Petition itself: https://petitions.whitehouse.gov//p...so-international-players-can-come-us-p1-visas

A petition to get eSports recognised by the United States Government has gathered 12% of the total required signatures in just under 1 day.

The basis of the petition is around a Smash Bros Melee player, Willaim ‘Leffen’ Hjelte, who was deported because he was deported for using a tourist visa whilst attempting to compete in the US. After applying for the coveted P1 pro athlete via, he was told that Smash wasn’t a legitimate sport.

The aim is to get all eSports recognised in order to prevent a similar situation happening again. If you’re a US citizen and wish to have your say, click HERE to sign the petition. It requires 100,000 signatures in order to be discussed with the big dog politicians.

“This petition arises from an ongoing situation regarding one of the best Super Smash Bros. Melee players in the world, William “Leffen” Hjelte. In 2015, Mr. Hjelte was deported from the United States because he was sponsored by an American company while using a tourist visa, when he needed a work visa. After applying for a P1 Visa, which is what professional athletes use to come to the US, he was denied due to Super Smash Bros. Melee not being recognized as a “legitimate” sport. Competitors in other eSports, such as League of Legends, have been approved for P1 Visas in order to travel to the US and compete. Given the precedent set with League of Legends, other eSports should be considered “legitimate” sports in order to let players come and compete in the United States.”

So does these e-sports involve an vigorous activity? Any sort of hand-eye coordination? If these count as sports, than many of us gaming Kiwi's would be athletes then, especially in clicker games and the like.

This is really nothing to do with actual recognition as being healthy or gaining the approval of sports fans. If you read the petition it is pretty clearly just related to visas for entry into the united states

It's not really a sport per say because esports require no physical activity other than button smashing but it is some kind of activity that is competitive.
I dunno sports and esports are both in their own little worlds and I understand neither

Really I'd just say the entire system for any sort of competition visa is a complete and utter trainwreck of labrynthian bureaucracy that makes getting a green card seem simple. My uncle knows a guy involved in Euroleague, the European Basketabll association, and the amount of red tape to get a player to visit for one of the most popular sports in the nation is still a complete nightmare.

maybe i'm alone in this. but to me, it's a sport of it's a competitive game in the first place.
does it require practice to gain a skill to improve playing in the game?
and can you play this against another person?
yes
it's a sport

That's pretty much the reason why places like South Korea consider Starcraft a "sport". It's a bureaucratic movie to make visas easier because there's actually a lot of money in some of these competitive gaming tournaments. Economically, it's a smart move.

Gaming's legitimacy as a "sport" is irrelevant. Video games are a multi-million dollar industry and these international tournaments have some sponsors with very deep pockets that a reasonable person would be mad to deny.

Well, since Croquet, Curling, and Pool/Billards are all considered sports, sure why not. Only difference between those and vidya is sometimes you can still win by spamming the shit out of the controller.

So, just imagine you're trying to line up a shot and your competitor jumps up on the pool table and attacks you with his pool cue. You have to parry his attacks and still sink the six ball. That's a real sport right there, fellas.
