Could someone give me a rundown on why this game is shit? I just bought the game on PC and have been having fun. The only things that seem negative are that some heroes are poorly balanced and the community is full of babies that can't deal with people goofing off in quick play.
It's shit because it's a team based competitive game and you have to rely on/deal with other people. Other than that, it's not shit. It runs on a toaster and there are enough viable heroes in each subgroup (tank, dps, heals) that you can have plenty of variety.

I think both games are going to use the same client except those who didn't buy the new "game" won't have access to the pve mode.
Calling it Overwatch 2 is confusing. It's like it's an entirely new game from the original. The last game I remember doing that was Splatoon 2, but that was released on a newer console.

If Overwatch 1 and 2 and running with the same engine and code, then just revise the original. Keep it as a platform. If need be, do the PvE as a $20 expansion.

What are they going to do for the next generation? Overwatch 2 for PS5 and Xbox Series X or just keep the original?

It's shit if you take it seriously as an esports game, which is what Blizzard intends.

But I'm with you, I have fun with it regularly. That said, I always goof off in arcade modes.

If you are having fun with it, by all means enjoy it. I'll talk from personal experience as to why the game became unbearable for me: I played it casually and after putting some 200+ hours on it I became frustrated by how stagnant and repetitive everything felt. To me the real content was the characters themselves and I originally bought into the idea of having the game releasing characters regularly as the main draw for keep coming back, unfortunately the release schedule for character was between 3 to 4 months apart. I think what killed a lot of the excitement that I originally had for these releases is that some of the heroes and their mechanics were not to my liking so having to wait months for a hero that ended up being a dud was a huge let down. Things got far worse after the release of Baptiste, the following hero; Sigma, took 5 months and then Echo took 8 months to release. Now with the pandemic restrictions the updates to the game have become glacially slow and the only thing that players have to hold themselves over the meantime are the seasonal events that are just repeats of the same events from the early years of the game. (I'm not even going to get into the whole loot box economy of the game and Blizzard's policies regarding censorship because that is a whole different can of worms that'll take me a lot of time to discuss)

Its hard to overstate how retarded the community for this game is. Brigitte is a character with weak damage, weak healing, a weak shield and a 0.5 second stun, but the "community" have been crying about how overpowered she is for the last two years. Moira is a healer with a weak ass channeled dps she uses to refill her healing, but the "community" has spent the last two years crying about her dps being too overpowered. The "community" is essentially a bunch of brainlet Genji players who get butthurt every time a character that counters high mobility heroes is introduced.

The only real shit as far as gameplay goes is by the time you feel like you're really great with a character, it's retooled to be more useful in their faggy ass comp scene that they're desperate to get stick. An awful idea since the game was designed to have a "change on the fly" character select so you could switch as the situation warranted. The lack of real significant updates (I love Lucioball, but every Summer event is Lucioball, every Christmas will be the Mei shit, etc etc) and them doing pretty much nothing story wise with their 30+ characters let a lot of people down.

Prior to launch and for a while after they were really hyping up the "Overwatch Universe" as though it would be a living, breathing world and you would have to follow along to learn all the neat character arcs. What you ended up with was a handful of fun if not spectacular "Archive" missions, a handful of comics that were all essentially the same story beats with different characters in them, and the promo shorts. Archives were simple enough I don't think two a year should have been unreasonable, this years they didn't even make one. They just reactivated the previous 3 ala TF2's modern Halloween updates. But TF2 had like 7 years of new Scream Fortress updates before calling it quits and just letting people play the classics, Overwatch gave up after 3 yearly events.

So at the end of the day you're left with a very fun if frequently, obnoxiously tweaked casual game with no story mode and no substantial updates. I love the game, but it came up well short of what they suggested it was supposed to be. Now it seems the sequel is supposed to be the frequently updated, story/character driven game, but I've been burned once already.

who's gonna pay for it tho? one of the big reasons blizzard dropped it was because they couldn't ride the e-sport train without having to put in much work, and while pve might have more players there's only so much you can squeeze their wallet (while being more expensive since you have to shit out content constantly for players to chew through), and then you have to consider what you could even monetize in the game long-term.

