Unless it is really good and possibly replayable, to allow me to still beat my meat to Chrono Trigger.
JRPGS are boring and suck

Artificially extending a game is really annoying and really obvious when it does happen such as with Ubisoft games. Who cares if a game is long if it feels phoned in the majority of the time? Games can be too long not because they are 300+ hours long, but because it becomes very clear that the concept or plot should only be 20-30 hours long and not 50-60 hours long.

I'd rather a game be so enjoyable that I can play it repeatedly then a long stretched out campaign.

Even if Doom didn't have fan maps and custom wads I could play the original levels endlessly because the game is just that enjoyably designed. Bayonetta is another good example. That whole campaign is really short but just super enjoyable.

Length doesn't always mean good.

Dragon Quest VII (the psx version anyway) you could clock in at least 100 hours easy just doing the main quest alone and skipping all the side stuff. I still like the game, but it's a clunky, grind heavy mess and the 3ds remake fixed a lot of it by trimming away a good portion of the bullshit.

Chrono Trigger is relatively short for an RPG (I'd say a first time player could probably beat it in about 20 hours) but it's excellently made and people still hold it up 25 years later.

Nah, fuck this trend of stretching games out for no reason. We can thank AssCreed for that I guess. Fill the game with boring bullshit to make it long is not good content. Give me a short and memorable game over that any day.

The average AC game took 25 hours to complete before they released Origins. Consequently, Origins is the last one I played and AC was one of my favorite series.

I think some games can be "too long" but really it just means they're not actually that fun as games and the story is wearing itself thin imo. As for journos, they're just retards.
Like OP is getting at, I like to get the most bang per buck where I can and I feel not many modern games even offer that except for some indie titles that have nearly infinite replayability.

I like story games to be around 30-50 hour and to be enjoyable on another run.

FF13 was too long in the sense it made you wait entirely too long to get your toys. Gran Pulse was a lot of fun but I understand if one doesn't have the patience to get there.

Games can be far too long IMO. When I reach a point in the game where my enjoyment is going down and there is no end in sight, then the game have overstayed its welcome. I would rather have a tight game that is around 8 hours long then a drawn out slog of a game that is 20+.
