Peanuts Specials to No Longer Air on Television After 55 Years - Moving from ABC to being permanent Apple TV+ exclusives

Peanuts fucking sucks. Bitchass Charlie Brown.
There's definitely a deeper conversation to be had here, and I agree with you. I always felt Peanuts was extremely overrated and was never funny as a newspaper comic. The TV specials did very little to enhance the experience. I feel like you had to like it just because it was popular, and it was only popular because your parents and/or grandparents liked it. To this day I really have a hard time seeing the appeal other than "tradition."

Thank god it’s not because they put Franklin in the corner.

Anyways, thank god my parents keeps the vhs around. Anyone want a recording for free?

This analysis does a decent job of trying to explain what Charles Schultz was trying to do with Charlie Brown:

TL;DR: Charlie Brown represents the everyman capacity to keep trying in the face of repeated failure. The first CB theatrical movie really hammers this point hard. As the series went on, though, the franchise seemed to loose focus of this lesson and just have bad crap happen to Charlie Brown for no good reason other than: he's Charlie brown, so the Universe must keep shitting on him.

I must admit, I've a bit of a soft spot for "Race For Your Life, Charlie Brown," because it's the one I saw most often on VHS as a kid and because it had a kickass credits sequence based on Easy Rider.

Shultz actually put in his will that no new peanuts cartoons could be made or alterations to existing strips/specials so we'll thankfully be spared troon Linus and lesbian Patty.

I wish more creators would take measures to prevent their shit being used as woke propaganda.

Well thank god it wasn't because of muh racism

kinda stinks its going away from broadcast television, but hopefully this means the specials won't have to be cut down to make way for commercials

When I saw the headline I immediately thought it was due to Franklin.

Well, that's great. Gate keep an iconic series enjoyed for decades by families and children alike onto a streaming service.

They could've kept them on TV, and added them in a subscription service. No, exclusively on a streaming service.

At least there's DVD, VHS, and reruns (for now.)

There's too many streaming services. It sucks when something I want to see has been snagged by a service I don't have. And for the most part I am not too enthused about original content. I'd rather see classics. I watched Hellraiser and Hellraiser 2 yesterday and they are leagues better than trash like The Room (not the one you are thinking).

I hope the stop motion Rudolph and Santa specials don't end up exclusives too. Wow. I don't even know if PBS still airs the old Bell Telephone stop motion Christmas special anymore.

I'm just not a fan of this kind of gatekeeping. They were fine on TV for free for 55 years. And white the specials will be available for free for a limited time, well, if you want to watch it on the family television you need a smart TV or some kind of gaming/internet capable device to do it with wifi or a hotspot connection. Grandma can't figure that out. My boomer relatives are still convinced that they can get Netflix added through Comcast like it's HBO or something. I've explained this to them a million times...

Peppermint Patty was already a lesbian though?...

This is a good analysis, but the guy breaking down themes is more entertaining than the actual movie. I understand Charlie Brown, I'm just not entertained by it. I can see why some people would be especially sympathetic to the character, but it's not appealing to me. Calvin & Hobbes makes the same plays with a fuck-up of a little boy and it's better art, better characterization, more laugh-out-loud interactions and situations. Even Lil' Abner's Al Capp predating Charlie Brown took swings at Schultz in his full-pagers.

Neg rate it all you want; I'm not trying to turn people off Charlie Brown, but there's people that don't like it because it wasn't interesting or well done compared to other series.

Peppermint Patty was already a lesbian though?...

She was written to be a feminist, in the family-friendly 70's interpretation of the term. What's funny is that the movie "Race For Your Life, Charlie Brown" interprets that to mean "Gets the other girls to hold formal votes over every little thing they decide to do," and "Bosses the boys into doing all of the actual work." Which seems more like a satirical jab at Feminism than an endorsement.

It was implied that Peppermint Patty had a romantic thing for Charlie Brown and was, what in that day and age would be considered a tomboy. So much that Marcie kept calling her "sir." The idea that Patty and Marcie are an item is pretty much an adult fan interpretation along the lines of "Shaggy and Scooby smoked dope" and "Fred and Daphne were fucking in the back of the Mystery Machine," or "Velma is gay." The fact that Millennial kids who grew up with these cartoons want to make their fan theories canon for Diversity's sake, has nothing to do with the intentions of the original writers (unless said writers come out and say otherwise.)

Charlie Brown specials to air on TV, after all, in PBS deal

NEW YORK (AP) — The “Great Pumpkin” never showed on broadcast television this year, but after a deal with PBS, the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and Christmas specials will return to the air.

Last month, Apple TV+ became the new home to the beloved Peanuts holiday specials. That sparked an outcry from viewers who were accustomed to annually tuning in on network TV. Apple offered each special to stream for free for a handful of days, but that didn’t stop online petitions from gathering hundreds of thousands of signatures.

On Wednesday, Apple bowed to the backlash, announcing it had teamed up with PBS for ad-free broadcasts of “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving” (on Nov. 22) and “A Charlie Brown Christmas” (on Dec. 13).

Both specials will also be available for free during three-day windows on Apple TV+ (Nov. 25-27 for “Thanksgiving” and Dec. 11-13 for “Christmas.”) For subscribers, the specials will be available beginning Nov. 18 and Dec. 4, respectively.

There have already been six new Peanuts animated TV specials made after Charles M. Schulz died (and that's not including It's the Pied Piper, Charlie Brown which doesn't really count since it was in production before he died), plus the Peanuts CGI movie, so whatever Charles M. Schulz put in his will doesn't seem to prevent new animated productions.