I can already see them turning it into some wonky looter shooter or put the majority of heroes behind a paywall for a "grind or pay" scheme, but I'm not sure that's what people want from overwatch, and it would compete with all the looter shooters already out there (and probably still surpass whatever blizz shits out, even in their crap state).

I'm not buying it on launch day, that's for damn sure. Gonna wait until I know there's enough bang to warrant my buck.

I play Overwatch all the damn time. Some of my complaints are

Other players expecting everyone on the team (exept them for some reason) to have pro-level skills, then getting seriously offended if a shot is missed or a teammate doesn't get healed in time. Like, fuckers it is a game and if you're in bronze bitching about how your team plays like a bunch of bronzes? Rethink yourself.

Other players bitching because the rest of the team doesn't watch the same youtubers as they do so we do not have the same strategies. They don't word it like that though. More like "Guuuuuys! Whyyyyy don't we have a Bastion and a Reinhardt? Don't you KNOOOOW we HAVE to have those? We're gonna LOOOOOOOOSE! You guys are THROWING! I'm gonna REPORT YOU ALL!!!" nevermind that we're in Arcade and it's Mystery Heroes.

No lore. The game was marketed at first like these characters would have backstories and adventures and stuff. I think we got more interesting tidbits of story from the damn cookbook than we have the game or comics for a while.

Maybe I'm old but I can't get into watching it as a pro game. It moves too fast and I get a headache even trying. Oddly enough I do like watching the odd youtube video of it being played.

"Don't you guys have phones?"

Lucio-Os are bland and get soggy too fast.

Overwatch 2. All that hype and we get....hype, and less content on the main game? Fuck off with that shit.

Halloween better be good, or at least not be tampered with too much. I need to murderize zomnics, dammit.

It's different person to person but I'll take a crack at it.

The heroes (as you mentioned) are poorly balanced but also incredibly shallow and mediocre. Each hero is basically two guns, one or two abilities, and an ultimate. A lot of heroes, gameplay wise, don't drastically play differently - and you treat most encounters as the same as you would any other encounter.

The characters that do have "tough" encounters aren't decided through skill-based gameplay (like in most other shooters) - they're often simply decided by game design. For example - Widowmaker (long range sniper) will almost always easily kill Pharah because of Pharah's poor mobility, regardless of skill levels. The game becomes much more about rock-paper-scissors style matchups instead of the skill based matchups most people prefer. It also means that if you enjoy a certain playstyle (IE - "I like playing Pharah") but the enemy team has a Widowmaker who is awake - you are now sizable liability for your team, simply for wanting to play a character you like. If you aren't up on the character matchups, there are quite a few mistakes you can make on the character select screen.

This is further compounded by the fact the ultimate ability is not heavily skill based - it's something that every character gets for free, even if they're constantly dying and losing. You can not prevent them from getting it/using it in any way. It would basically be like if in a Call of Duty game the enemy team was given killstreaks for free - just to "spice things up" - it's needless and frustrating. The ultimate abilities are frequently busted and unfun because you can literally be shitwrecking an enemy team for 7+ minutes and then a guy will yell in Japanese and a dragon will fly though a wall and through your team, killing most of them near instantly.

A lot of characters don't need to exist and only exist because Blizzard thinks that they are "cool". Reaper, for example, is a close range DPS meant to (in theory) excel in surprise attacks - as he has a teleport to mask his location and a close range weapon. However, with player health being low (sub 250) - most other damage heroes can match his close range damage from much further away and while keeping much better abilities. There are tons of similar abilities because the game is so rigid - a movement buff, a stun, or a heal/support abilitiy although you'll get them in different colors and/or flavors 30 times over.

There also isn't really a story and the characters are really flat and boring - and it's honestly baffling how Blizzard could make a game with a "gigantic futuristic gorilla, in futuristic armor, with a laser cannon" as a main character and still have it be boring but it is.

