To anyone here that plays/knows shit about fighting games, what are some particular things about how Phil conducts himself that are particularly bad? What stupid things does he keep doing? What characters does he gravitate too even when they don't work out? Things like that.
I'll say something about Tekken because it's the game I'm most familiar with. The fact that he seemed to play Paul a lot in Tekken isn't bad in itself, but he doesn't use the mixups or other scary shit he's known for. He probably just remembers in some recess of his gouty brain that deathfist is one of the most dangerous moves in the game when it actually hits.

With regards to Street Fighter, he seems to basically think that his bread and butter "Super Turbo" is the only SF game that will ever matter, and the changes for balance that have been made for *insert Capcom's reasons* are "not the real game, dood." He's such an insufferably stubborn gout-hole when it comes to this stuff. I caught the tail end of a salt-session where he goes on about how Sagat's fireball is only supposed to do |-----| for damage and not |------| as if it was going to make a difference between him getting his shit pushed in and calling the opponent a scrub, or him squeaking out a lucky victory and calling the opponent a scrub.

Anytime he says "that doesn't work like that" is definitive proof he's got zero fucking idea what he's talking about.

Because clearly it just did. Probably because he won't stop touching shit. A well executed block string is just as important as a combo. But, any other player worth his salt would take this information and realize "hmm I wasn't aware that me doing x while my opponent does y causes me to take asskicking z. I should see to it I don't do it again." Instead he thinks the fucking computer had a fluke and gave the wrong programming.

Chooses a character, learns 1 basic combo, and that's it. Never learns anything else and expects his sub-par SF2 gameplay to carry him through every single fighting game. Just does the same shit over and over and never diverts from it. When he does lose he never analyses why he lost because it's clearly the fault of lag or sentient joysticks.

Call me retarded or whatever but he’s honestly decent, in that he’s better than the average or casual player. That said he’s not even remotely close to competing on the levels of a lot of the god gamers in fighting games. He can complain about it all he wants, but he also needs to realize that SFII Turbo was like 20 years ago and the backbone of fighters have changed in that time. If he was to play Mortal Kombat or something from that era, he would do fine imo, but as he’s shown, if given a “modern” fighter his playing is the equivalent of driving a car with the E-brake on.

So I believe him that if I played him on an arcade cabinet, he’d win pretty easily, even though it’s not saying much since the last fighter I played was MvC 3 and I never got a single win online.

No, he is not decent, he is average at best. Everything he does can be learned in 1-2 months tops and I'm pretty sure everybody at my monthly locals can beat him in a ft5 or ft10. (And we're just some old fucks who haven't even played "competitively")
Just look at him playing old games like 3rd Strike or even MVC2 which he should be pretty decent in, but just isn't.

Clearly that's due to the shitty net code and ahnline lag.

He does well at these games until he ranks up a bit and starts fighting people that didn't just pick up the game. Then he gets trashed. So this I think is the best description of his fighting game skill.

It should be noted that quite a few fighting game streamers even set up stick cams, or such. Literally 95% of his claims that he's "BLOCKING THAT" could be validated if he was to do suck a simple thing. Be he won't because it would prove its horse shit. That and you can sometimes just hear him smash the buttons as hard as he can when he clearly should just be blocking or trying to loudly mash out while trying to tech a throw. It is really fucking blatant he isn't doing it right on fucking audio alone.

A YouTube named Soma Julius did breakdown on inputs for SFV for Phil. Not only does DSP mash to an extreme degree(due to the 6.2 frame delay plus 4 frame latency some mashing is required for full 5-6 string combos) but he doesn't understand fundamentals.

What I mean by this is, he doesn't get basic fighting game mechanics anymore. He learns a basic 3-4 string combo or mashes to win basically.

