He wasn't born dirt poor, but its still an impressive story. He sold a 1970s Camaro for some used pizza equipment and used an old closet space in his father's tavern in 1984, when Dominoes and Pizza Hut and a billion Rays already existed.

His chain is the third most popular in the world. From maybe middle class to looking Trump in the eye on an equal level....shit. Shnatter could have run.

What's even more amazing is he actually managed to track down and reclaim that Camaro less than a decade ago.

Just chiming in but we have a papa john's, little ceasers, and pizza hut in my area. Until recently we never had anything else for pizza except frozen ones from stores, but recently a place opened up selling their best imitation of New York style pizza and it's much better than any of the other three. Also, Red Baron and a couple of similar brands at the local store are also definitely better picks than the three chains.

I can't claim much for papa john's though, usually we go to little ceasers when we're in a hurry and on the go and want our pizza. To our experience little ceasers isn't terrible, even if there are better alternatives.

There's a chain called Noble Roman's that I think started as a Little Caesar's knockoff, but they've stayed reasonably good (as chain pizza goes) while Little Caesar's has gotten worse and worse. I can't honestly think of a chain pizza that is actually good. Most places out of total food wastelands have at least one local pizza place that is better than any of the chains.

Godfather's Pizza probably has the best crust where I'm currently living. Where I grew up there was a gas station chain called Casey's General Store that everyone swore was the best shit in the world but their crust always tasted, like, half baked. Too much flour in the dough to me.

Whenever I get pizza from a Domino's, Pizza Hut, or Little Caesar's I have to get extra sauce 'cause their shit's too fucking dry.

I don't eat pizza from chains as it's usually subpar compared to even the worst local pizzeria.

This was totally autistic though. Papa John's should have just stayed away from the take a knee thing entirely and just focused on pizza as usual. Did the owner really endorse Trump or is that just whining from triggered people? I think it's best for business owners to just keep that stuff to themselves as it alienates people. Especially in the current year where any sort of wrongthink marks you for life.
