Phil Fish is a French Canadian developer, (or was. Not sure what to put). His game, Fez, was mostly just a copy of the Nintendo Wii game Super Paper Mario, but for a copy, it was considered pretty good.

Then, he announced Fez 2. And got in a drama filled war with multiple people over Twitter.

He even said to an indie Japanese developer that "All japanese games suck".

And, because of this, he got doxed, quit everything, and got his own ED page.

Phil Fish is the biggest crybaby and loser in video game history. Game designers always have to put up shit with publishers and fans but Phil Fish thinks he is exception. He could never work with a publishing company or a major design studio since no professional would put up with his temper tantrums and his drama queen personality.

It used to be that Phil Fish seemed pretty unique but due to things going on lately an indie dev who says stupid shit on twitter isn't that hard to find. Brianna Wu is a fucking goldmine of crazy tweets and you don't have to even know about a certain recent topic to really appreciate the batshit insanity.

it's a shame this thread was made now post his disappearance as opposed to when he was in his prime.

before fez, way before gamergate, fish was a small fry. he was really whiny and opinionated on the indecade forum—and that was when he was best suited for lolcow status imo. he's always desperately craved attention in the manner of a small child, impulsively shitting on anybody who's opinion his ego clung too. who's opinion he cared about. it's pretty telling and perplexing at the same time about his character.

i think that he acted the way he did after Fez because he knew he made something beautiful.

but like a lover, a video game must actually have interest—playability—to be worth noting. fish made a beautiful, boring-as-fuck game and it took him near half a decade to. and tens of thousands of dollars. i think he felt his praise lightly and without warrant. i think he felt his criticism heavily. he was waiting for an excuse to cancel his second game because he couldn't live up to his impossible standards. it could be said that fish is like stanley kubrick in a diaper.

i honestly think that, if a group similar to the following of CWC were to have found him pre-Fez that he would have easily stooped down to that level.

i would have liked to see where Fez II would have gone. it's hard to argue that his sub-par genius justifies his unbearable douche personality that has haunted him like a dick-banshee, but i'm cursed with hope of a better future for these fucklers of game devs.

his averred self-doxxing was cringe-worthy and unarguably the nail on the coffin for him. there are only what-ifs now. his mutton-chops are ugly and i would not have sex with them.

He's a living example of everything fucking wrong with American independent game development, a major part of the IGF and Indiecade scandals (see: Gamergate), and the fact that he's considered the face of stateside Indie development when awesome games (that indeed were more successful than his shit) like the Shantae series have had to struggle with obscurity whilst his shit has gotten front-and-center stage due to the people he's close to is fucking infuriating. It's even worse when you consider that he had a horrible fucking movie designed to suck his dick and paint him as a flighty misunderstood auteur genius (Indie Game: The Movie) which was essentially bankrolled by the same people that paid his way through IGF.

The man is 100% pure ego, believing himself to be the fucking patron saint of vidya, when his game relentlessly steals from other ideas and moreover, wasn't anywhere near as successful as Phil made it out to be (on Xbox Live, it's been outsold by Bionic Commando: Rearmed). His ideas are stolen from other, far better games, and he has zero respect whatsoever for where gaming came from nor where it could go. The only saving grace he has is that he was smart enough to fuck off when he saw the writing on the wall. If there's any justice in this world, the next time we'll see him is facing a fucking RICO statute.

That was 20 minutes of "leave Phil Fish alone". The writer missed the most important part. When you're famous -- no matter what you are famous for -- you are held to a higher standard and level of scrutiny by the public that they themselves do not hold each other to. That is part of being famous. Phil acted like a total twat to others and he was rightfully called out on it. He could have pumped the brakes on his hate train at any point but he chose not to and decided to push forth in being a huge fucking baby. He deserves everything he got.

Also, IGF was rigged anyways. Of course his acceptance speech showed no humility; he was supposed to win. What was that about circlejerking not existing?

Fish is the reason why I won't touch indie developed games, I don't want my money going to his ilk, and I don't have the time to research every developer to see if they are a part of the incestuous indiedev mess, so I just stay away.

There's a phenomenon, I don't know the exact name for it, where being famous can make a person feel that they're essentially invincible, and that they can get away with basically anything. Apparently it's something to do with people constantly getting their egos stroked, to the point where they basically have no self-doubt. Unfortunately, sometimes doubt is legitimate and useful, e.g. "It's not a good idea to pick up a prostitute when you're under contant public scrutiny," or "Don't beat people up with a baseball bat, you'll get arrested," or, in this case, "Maybe people won't forgive you when you say something unpleasant, even if you are successful." Mr Fish appears to have fallen victim to this phenomenon without even being a major celebrity.
