They don't care about hipster welfare queens, and their whales weren't going anywhere, but they did care about internet outrage making their platform a pariah zone for anyone up-and-coming, and for donors to stop coming.
They will instead be subtly and slowly phasing in restrictions almost exactly like what they were proposing, just over a few months instead of all at once. My guess is these fees will just be passed on to creator's take, and instead of getting $4.75 off a $5.47 pledge, they'll earn $4.28 off a $5 pledge. Pretty sure no-fee incest donation circles will be tanked before Q1 end, but I'll put even money on them going all-in on pre-funded digital wallets, since I bet that idea has some real traction with upper management now.
I think what Patreon didn't cave to catlady screeching so much as they realized was they cared about making budgeting easy for the wrong people, that is the Patreots and not the donors. The 0.35 + 2.29% wasn't about the money, what it was about was about is my nice even $50 is now $54.28, which just infuriates that part of the human brain that likes nice round numbers and makes sales spike when the price on something is lowered from $10 to $9.99.

Y'all should know by now that these people dont care about advancing their craft or being competitive. It's all about the free money they can get so they can lie about being successful. I've always felt bad for the users with maybe 6 patrons but they've shown they're willing to try and are grateful for said 6 patrons, whereas you have Dickhead Danny who stagnated since the beginning of 2010 and is ungrateful as all hell.

1) Content Creators are their bitch. Aside from whining, they have no choice but to sit and take whatever Patreon does.

2) Putting fees on Patrons hurts the bottom line. THIS is what made them reverse it. All those cancelled $1 and $2 pledges? Most of those folks just outright left and won't be back. They aren't going to be making bigger donations. They'll just stop donating, period.
This means those precious cents out of each donor that make up Patreons revenue are gone. That hit the income charts directly and had to be fixed ASAP.
So this isn't over. Now that they see that they need Patrons more than creators, expect to see Creator Fees stealthily through the roof soon.
And they only said they were stopping the fees. Not stopping the anti-incest-donations changes. So expect to see that soon.

Patreon was never meant to be your actual income. These posts always make me laugh.
Also how the hell do you get approved for any line of credit showing patreon as your pay. I guess they had real jobs at one point and then quit/got fired.
When applying for credit, you list occupation as "Self-employed" and proceed to the bank's colon inspection department. Its not too hard if Mom & Dad cosign the loan.
As far as I've seen, even though the charge plans were reversed before they were put into action, the damage is still done. All the news and REEEING alerted many donors to the fact that they basically had $1 donations set on monthly autopilot to support troons and professional victims that produced jack shit for months, and ended up cutting the fat. As you said, a lot of them aren't coming back because they're afraid that Patreon will try this fee change again, as well as the fact that the economy isn't as great now as it was when the site first started.
It's a given that Patreon is going to try the changes again (or some other similar plan), because word has it that the processing fees are eating a lot of their profits and are struggling to keep the site afloat as a result. Credit cards and banks get away with this "extra fees" shit all the time by "sneaking" in new fees buried in the bill, which most people don't notice....and the ones that do just whine a bit and then pay the fucking fees anyway. If Patreon is smart, they'll take a page from that playbook.
I know this feeling too well. One of my favorite people on youtube had only gotten 1 million subscribers in 2015, and he has been around for more almost 10 years, and he puts so much work into videos. He does Let's Plays, and the fact his videos that are so well put together are getting not as many views as something stupid like minecraft episode 10000 makes me so sad because of the stuff he does in his videos and how much he goes with the videos, considering he almost always 100 percents them too.
