Wait they had a breach already? I saw that screen and thought that they were just making sure they wouldn't get breached because they still hadn't gotten launched yet last time I heard about this site.
Apparently Pillowfort's staff said that they're aware of the domain's regulations and will change domains in the future, alongside reducing the price for creating an account for the site. I'm doubting that even once they made that change they'll attract much attention.
Not even Mastodon has and it's available to anyone for free and at least in theory, could be actually better than Twitter's shitty interface.
They 100% missed their chance here, if they had been open when the "no nsfw anymore!" rule was made public they would've had a huge boost in user base. I don't know why keys are $5 each, why not just have a premium member tier like every other website?

Mastodon's only attracted attention from the craziest and most paranoid people on Twitter, and even they have a Twitter account because they realize deep down that nobody's going to jump to a social media site with a tiny userbase. The forced fragmentation where instances can block each other meaning you can't see or follow your friends makes it worse.
A social network is a little different than a forum. If you can't connect to half your friends who are even on the same thing, and that thing already has an utterly tiny footprint, just because it's completely balkanized, then you're not going to use it.
That's why Faceberg is still a thing as shitty as it is. Everyone's on it. Your goddamn mom is on it. Etc.

Except social media sites boomed because "all your friends are on it". It's one of the big reasons why the big social media sites can hold onto as much market share as they do. Facebook tries to be "the" place where all your communication with your friends happens on from posts they can see to messaging via Facebook Messenger to even Facebook Marketplace trying to compete with Craigslist except you need to sign in and give your info to the Zuck to use it.
Federated social media services are already a niche, and instance blocking effectively makes it forcefully fragmented. Twitter's already bad enough with the blocklist nonsense, if you follow a few people or tweet specific things you're bound to find yourself pre blocked from people you've never even heard of until you saw a message saying you're blocked. Instance blocking takes it to the next level because two friends could find themselves blocked for being on the wrong instance.

Pillowfort was just shilled by The Daily Dot with a fluff piece talking about how great it is. The notable part is that it lists a whole lot of "communities" on the site:

And likely for the same reason as WritScrib: where the developers just couldn’t understand why a site that looks and operates like it’s still in the alpha stages with no real plan for what features to prioritize in development, and run by a bunch of busybody Tumblrites who are more concerned with creating a Cool Kids Club built on a vague sense of “comfort” rather than a business could possibly look unappealing from an outsider’s perspective.
That and I’ve noticed that a lot of Tumblr cliques (most notably fandoms) are already being drawn to Discord for a number of reasons (like the ability to shun Undesirables and people who fancy themselves top dogs in their fandom/community to keep it that way by putting themselves in admin/mod positions) so I doubt people are interesting in finding another social media site to replace Tumblr when they’re finding an a la carte system where they can look cool and exclusive and talk shit within the comfort of a real echo chamber.
