Today marks the long awaited release of Persona 5 on the PS3 and PS4. This is highly considered one of the most anticipated games of this year and by all early indications this looks like a game to be excited for if you're a fan of the series.

Unless, of course, you happen to instead enjoy watching other people play video games (either via streaming or youtube). You can instead get fucked as per Atlus.

Ok, now let’s talk Persona 5 streaming and videos. Simply put, we don’t want the experience to be spoiled for people who haven’t played the game. Our fans have waited years for the game to come out and we really want to make sure they can experience it fully as a totally new adventure. Please read our video/streaming guidelines below:

Please, PLEASE do not post any specific plot points or story spoilers, and only talk about the game in broad strokes. (Good example: “The game deals with dark themes right off the bat, with a lecherous teacher and other corrupted individuals.” Bad example: “Players immediately run into trouble with the pervy teacher *spoiler*, whose actions go so far as to cause *spoiler*.”)

You’re more than welcome to talk/show Confidants, the new combat, the Velvet Room, the dungeons, etc. Just please keep in mind that as a singular story playthrough, viewers are *highly* wary of spoilers!

In-game Content Limit: Please limit video content through 7/7.

Video Content

  • You can post however many additional videos you’d like, but please limit each to be at most 90 minutes long.
  • No major story spoilers, and I’ll leave that up to your good judgment. If you need some guidelines, avoid showing/spoiling the ending segments of the first three palaces. While you can show initial interactions with Yusuke, avoid his awakening scene, and that whole deal about THE painting. Also, don’t post anything about a certain student investigator.
  • I know I mentioned not showing the end of each palace, but you can grab footage from the Kamoshida boss fight. However, don’t capture video from the other major boss fights.
  • Must not focus solely on cutscenes/animated scenes, should prominently feature dungeon crawling/spending time in Tokyo.
  • You can post straight gameplay or have commentary.
Streaming Content

This being a Japanese title with a single-playthrough story means our masters in Japan are very wary about it. Sharing is currently blocked through the native PS4 UI. However, if you do plan on streaming, video guidelines above apply except length. If you decide to stream past 7/7 (I HIGHLY RECOMMEND NOT DOING THIS, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED), you do so at the risk of being issued a content ID claim or worse, a channel strike/account suspension.

That being said, Persona 5 is a super special case for us and we’re in ongoing discussion about how our policies may evolve in the future. Thanks for reading and good luck in the Metaverse.

The main takeaway from that article from the article is the last paragraphs where they are threatening DCMA takedowns and account strikes for streamers/LPers that venture out past the first 1/3rd of the game.

Needless to say - this is going to generate some salt. Salt from streamers who want to stream it, salt from people who want to watch it, salt from streamers who are going to eat copyright strikes because "I didn't know" and lastly salt from Atlus (the publisher) as they experience the Streisand effect of "please don't post spoilers" generates tons of extra people posting spoilers.

Here's a little taste from Kiwi Farm's favorite Let's Player DarksidePhil.

Just a bit of early twitter salt.

I doubt this will be copied by other companies since LPs are big free publicity. It's a different story from Bethesda's no pre-release copies, which is a much bigger deal

I'm disappointed only because Super Beat Friends announced there'd be doing a special full LP posting a video a day of it....the day the announcement was made. Now it's only gonna be three vids.

If they really want to enforce shit like this, they should try to contract with LPs so that it's at least semi-consensual (semi because your other option would be to fuck off and get carpet-bombed with DMCAs). And then give them a special streaming version of the software so that they just can't stream beyond that point without actually circumventing the rights protection, so any infringement can be proven not to be accidental.

If they don't want to look like giant dicks, though, it really has to be a carrot and stick approach, with way more carrot than stick.

I see nothing legally wrong with what they're doing here, and I really don't think they're even being enormous dicks about it. I think the LPers are being giant pussies, frankly. But you can see here the kind of things that will be really unpopular.

I'm not a huge game-buyer, personally, but I certainly don't trust the fake game news. Almost all the purchases I've made in the past few years have been LP-related in some way. I heard about some game, it sounded like fun, I watched some LPer, it looked like fun, too, then I bought it. You piss off people like that at your peril.

I personally never understood why some games fucking do this. So far I've only seen four that do: Nioh, Batman: Arkham Knight, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, and Persona 5.

In the case of Arkham Knight, it's particularly baffling because the only areas that are blocked off are the big reveal of who the Arkham Knight is and the Knightfall protocol. It's been three years, so everyone fucking knows it, but the scenes are still blocked off from streaming and from video recording for reason of go fuck yourself which hasn't stopped the spoilers from happening anyway because any capture card completely fucking bypasses the block.

It makes no sense.

@Jaimas how can you be as involved in gamer drama as you are and still be surprised that video game publishers (especially Japanese ones) are fucking retarded when it comes to streaming?

In nearly all cases it's some 50+ year old senior manager who barely understands the internet thinking that streaming a game means no one will buy it.

No, I fully understand that developers of any nationality are fully capable of being pants-on-head Autistic, noble Absolutego. Nintendo's stance on copyright, which I could write pages on, is a great example.

What I find fucking baffling is that so many of them do it and then just shit their pants over it and leave it in years hence.
Your analysis does nicely explain that shit.

Why did you have to bring that up, Nintendo's copyright policies fill me with rage at their incomprehensible stupidity. How are they even a fucking company anymore? God damn it, I am going to be pissy all night now.

Anyway, big developers can be pretty bad for it, but it's usually the publishers who demand that kind of thing - even at places like EA and ubisoft the development studios are usually made up of people who are actually gamers themselves - but the people in middle and senior management don't know or care about anything but the bottom line. (I know you probably just mistyped when you said developers, I just wanted to build on what @Absolutego was saying.)

For the most part the streamers I've seen play at their own pace and have faced no consequences other than chat spammers that are absolutely convinced Atlus will take them down.

Hasn't P5 been out in Japan for almost half a year? If someone really wanted to find out what happened in the story, they could have done it well before the game released in the US. Keeping streamers from completing the game at this point seems pretty ineffectual.