There are no single player modes and 99% of the game is 6v6 objective based team fights that require no long-term strategy. There is never any thought or discussion around where to have players go because every player just needs to attack or defend the single objective. There is no idea of "hey they are at B so we should go A instead" that you would get in nearly any other game. There are not a lot of 1v1, 1v2, or 2v3 scenarios as it's mainly 12 people fighting and blowing off ultimates in pure chaos until one team wins - the second team then respawns and they do the same exact thing again but this time in a slightly different place (ex - Did Team A just cap point 1? Now we're teamfighting on the road to point 2). There is nothing to prevent choke points - as the characters all have unlimited ammo, so a viable strategy is to find a narrow place and just constantly throw explosives down into the door.

Any time there is a 1v1, it's over very quickly because of how many abilities simply take control away from players. It's a race to see who can get their stun/control out first and that's it.

There isn't (much) interesting team building because the characters are so flat - changing from one character to another in the same role isn't really a drastic or meaningful change. The game is locked in at 2 per role, because they can't really figure out how to balance them otherwise and even then there's still a pretty static meta most of the time. The only time there isn't a static meta is when Blizzard makes a change to get rid of the "old" meta and the new one hasn't formed yet.

That's mainly off the top of my head, but it's a pretty flat and boring game once you figure it out and while a lot of matches "feel" exciting, they usually play out pretty similarly and your job in it is pretty similar. I feel like it lacks a real variety short term and long term and that's why I didn't stick with it.

I'd honestly say it's fun for a while - and if you're having fun by all means keep having fun, but the game has some depth problems that are really inexcusable and will (likely) have you getting bored with it at some point. It isn't bad per se, it's just really bland.

How alive is the Overwatch community?

They still look like they wanna release Overwatch 2 yet i'm observing that pepole who used to be playing the game 24/7 and a good chunk of other players don't give a shit about the franchise anymore.

I can get a QP game in well under a minute. A quick glance at the OW reddit seems to have a lot of traffic (although being a subreddit, it's obviously going to have traffic). It's hardly ever updated, which would be a huge reason why people would continue playing it.

If most of the community is like me, you play a lot over one particular weekend, don't touch it for a couple of weeks, come back to it, rinse and repeat. I'm almost entirely Arcade modes so I don't know if "normal" or competitive modes are the same, but OW to me was always a more casual game compared to other shooter/"hero" team games, so from my perspective it's as active as ever. There's no denying the lack of updates, interesting lore, and constant character tweaks took a shitload of the wind out of the sails for a lot of people.

I come from competitive TF2 and the early beta was full of TF2 'pros'. It was great; people communicated and had high hopes. A lot of B/C-tier 'pros' went to OW to hope to excel in a new game, just like a lot of CS:GO pros are now doing to Valorant. It was fun because people did callouts and played roles.

Then the game released and ranked became a joke. You had career mains in a game about counter-picking. It basically boiled down to yet another MOBA full of toxic people who always wanted their way. Which is fine, just not if you're trying to play a serious team shooter, which is what Blizzard intended.

There has been a few exposés on how Blizzard runs OW, and apparently they took major hits repeatedly in favor of their 'esports'. Hiring CS:GO casters, setting aside development for marketing, and on top of all this, the director of esports was apparently a huge #MeToo liability and groped and pressured people constantly, when they weren't busy making bad decisions.

Teams had to pay like 4-5 times as much for a slot in the Overwatch League; an untested new league in a brand new game, as compared to the LoL leagues. Most organizations straight up couldn't pay that. And what was the results? A "world-spanning league of teams from around the world", except London Spitfires is like 80% korean, just like every other team. There's no nationality about it, which is what OW tried to brand itself as. A diverse and inclusive game about the world coming together, but apparently 80% of the world is korean.

OW is to FPS what Heroes of the Storm is to MOBAs: Boring, casual, but tolerable. Except it's full of toxic tryhards, and thanks to the thriving porn community, full of cumbrained white girls wanting to moan "Daddy" on voice, because for the first time in their lives, they've tried something else than missionary in the dark. You see these horny teenagers in all games, but for some reason, this whole "healslut" meme took off massively because of Overwatch and Mercy mains, yet somehow stunted in growth. Not even in terms of porn can Overwatch seem to excel.
