i present to you, the best selling game boy color games. and the games that started Generation 2.

Pokemon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. released for the Game Boy Color on october 2000.

fans in the pokemon community like to call thsi the best of the pokemon games.

the game takes place 3 years after the events of Pokemon Red,Blue,Green,Yellow,Firered, and Leafgreen. and is set in the Johto Region, right next to Kanto. the player takes control of Ethan, the male character, and Kris, the female character. and their rival is a guy named Silver.

after beating the champion lance, the player will now be able to go to Kanto and fight the gym leaders there.

and after beating them. they can go to Mt. Silver to fight Red. the protagonist from gen 1

the game introduced alot of mechanics that are uysed for the series.

two new types of pokemon. dark and steel.
the day and night cycle
berry farming
Held items.
different and unique pokeballs.
psychic types are no longer OP. ghost types now do super effective damage to them and bug types have more attacks.

pokemon Crystal also introduced the animated pokemon sprites.

Crystal also introduced the option to play as a boy or girl.

Crystal also added more subplots.

the game also introduced baby evolutions to pokemon, like Pichu for Pikachu and Raichu.

the problem with the game boy games though, the internal battery drains really quick. ALOT quicker than gen 1 cartridges.

some of the people here are even named after gen 2 pokemon from these games like @Dunsparce and @yawning sneasel and @Corsola

because of the game's popularity. it got remakes for the Nintendo DS. Pokemon Heartgold and Soulsilver

IT'S TOTODILE OP GOD DAMN IT
Now that this is out of the way, my favourite feature of this game always was the ability to have your pokemon follow you. I have no idea why they didn't bring it back, it made the adventure feel so much more personal. That being said, the biggest flaw of the game would have to be the Kanto content. The Kanto map is a too empty compared to the Johto map, and there are not enough trainers to level up to good levels, so you have to grind. Still, even the fact there are two regions in the game is cool as fuck and I am glad they did that.

solid remakes of arguably the best games in the series. LGPE is pretty fucking good and if they even consider content patches for it or DLC, it'll be the best entry, even though silver is mah boy.

I took the fire one, it took me months of saving my pocket money and when I finally had enough only the last store had still some in stock. I still own it together with my original red and blue. I'm almost nostalgic about those times wouldn't it be for the fact that I was beaten at school for having as the only child collected all 150 Pokémon.

Edit: the first time I played it was at a friend's house, on his pc where he had a Japanese rom, from where I don't know.

What a long time ago generation 2 was.

Geez I didn’t know anything about a balanced team when I was a kid, I just used the Pokémon I liked best which is was Totodile and I eventually got a badass lvl 100 Feralgatr.

Gold and Silver had internal clocks which were sadly prone to low battery life which meant you’d lose your save file. So I lost my old friend....

....but I saved him on my friends Pokémon stadium 2. It was such a surprise to see my old friend still alive, and in 3D! :)

I played GSC Silver to 100% completion. The only game in the series I've ever done that. I loved that game. Day in and out, day to night, it was the most immersive Pokemon game.

Strangely, I wasn't fond of the remakes much. And Pokemon in general is dying out for me.

Legit my favorite Pokémon game ever is Soul Silver. I thought the battle animations and 3D not grid based world of black and white mucked everything up. Just everything about the interface in HGSS was fast, simple, fun. watched a 2nd gen speed run race recently (totodile OP) and the robust colors, the music, the much more interesting story than 1st gen gave me a lot of nostalgia. Also the really Japanese culture of Jhoto is super cool.

Favorite part: rebattling gym leaders and the elite 4s get tougher too. The Pokémon colosseum was cute but battle frontier is where it’s really at.

Gen 2 is pure nostalgia for me, even more than Gen 1. The HGSS remakes feel timeless compared to Firered / Leafgreen. One thing that Gen 2 captures so well is the feeling of immersion. The day/night cycle made the world come to life more than anything else.

Gen 2 obviously still has its own problems, like the lack of actual Gen 2 Pokemon in Johto, but it's still one of the most solid entries in the series. If anyone wants to relive the good days of Gen 2, you should try Pokemon Prism. It's a fangame that has Gen 2 graphics along with Gen 4 Pokemon.

My first Pokemon game was blue.

No, not that blue.

There you go.

Having no knowledge of Pokemon, I took the quiz and got totodile as my man, and picked cyndaquil as my partner.
Years later, I play my 3rd mainline Pokemon game, soul silver, pick up totodile, and find that feraligatr is still my main man years later.

Don't fuck with my crocibro.

I can't bring myself to move on from Red, Blue, and Yellow still. I will eventually though.. I still play Gen 1 almost daily believe it or not:lol:

In case some haven't heard of this device, I highly recommend the ODROID-GO as a modern means to play GB, GBC, NES and a few other systems with. I have two of these and just love them. It's not like those retrominis or souljaboy quality junk. It's pretty nice and you assemble it yourself. It took me around 10 minutes. I also put an Atari 2600 emulator, C64, and Doom on it. Love it!

I'd also recommend Polished Crystal if you want a smoother level curve, optional alternative typing, expanded move sets, etc.

Cyndiquil is one of my favorite starters, hands down. HeartGold was also the first game I ever did a Nuzlocke on and I got a female starter.
