Part four, and finally one that makes me feel like we're making some actual progress here.

We finally meet our starter, for one thing.

00.png
When we last left off, Andy was cold, wet, and with Tesla leaving, alone in a city they didn't know.

Good start.

2.png3.png

To make things worse, the game is taunting us with more Pokemon we can neither fight nor take as our own.

4.png5.png

JUST LET ME PLAY THE GAME, PLEASE!

6.png

Andy is unable to say much, with the state he's been left in.

7.png8.png9.png

Then there's this guy. This guy's unique, for one reason.

10.png11.pngregion!

He offers us a way out.

12.pngme!
13.png
14.png

16.png

A mysterious narrator tries to get us to stay.

17.png

If Andy was in a better mood, he could actually do this.

18.pngevil lies within!

20.png

guilt-tripping does not work on people like Andy.

21.png
22.png
23.pngHoenn!

24.png

Again, on a better day, 100% in character.

25.png
26.png
27.pngof salted caramel sea salt ice cream.

28.pngwhatever lurks within the shadows...

29.png
30.png
31.png

From here you get the choice to go back to before the conversation, or to the title screen.

32.png

To the north of the pier, we can find the proper immigration gate.

33.png34.png

Well that would be a relief if I could FUCKING BATTLE ANYONE.

35.png36.png

...Shit. right now Andy's entire life is resting in Davy Jones locker. Please don't throw him out...

37.png38.png39.png

Yes, we do, but it's unverified. I don't know if that's a problem for you or not, but...

40.png41.png

Oh, it's that easy?

42.png43.png

That was easy. Wait, what happens if it's not verified? Do I just get tossed out on the street?

44.png

Wait, I'm a citizen now? I mean, I know we're supposed to be moving here, but... it's that easy?

46.png47.png Andy!

48.png

And we're finally in Gearen City! It actually looks quite nice. You really can't fault their spritework.

With that said...

There's multiple composers who have contributed, either with Remixes or original compositions. Most notable is probably GlitchxCity, a very notable remixer, particularly for Pokemon.

But there's one major problem with this: Glitch takes way too fucking long to get her songs started. It can be a whole minute before anything resembling the actual body of the song starts up. this means that you'll often get a music change still in the build-up, leading to a bit of a blue-balls feeling.

49.png50.png51.png

Asshole on this side won't let us go east without owning a pokemon...

52.png53.png

And creepazoid on the right is the same, thank god the Lab is just ahead.

54.png

I'm curious, kiwis: Do you think the broken light on the left is intentional or an error? Just curious.

55.png56.png

When we head in, we find Amanda. She immediately complains about us taking too long, and poor Andy just doesn't have the energy to protest.

57.png

She heads to the back of the building, we can talk to a few people around here to learn a little more.

58.png

This just makes black bars appear at the top and bottom of the screen for certain cutscenes. Andy says no, their day has been plenty cinematic for one lifetime.

59.pngefficiently!

Oh boy, he is not wrong. We're starting with 1500 - a fraction of what you start with normally - and it's not going to get better for a while.

60.png61.png

Sidequest, got it, I'll be back.

62.png

Thank god, because there's this Achievement for catching shinies and I was NOT interested in doing that at the normal rates.

63.png

Andy doesn't have the heart to tell her.

64.png

Foreshadowing?

65.png65a.png

66.pngspiritual energy...

Like the XY cannon thing?

67.png

Yes, yes it is. Also extremely obvious foreshadowing. But yes, creepy.

68.png69.png

Hmmm, this guy sounds important. We'll keep that in mind for later.

On the TV, we have two options. Andy picks news, hoping to get some information about the S.S. Oceana.

71.png

Your daily dose of breaking news!
I am your host, Volta! Let's get started!

72.png the S.S. Oceana.

Citizens claim that the ship was supposed to dock at a certain time, but never showed up!

74.png

75.png prevail, and look forward to the future!

76.png

So basically, they know less than Tesla. Great...

77.png

This is what the store offers. naturally, we're starting with very slim pickings.

78.png79.png

Good to know, thanks, random NPC man.

