See, I disagree. All of the otherkin stuff is highly dependent on other people believing and buying into their claims of literally being this character. They crave outside validation, otherwise they know that they're just playing pretend. They're not actually hearing voices; they're thinking thoughts in their head and attributing them to other personalities. They don't actually believe they're a wolf; they just really, really wish they were and if they can convince other people that they're actually a wolf, they might start to believe it themselves.
It's a sort of self-induced delusion, for the most part, and a lot of it is masking more serious mental illnesses so that those problems can be ignored in favor of their pretend struggles, and the whole community is made up of people who are probably, deep down, thinking they're the only phony in the group and everybody else is legit.
So imagine an entire flock of wolves in sheep's clothing, and all the wolves think they're the only wolf, and are just trying really hard to convince all the other wolves that they're actually sheep, just like them.
Seen this was just uploaded on Dec 2nd (not sure if im LATE) but Im posting the video right at the time they introduce a very autistic individual (Matthew) who identify's as a wolf with a similar ADF look. This doc has a mix of your typical DEVIANT furries. Watch and enjoy.

It happened around 2013-2015, when the Tumblrkin boom happened I think. The main difference between first gen otherkin and tumblrkin is that tumblrkin focus mainly on fictionkin, and having as many of them as possible. Whereas you'll rarely find first genner with more than one.
I think this has something to do with Tumblr's rise in that time to aggressive acceptance of things. I've seen people say things such as "well this is no different than native american spirit animal beliefs so let them have this", in response to first gen otherkin. Then this gets twisted into "they are Inuyasha and who are you to say they aren't?" and inevitable misuse of the multiverse theory.
In addition to using kin as a coping mechanism, you are not allowed to question anything about anybody. In contrast, first gen otherkin forums focused heavily on self discovery and questioning.
Tumblrkin, who most often are also keyboard warrior slacktivists, want everything handed to them without putting forth any of the effort. They don't want actual identities or any help for mental illnesses they might have, they want to be coddled and told they're right because if you say they're wrong you are LITERRRALLY MURDeRING THEM!!!!

There might be an argument for present-day otherkin being a slippery slope-esque "evolution" of the original community, i.e. "if we let people call themselves wolves and dragons what's next, anime characters?"
But I really think that wouldn't hold under scrutiny as virtually no people from that original community stuck around once "I am literally Inuyasha awoooo" people started showing up. That kind of bullshit was a major slap in the face to people who took it seriously and they either left or created their own closed-off social circles. About four years ago in this very thread I made some of my first posts on the Farms and described the situation a bit further, not unlike what @Vandy said in the post above.
As ridiculous as the mindset "I'm a dragon" sounds, for a lot of people this was more of a coping mechanism and a sense of spiritual identity as opposed to just some mindless role play based upon the newest hot movie or anime. A lot of early otherkin communities encouraged things like practicing meditation and other forms of mental relaxation. Sure, a lot of them also gabbed about "astral projection" or whatever, but the process of being able to just calm down and find some inner peace and quiet is something that demonstrably does a lot of good for the well being of people with emotional problems. Ultimately it's for a silly goal of pretending to be a dragon, but there was a lot more humility and modesty in these original otherkin groups than there is today.

Not identifying, that they are the character. Would talk about REAL memories they had of being the character.
