In 2008 the Foreign Office told the Royal Navy to not capture pirates because they could then claim asylum in the UK under the Human Rights Act of 1998, depending on the punishment that awaits them if sent back to where they came from (and I'm not sure if that's Nigeria, where the ship set sail and I assume where the hijackers are from, or Liberia, where the ship is flagged and registered). If it's the former, they would almost certainly try to claim asylum.

(Hilariously, the Liberian Registry has a great anti-piracy program with extensive library, including a chapter on stowaways.)
Tons of ships are registered in Liberia to avoid higher taxes and bypass laws that most other states have. Same applies to countries like Singapore, Panama and the Marshall Islands. So they probably aren't from Liberia, the ship is merely flying the flag to dodge taxes and laws.

True, the owners are Greek.

But the hijackers were Nigerian.

And I am completely ignorant of maritime law, so I have no idea how piracy is dealt with. Are the capturing authorities the ones who deal the punishment? The registering authority? It's anarchy at sea!

There's international accords that are responsible for maritime law, and I doubt they ever changed the part that reads "Piracy is punishable by summary execution." That said, you don't even need to tell the SBS guys "Crew Expendable" since they're all in that panic room safe from the totally-not-hijackers. So much for Britannia ruling the waves. Enjoy being slaves.

Letters of marque are only useful when a nation flies cargo under its own flag so you can have some random dude go steal their shit for then get to and say he's their problem to deal with, not yours. Unfortunately, nobody ships cargo on ships that fly their own nation's flag, so unless the USA goes to war with Panama or Liberia, naval shipping is off-limits. And if things go to the point of unrestricted commerce warfare where anything headed that way is fair game... the Mark 48 torpedo is far more effective than PMC's.

Can you spare a few MIRVs for Brussels? Just airburst a couple over the EU parliament.

Nothing of value will be lost.
I mean, we have to figure out the exact accuracy somehow, so what could be better than to aim a barrage of MRVs on the EU Parliament at Brussels as a starter. Use that data to refine targeting data and trajectory prediction for the second barrage.

It's still there, and intentionally so. There are usually guns stored in the citadel in case the pirates find a way in or the crew makes the dicision to fight them off.

Though in this case being a short distance from a handful of reasonably powerful navies probably made that unnecessary.

I cant wait until some heart bleeding liberal tries to make this political SOMEHOW.

"Why not negociate with them?!"

Because, honey, believe me when I say this...these people can rarely be reasoned with. Their minds are already set over what they want and if they wil kill you or not (hint, its almost always the former). They are there to get what they want and they wont leave unless its their souls departing their dead brown husks of bodies. You cant "negociate" with them because they much rather kill all the hostages, burn al the cargo and try to escape just to spite their enemies. You cant reason with the unreasonable. You cant ask your enemies to kindly leave your temple, you force them...

"Why not just arrest them?!"

Because life is not a fucking movie or cartoon, arresting someone can be comically harder than simply killing them and not always its up to you. The person needs to be ready to surrender as much you are wishing to arrest him. Pirates would prefer death over being captured, sometimes thats due to the humiliation, sometimes because they know prison will be worse than death, sometimes because their culture forbids them of getting captured so might as well go down fighting. When you see them, already know that only one is walking off and you better make sure its you.

"JUST LET THEM TAKE THE CARGO, IT CAN BE REPLACED, LIVES CANT."

Im going to ask you to stop reading into your liberal social media feed and look at the real world for a fucking second. Life isnt as idealistic as you think, or rather, not your brand of "pseudo-idealism" which is dropped at the first sign of an inconvenience to you. Cargo can be replaced? Sure but anyone who knows how economics and the market work know that its going to be a massive bitch to do so and anyone with a functional head on their shoulders know that these assholes will only grow bold with each sucesseful attempt and most likely, also more murderous. They arent smart criminals that know when to quit, THIS is their lives and they also know it will be their deaths. And lets face it, they made their choose of putting themselves at risk, of dying. Part of them seems to be already okay with the inevitability, you dont see old men in those positions afterall. And see it from the point of view from someone who owns the cargo and is responsible for the employees held hostage, the cargo matters very fucking much and you would rather not tell your employees' families that some brown monkeys decided to chimp out and kill their loved ones just to get the cargo. In the eyes of anyone that actually is sane, the lives of these bandits will always, ALWAYS, mean nearly nothing and its always going to be their own faults for bringing themselves to that position.

"Well you are still racist for it"

Im called racist almost daily, if thats how far your creativity goes, I can tell why you think that way. Or rather, have been told to think that way.