80.png81.png

This is the 'level cap' mechanic. Unlike Reborn, if a Pokemon reaches the cap here, they'll stop gaining exp. This means that it's a lot easier to prevent overlevelling... but any EXP that hits a cap is lost. Until we get certain mechanics, we'll be struggling to reach that cap without grinding, so this is important to know.

Most of the actual systems here we can't use yet, because we don't have a Pokemon. Amanda is there on the left, but there's two people just past here.

82.png

Gee, what's your problem?

83.png

Hmmm. I'm not sure if she's plot-relevant or just a new sprite.

84.png85.png86.png

So, someone who is even more distinctly plot-relevant wakes up the sleeping girl as we meet this new guy.

87.png

And they walk off while these two are talking.

If anyone remembers those two by the time they actually come up in the plot, I'll be extremely impressed. I certainly didn't.

88.png

89.png90.png91.png

Jan and Zumi are the two most notable developers for Rejuvenation. Jan is the lead, and Zumi does character art. Both their roles are pretty minor in this game story-wise, but they help run the league.

92.png

Where Amanda fits in irl is a bit of a mystery - it's unknown if Jan really has a sister. If not, she might be a stand in for amethyst, the original Reborn dev.

In lore, Amanda's more the 'face' of the league in terms of getting people started, while Jan does paperwork and helps out more in the background.

Anyway, Amanda needs to help us still, so Jan has to do his own busywork.

94.png95.png

Yes, we finally get to choose our starter!

96.png

After we bump into this girl, who... is definitely not plot-relevant in any way. No, sir.

We walk in to the Professor's room.

97.png98.png

99.png100.png

Are ya winnin', son?

Seriously, though, if you're going to have you're obviously suspicious foreshadowing, you shouldn't be having it in the middle of a quite open room, with a direct line of sight out to the public! Who is this guy?

101.png102.png

God damn, Jenner, keep your obviously suspect story straight, at least. We're already being held up from picking our starter because of this, don't make it worse!

103.png104.pngexplanation!

Oh don't you fucking start, Amanda, we are 100 pictures in ON THIS UPDATE ALONE.

They finally direct us to choose a starter.

105.png

Don't mind the weird angle in the next few pics, I had to redo this after I hamfisted the controls (the soft reset button is F12, the photo button is print screen. they're right next to each other, and I'm a brainlet. Accidents happen... costly, costly accidents.) And rushing the cutscene made the camera a little awkward. Just walking south then north fixes it.

107.png

At the end of this hall is a thing called the Random Machine.

108.png

Now, once upon a time, this could actually drop some special Pokemon as starters. I've heard things like Axew, Eevee, Riolu, and Ralts.

Unfortunately, people would just sit at the random machine and plug it a few hundred times. They eventually decided to stop giving that option. Reasonable, but far less fun than 'Jesus take the wheel'.

111.png109a.png

Each of the types has a little habitat, it's cute. Most of the Pokemon here don't move, except really weirdly for Oshawott, who is the most mobile I've seen a wandering character in a long while.

There's a different girl in the second panel because A: I wanted to give the Aevia supporters a shout and B: I fucked up the camera positions the first time and these things close after a bit.

That poor chimchar...

Anyway, I already know what I'm picking.

112.png

In most fan games, Torchic is the recommended choice because of how brokefuck Speed Boost is. Chespin isn't quite that good, but he's decently solid, with his hidden Ability being Bulletproof. It blocks certain bomb and blast moves, limiting enemy's options and making it much easier to switch in safely.

114.png

And if we're going with Andy as the character name, and we're choosing a grass type based on a tree, there's only one name I can give this guy.

115w.png

Because right now, Andy needs a friend, and maybe, he's got a friend in Woody.

117.png

After a few attempts, this is woody's IVs - pretty good for a random roll. His nature is Jolly, which is perfect both for Andy and for me as a player. He's got two of his stats at the max of 31, and a fairly weak Sp. Atk - but we're not gonna use that anyways. His ability protects him from a wide selection of moves with Bomb or Ball in their names - Such as Sludge Bomb or Shadow Ball. This can cripple an opponent's ability to respond if we play it right.

