Are Otherkin still a thing? I remember them springing up in/around the early 2000s, but they seem to have most metastasized into SJWs, troons and other edgelords since then. That or they just aren't as bizarre as some of the other sad dangling extremities of Tumblr. Maybe they realized they can score more oppression points by calling themselves nonbinary genderfluid pansexual than being a mere Tolkein Elf. I mean, it would be cooler if they were Dark Elves, what with the whips and spiky armor and all. Ah well, no accounting for tastes I guess.
His, it sounds pretty much like the infamous FF7 house. But yeah the best advice is probably to just leave him to it and get divorced. Seriously, my own experiences with "Otherkin" in college were similar. No, they weren't doing anything violent or abusive, but they all did tend to congregate around a charismatic "Otherkin" messiah of sorts and build a really elaborate mythology which they play acted in public. They even had Deadjournals where they chronicled their "astral adventures," which... were kind of hilarious to read to be honest. I think me and my one friend actually used it as inspiration for a D&D campaign loosely inspired by their wackiness (which in turn was loosely inspired by Vampire: the Masquerade, Buffy, Lovecraft, various anime and shit they read off the internet; oh and the "shadow people" stuff they got from Coast to Coast AM).
Most of them eventually grew out of it, at least the ones I stayed in any sort of contact with. We don't really talk about when they thought they were psychic vampires with souls of fictional characters engaged in mental battles with non-existent beings from beyond. Or the time they tried to summon some Sumerian God on campus by reading from a mass market paperback copy of the Necronomicon that they bought at the Barnes & Noble across the street. As for the ringleader, well last I heard he dropped out of college and became a janitor, so... Yeah. I guess he proved his superiority there.
Point is, most of these guys are young and dumb and looking for some identity. It's fun when you are in your 20s and don't really have to worry about the real world. I mean it's autistic as hell, but lots of people get into dumb shit. Hell I suppose I'd still tolerate someone who thinks they're Goku or a Kitsune or Benjamin Franklin over another shrill dangerhair SJW telling me how it's cis-sexist mansplaining to say someone from China is Chinese because reasons. At least the otherkin are more entertaining.

If someone asked me what otherkin were 5 years ago, I'd describe them as "furries who take it too seriously", as in they believe they're animals/mythical creatures. But these days otherkin seem very different, maybe it's just the very visible sector from tumblr I see but now otherkin seem to be lazy roleplayers with a sense of entitlement, that is, a lot more of them claim to be copyrighted characters from modern fiction and get pissy if anybody else claims the same character.
edit: with a blend of mental illness/troonery when the person claims several characters of different genders as multiple personalities. It's total clusterfuck, is what I'm saying, and I wish I could delete this useless trivia from my brain.

I've always wondered where the newer Tumblr generation of otherkin came from.
Like, I know otherkin have been around since at least the 90's, but back then it was mostly confined to small segments of the New Age/Neo-Pagan community, fringe elements of the furry fandom, and over-enthusiastic World of Darkness LARP'ers.
There's sort of a clear divide between the first generation of otherkin and the Tumblr ones, and I'm not seeing much of a direct connection between the two.
You never really saw stuff like fiction-kin and the like in the early days, although you could make the argument that the Final Fantasy House is probably the earliest example of fiction-kin. It was mostly wolfaboo furries, Neo-Pagan hippie chicks pretending to be Elves, or Vampire LARP'ers who took their dedication too far.
In fact, the early otherkin community tried to latch onto the game Changeling: The Dreaming back in the 90's and thought that White Wolf was staffed by actual changelings and faerie otherkin, something that the good folks at White Wolf outright denied, calling it out for the bullshit it really was.
But this new generation of otherkin are so ridiculous, they make the furries and LARP'ers from the 90's look relatively sedate. It's getting harder and harder to tell the parody blogs apart from the real ones most of the time. I'm wondering where this new generation of otherkin came from and why they are even more crazy than the old generation (which was plenty insane as it was)
