Know what's funny? One of the better ways to mitigate PTSD symptoms is to confront the actual triggering incidents in a controlled setting. Doing it enough times will desensitize the brain, and help regulate the endocrine dump that is a panic attack. I spent many an hour driving round and round a parking lot with my therapist, past a box, to fix that little aspect of me. Iraq done fucked me up, yo.

People who're like, actually under treatment for PTSD learn things like this. Then again, people trying to get PTSD under control generally don't use it as a crutch to ham up sympathy points.

I'm being vaguely reminded of a post I saw circulating on Tumblr that people are so annoyed that war vets are the main face of PTSD. While I can feel that to a degree as PTSD can occur in those who have experienced significant trauma including but certainly not limited to war, I would rather have people who have seen and probably done some terrible shit being recognized as PTSD sufferers than these clownbag kids with anime and webcomics as triggers.

The problem the tumblrite crowd has with war vets and PTSD is recognition. If a war vet were to walk up to you and say "Hey man, could you turn that movie down a little, it reminds me of Iraq.", you'd likely turn it down.

Well, to the typical tumblrite, that's power. They turn around and cargo-cult it into their own little world, and we see crap like "trigger warnings". Invoking the magical PTSD works within the closed circle of the Tumblr cult, but outside of that, everyone is just going to laugh.

That's what pisses the typical tumblrite off. The PTSD ritual doesn't work when they invoke it on normals, and it makes them mad...whereas, the combat vet actually suffering from PTSD gets all that "power" and empathy.
