He was probably hoping that Trump would say something along the lines of "knowing what cock tastes like doesn't make you qualified to be President," and the media would shriek in outrage and finish off BLONALD BLUMPF for good. Ignoring, of course, the fact that 1) Trump is probably the most pro-gay president ever and 2) the media have been at maximum REEEEE ever since Trump topped the polls in 2015 and haven't dialed it back since, to no effect.

Though, honestly, you could say "who'd want to go up against him in a debate" about almost anyone except maybe Ted Cruz (who has actual debate skills, oiliness notwithstanding) just because he's so good off the cuff.
