Really bad timing, too. A lot of people are getting fed up with Tumblr as of late because they got banned from the Apple store, because they can't seem to run their website well enough to delete child pornography, and, as of late, the tumblr bots have been flagging sfw posts as nsfw, namely due to the bot mistaking things from shirtless Mario to beets as "female-presenting-nipples. Basically the bot bans lumps because it thinks they're nipples.

Even though I can't imagine Pillowfort allows nsfw, it might appeal to Tumblr users due to it not flagging all of their shit as porn. Unfortunately I'm not under the impression that either site is run by anyone competent, but we'll see how this goes. People always say they're going to quit Tumblr for another Tumblr knockoff site when Tumblr staff adds an unnecessary and flawed update, but they can never stay away.
It's weird how the users are complaining about tumblr stuff saying "female-presenting nipples" when they're the exact people who created this genderspecial bullshit to begin with. If they said "REEEEmale nipples" there would be an even bigger tantrum.

Y'all think Pillowfort, like all lolcow sites, completely suck at server administration?

I'd imagine them not even using an SSH key on the servers and just going by plaintext password.

Wait they had a breach already? I saw that screen and thought that they were just making sure they wouldn't get breached because they still hadn't gotten launched yet last time I heard about this site.

so thanks for the compliment, skank.

I'd like to say that .io websites Cannot host anything nsfw, and that moving to pillowfort because of the nsfw ban on tumblr is an assbackwards move that'll cost you 5 bucks.

Apparently Pillowfort's staff said that they're aware of the domain's regulations and will change domains in the future, alongside reducing the price for creating an account for the site. I'm doubting that even once they made that change they'll attract much attention.

Not even Mastodon has and it's available to anyone for free and at least in theory, could be actually better than Twitter's shitty interface.

They 100% missed their chance here, if they had been open when the "no nsfw anymore!" rule was made public they would've had a huge boost in user base. I don't know why keys are $5 each, why not just have a premium member tier like every other website?

Mastodon's only attracted attention from the craziest and most paranoid people on Twitter, and even they have a Twitter account because they realize deep down that nobody's going to jump to a social media site with a tiny userbase. The forced fragmentation where instances can block each other meaning you can't see or follow your friends makes it worse.

Fragmentation solves several underlying issues with current social media sites. Its what will let SJW types be on the same website as Trump supporters. It's one of the few problems that Reddit has actually solved.

A social network is a little different than a forum. If you can't connect to half your friends who are even on the same thing, and that thing already has an utterly tiny footprint, just because it's completely balkanized, then you're not going to use it.

That's why Faceberg is still a thing as shitty as it is. Everyone's on it. Your goddamn mom is on it. Etc.

Except social media sites boomed because "all your friends are on it". It's one of the big reasons why the big social media sites can hold onto as much market share as they do. Facebook tries to be "the" place where all your communication with your friends happens on from posts they can see to messaging via Facebook Messenger to even Facebook Marketplace trying to compete with Craigslist except you need to sign in and give your info to the Zuck to use it.

Federated social media services are already a niche, and instance blocking effectively makes it forcefully fragmented. Twitter's already bad enough with the blocklist nonsense, if you follow a few people or tweet specific things you're bound to find yourself pre blocked from people you've never even heard of until you saw a message saying you're blocked. Instance blocking takes it to the next level because two friends could find themselves blocked for being on the wrong instance.

Pillowfort was just shilled by The Daily Dot with a fluff piece talking about how great it is. The notable part is that it lists a whole lot of "communities" on the site:
Best Pillowfort Communities
Communities are one of the best ways to quickly populate your home feed, find new blogs, and get to know other Pillowfort users. While Pillowfort is still a relatively small platform, there’s an enormous number of Communities already available. The most popular Community, BetaUsers, sports over 6,000 members, followed by cats with nearly 2,000 users.

LGBTQ
If you’re looking to meet up with queer folks on Pillowfort, LGBT sports over 1,700 members and features discussions on everything from TV series with LGBTQ representation to blog posts about growing up queer. Then there’s Transgender and AroAce for individual groups within the letters. For more specific interests, users can also check out ~Queers on TV~ and femslash, the latter of which dedicated entirely to “ships and fandoms” of queer women in love with each other.

Geek
Meanwhile, for geeks on Pillowfort, there’s already an enormous selection dedicated to video games, comics, and more. Popular choices include Marvel, Overwatch, dragon-age, DnD, and Star Trek. Then you’ll find Fanfiction and ArtistAlley for the more artistically-inclined fans out there.

NSFW Pillowfort
Last but not least, if you’re looking for adult content, Pillowfort hosts a ton of NSFW blogs and communities. NSFW is one of the biggest communities around, and LewdDraws hosts illustrated adult content. For something a little kinkier, BDSM – Adults Only focuses specifically on fetish content, and Tumblr NSFW Art, BDSM, Kink and Sex-Work Refugees features 18-plus content of all kinds. While not all posts are NSFW, there’s also Teratophilia for monster-lovers, which lets users share 18-plus stories and pictures within the Community.

A lot of them seem dead and that's because pillowfort is kinda dead, they can't handle all the new users trying to run from Tumblr. Chances are most will end up using Twitter or other sites anyhow.

$5 registration eh? So that's how you combat conflicting opinions hate speech, you just make Something Awful.

I'm genuinely not surprised they had a data breach, in fact right before I saw that post I was going to post about how they're probably gonna have a data breach. These guys sound like peak incompetent.

everyone's going to leave to pillowfort for half a day just like everyone left to writscrib for half a day
except this time it'll cost them 5$
And likely for the same reason as WritScrib: where the developers just couldn’t understand why a site that looks and operates like it’s still in the alpha stages with no real plan for what features to prioritize in development, and run by a bunch of busybody Tumblrites who are more concerned with creating a Cool Kids Club built on a vague sense of “comfort” rather than a business could possibly look unappealing from an outsider’s perspective.

A social network is a little different than a forum. If you can't connect to half your friends who are even on the same thing, and that thing already has an utterly tiny footprint, just because it's completely balkanized, then you're not going to use it.

That and I’ve noticed that a lot of Tumblr cliques (most notably fandoms) are already being drawn to Discord for a number of reasons (like the ability to shun Undesirables and people who fancy themselves top dogs in their fandom/community to keep it that way by putting themselves in admin/mod positions) so I doubt people are interesting in finding another social media site to replace Tumblr when they’re finding an a la carte system where they can look cool and exclusive and talk shit within the comfort of a real echo chamber.
