Oh I think I know him. I remember watching his Super Mario Sunshine playthrough. If I still watched YouTube I'd actually think about donating
He doesn't even have a donate button or a stream. I feel like he may have an actual job in video editing despite his consistency with uploads and projects. The only time he was in hot water, or rather lukewarm, was when he did an April Fools let's play of Mega Man II and was specifically making fun of camcorder LPs.

When applying for credit, you list occupation as "Self-employed" and proceed to the bank's colon inspection department. Its not too hard if Mom & Dad cosign the loan.

When I think self employed I tend to think of someone who owns their own repair garage or plumbing business or something like that. But deep down I know that there are plenty of "self employed" folks that are just lazy ass good for nothings.

Patreon is not a career. if you use it for anything more than supplemental income you are a fool. No pension, no benefits. Nothing. do they think they are going to be 85 and slowly drawing furfag art with a shaky arthritic hand. The gravy train will come to an end and then there you are having wasted years of your time sitting on your ass e-begging.

That's why I don't turn off that pesky adblock. Get a real job.

Pension? Benefits? You're thinking too hard. Try "Resume gap when the well runs dry".

Take long-running webcomic Sluggy Freelance. It has been going since 1997, and this has been the dude's paying full time job since 2000 or so? Lets say 2002 for math, and that this has been his job for the past 15 years. He's just about ready to hang up the reins, so imagine if you will being 47, going looking for a job with "2002-2017 - drew pictures for people on the internet in exchange for tips"*.

Now, there are exceptions to this, like the Dr. McNinja guy has used the success of his webcomic to get a job working for Marvel (I think; the one he talked about working on got shitcanned) and the Penny Arcade queers turning their shitty gamer-comic into a fucking conglomerate. And even "Drawing pictures for people on the internet" presumably at least has you refining a skill, namely drawing, so you might be able to use that and whatever e-cred you have to get freelance art/design jobs.

But think about the people who use twitch to stream them playing videogames on the internet. A lot of people in their 20s, who either held no or low-level employment before hand. When happens when the market starts to dry up, or you get sick of playing videogames for 8 hours a day, and they have to go looking for a job. You are having to start your career back up from pretty much zero, and the only skill you've been honing is "Really good at playing Zelda".

This is why the streamer patreots with any ability to look into the future are moving to LA and trying to suck all the cock they can while they are still somewhat relevant, hoping that one of those money shot facials** will turn into something less ephemeral than "HEY GUISE ITS ME and I'm back for should be the final part of 'Custer's Revenge' video series so remember to hit like and subscribe."

Because the alternative is entering the job market in your 30s with the job experience of a 20 year old. You'll be a stockboy who's older than the managers.

*Yeah, yeah, he got paid with ad revenue and from running an online merch store, so he probably does have skills he can market. (He also has been careful with his webcomic dollars and said his post-webcomic plan is short form stuff with his characters). Don't go turbo:autism: on me, its a not a research paper, its not intended to be completely accurate, just a broad example.

** Yes, I know realistically they'd be swallowing. Again, broad example thought experiment, not meant to be completely realistically accurate.

Aren't pensions made based on what income you put in during taxes, regardless of job? How does the state determine what is a self employed job or not? Self employed artists have been a thing since forever.

I can't tell if this is :offtopic: or not, but in the good ol' USA, there's Social Security which isn't a pension but serves a similar purpose (I know there's key differences between the two, I don't know what they are). You have to pay into it, as well as medicare.
When you work a proper job (called a W-2 job because of the tax form you get from the employer), your Social Security contributions are taken out monthly. (What a lot of folks don't know is that you only are paying half. Your employer pays the other half in payroll taxes.)

If you aren't an employee on their payroll, you have pay your own taxes (these are called 1099 jobs, also after the tax form you get from the employer). Patreon dollars would be recorded on this 1099 "Other Income" form, where the IRS will calculate how much of these & other taxes you owe based on how much money you've made for the year. For Social Security, it tops out at a certain percentage, and there is a maximum dollar amount, but o hit the max, you need to make over 6-figures.

This is :offtopic:
This is part of the reason Uber & other such companies like to hire 'contractors' and make it very clear you're a contractor. They don't have to pay payroll taxes on 1099 contractors.

1099 income has the potential to straight up wreck your anus come April if you didn't do any planning. Between SS, MC, and state and local taxes, you can sometimes pay 50%+ in taxes depending on your bracket.