119.png119a.png

Is this what I think it is?

120.png

FINALLY! IT'S REALLY HAPPENING!

121.png

AFTER 3 WHOLE UPDATES AND OVER 300 SCREENSHOTS, WE ARE FINALLY BEGINNING A POKEMON BATTLE!

121a.png

LET'S

122.png

FUCKING

123.png124.png

GOoh, shit...

Amanda's choice is locked in, and Litten only scratches, so it's not as bad as it looks at first.

125.png

It scratches for 3 of our health until we growl it (I did it twice, the second time did nothing), and then I catch up to it in two vine whips. Woody's actually pretty good with the Same Type Attack Bonus and his high attack stat.

126.png

Litten gets a crit right at the end to put the fear of god into me, though.

127.png128.png129.png

Woody nearly goes up two levels, and we get a total of...

35 Poke for this. In most games, we'd be getting around ten times that.

Hoo boy.

130.png131.png

132.png132a.png

Running shoes will be a big help when I fuck up something and have to go back to my last save. The Pokeballs (5 of them) will be a big help too, but you always get 5 to start.

134.png135.png

1: Yeah, the line breaks are a little fucky at times.
2: What, so quickly? ...We're gonna have to fight again, aren't we?

136.png137.png

Before he can elaborate, a guy runs in from the south.

138.png139.png140.png

I like Ren. Compared to some of the assholes we're gonna meet, he's pretty nice and grounded.

141.png142.png143.png144.png

Called it.

145.png

...

146.png

This is a little shorter than the first match, for obvious reasons.

147.png148.png

Great, because nothing says 'great starter move' like a slow-buildup and innacurate attack.

149.png150.png

Yeah, we're really getting 35 Poke for plot-relevant battles... this is gonna be rough.

151.png152.png missions.

So according to Ren, he lost because he's not trained his Pokemon, only used Jenners.

So, two things from that:

1: He does not understand swap levelling.
2: He's possibly using pokemon at higher levels than number of Gym Badges allows. He says he's been in the Amethyst cave, which we won't get to until the next event.

Jenner asks him to do a task, and Ren deflects. I mean, dude, he literally just got back.
153.png154.png

Jenner's pretty understanding. I'd think he's a pretty good guy if I hadn't seen that obviously suspect meeting earlier.

155.png156.png

Or maybe he's just foisting the task on us...

157.png while ago.

Judging by hair colour, I'm guessing we ran into her on the way here.

158.png159.png

160.png161.png

Well shit, two advanced pieces of technology for being some girl's token black friend? Andy's down for that!

162.png

It's got both a region Map and a jukebox in it.

168.png169.png170.png

The jukebox spoils... seemingly just about every song in the game in alphabetical order. We won't be going there.

163.png164.png

One last thing I'd like to show you guys, too.
165a.png167.png171.png

All the names are pretty self-explanatory. The Stars exist out in the wild as mini-stations, Yellow ones are infinite, Red ones can only be used once per white-out. Basically, if you see a red star, buckle in, you're about to fight a boss. Just to give you some context on those.

54.png

With that done, Andy heads out onto the street, eager to get her adventure on the way. He's... battered and bruised, but he's got a good friend by his side, and that might be the start of something truly excellent.

When those creepy alien things attacked, Andy could do nothing but run and be saved. They weren't something Andy ever stood a chance against. Now, with Woody on her side, she might be able to launch... a counterattack.

At the end of the bleak day, it's a small ray of hope for him. And for now, that's enough.

I think the light is something is intented to be off. It is a neat detail if it is.

Also Is this going to be andy if woody faints once?

Do I feel your pain given how many times this has happen to me. I've made it a habbit to save before every battle for this reason.

I've said it before I'll say it again, this game has a long-ass intro secuence, three episodes in and we are now just past the starter choice and first rival battle.I like Chespin a lot, so good starter choice OP! I like the little foreshadowing with the facebook post at the end. I'm excited to see whats in store.

Good to know I'm not the only one who's had this problem.

You know, if Game Freak actually made their intros darker like this, I would buy it in a heartbeat.