He doesn't understand
. Mixups(i.e. he I'll try to repeat the same inputs over and over making him super predictable allowing competent players to make reads and just "cheese" Phil)

. Frame Delay & punishable reads(I.e. Phil does not know that Cammy fMP is +3 on block allowing her to string off it repeatedly and punish players who press buttons. This is lost on him and will refuse to learn the matchup)

. Character hitbox and tech(i.e. Phil constantly whiffs his combos or kicks/punches and will say something along the lines of "WTF I HIT HIM THOUGH" when in reality he has not look at the hitbox on a attack to properly gauge distance in a grid practice room)

. Defense(Phil does not practice defense and cross up blocking behavior, in fact he never practices)

. Conditioning(Phil does not play mindgames with players and condition of hers into doing what he wants. This is a very important fundamental in fighting games as certain reactions or reads are needed in higher tiers to pull out a win. Some people just don't press buttons and have a solid defense, mind games must be utilized especially in a prediction based game like SFV)

. PRACTICE

Phil just doesn't invest into the games he plays and refuses to watch what he did wrong or go to training and test out various things to figure out how to stuff things. He will always be just a typical pub shitter until then as his glory days are long past.

Might even be more than that. He's insisted on using an HDTV instead of a low-lag monitor, which is something anyone that knows dick about fighting games would probably balk at. Most tvs add upwards of 10ms of lag in addition to what the game and internet will add. There's a reason that people use monitors at tournaments. It's also cheaper, but we know by now he doesn't go with the cheap and reasonable option.

Now that you mention it I don't think I have have seen him just doing a training mode in a fighting game, or any game what so ever. I also have never seen him view a recording of a match of any game to see what he did wrong and to improve.

Phil does do training mode footage (I think he calls it "in the lab"), but it's mainly just searching for that one combo he can spam online.

I play fighters and just now saw this thread. So pardon the bump.

Phil's absolute worst mistakes when it comes to fighters is that he doesn't adapt and he doesn't do any lab work or research. What I mean by "lab work" is going into training mode and figuring shit out. It's called "hitting the lab." In the lab is where you figure out that Blank move is safe, blank move is plus on block and etcetera. Hitting the lab is something that anyone who really plays fighters does. It's impossible to "git gud" without putting in the work.

So Phil puts in the minimum amount of work in the lab. He'll figure out a combo, the application of the special moves/supers, gimmicky things, he'll learn an anti-air and that will be the extent of it. Then of course he bitches when he loses, blames it on something when 99.9% of the time it was his fault because he sucks and didn't put in the work.

As far as characters he gravitates to I would say he sticks to easy to understand characters (mostly zoners/shoto's*) and any character that was in ST.

*A "Zoner" is a character that can keep you out with fireballs and really good pokes. A "Shoto" is any character that has the following: a fireball, a shoryuken, and maybe a tatsu (some kind of move that let's them in and maybe bypasses fireballs). I.E. Ryu, Ken, Akuma, Sakura and Sagat.

I played a bit of Tekken and I can tell you that the kind of shit Phil does in that is very, very basic shit that anyone could figure out in a day or so.

Honestly, I wouldn't even say he's average. Back in the day when there were fewer people playing these games then sure. But nowadays? No way. Phil is easily below average.

Guys you don't get it, his detractors are clearly using the excel spread sheets to make online lag even worse.

Phils excuses are just sad lol.

Lol the only reason Phil even ever liked fighting games was it was the only place he could express aggression against other males without fear of actually getting his ass kicked in person. That's why he still touts his 4th place finish in a shitty glitched fighting game as his greatest accomplishment.

Phil's worst habits are shown clearly in his lets play of the newest Smash Bros game. While not exactly a demanding fighting game with a very easy entry barrier, its a game that demands a strong set of fundamentals and a slight degree of creativity and fludity in order to play at a competitive level.

Which is why he pussied out on playing 1v1 online. Or played it past launch date

Phil really relies on 1 dimensional movement and auto combos. He chooses to spam down b with every character he touches and has no degree of adaptability. He regularly places 4th in every casual free for all, and has no spacial awareness of whats going on. Id comment on more, but hes just bad at a game that isnt just jump and fireball. Really boring too.

Low Tier God and Phil dont consider Smash as a legitimate fighting game. In Low Tier God's case, he got bodied by Anti, a smash bros player who doesnt touch street fighter, in a game of Street Fighter V. In Phil's case he just sucks.

Say what you will about playing an autistic fighting game about Nintendo characters, but its a game that tests your fundamentals.
