A POLICEWOMAN is suing her force for £200,000 for the “trauma” caused by watching hours of child sex abuse on up to 100 videos to crack a case. In what is believed to be the first case of its kind, Cara Creaby, 29, is seeking damages from the Metropolitan Police.

She is seeking damages for the “psychiatric injury” she says she suffered by being exposed to “harrowing” material while investigating the rape of three young girls.

The officer, who has been signed off sick since May 2015, says the experience caused “intrusive flashbacks and nightmares”, ruined her sex life and left her with post-traumatic stress disorder.

According to legal documents filed in the High Court, Mrs Creaby, from Hemel Hempstead, Herts, said she asked for help but was told by senior officers to “stick to the job in hand”.

Mrs Creaby joined the Met in 2009 and three years later was assigned to the Sapphire Unit handling child sex abuse cases.

In December 2014 she worked with the three victims of paedophile Michael D’Costa, 67.

He was jailed in 2015 for 16 years after admitting 25 sexual offences.

The court papers say that as chief liaison officer with the girls, aged between 11 and 13, Mrs Creaby formed an “emotional bond” which made it “especially harrowing” to have to watch film of them being sexually abused on videos found at D’Costa’s home in Wembley, north-west London.

According to her solicitor, David Mies at Slater and Gordon, her bosses offered no risk assessment, help or consideration of how to share the workload.

By March 2015 despite “visibly struggling” Mrs Creaby was allegedly still offered no support.

In April she was given reduced hours but still had to continue with D’Costa’s case which was in its closing stages.

A month later she was signed off sick and was then diagnosed with PTSD.

Mrs Creaby remains off sick but has since married and had a baby.

She is being supported by the Police Federation.

Its spokesman said: “It is vital that officers are provided with appropriate and ongoing workplace monitoring, supervision and assistance in order to protect their own health and wellbeing.”

Shit would fuck me up too. As long as the material she viewed was actually vital to closing the case I think her claim of trauma in the line of duty is legit. Not to say what she’s asking for is reasonable or not, just that she should be entitled to whatever help other officers get when traumatized in the field.

I'll put money on her not going to her supervisor to voice concerns about her mental condition.

While looking at child porn is traumatic (especially if you're forced to), it's part of the job for the police. You just have to tough it out.
It's not part of the job for most police and the expectation that police should "tough it out" was part of what led to police officers having a high rate of suicide, marital breakdown, and substance abuse. It's not regarded as best practice in modern policing.

For a long time now, the emotional/mental health toll taken on police (and other first responders) has been acknowledged and the obligation to put in place mechanisms to mitigate that harm has been regarded as part of occupational health and safety obligations.

Her primary complaint seems to centre around being offered insufficient support after making it known that she was having trouble coping with the case. That's a 100% valid reason for complaint.

Where it becomes interesting is that workers' compensation is no longer a strict liability issue in the UK so she will have to establish negligence on the part of her employer.

If you had to watch children (some barely old enough to walk) get raped, abused, and degraded day in and day out, it would fuck you up, too. It's either that or become completely detached from and numb about suffering, which tbh is still majorly fucked up. This is absolutely a necessary job (because otherwise disgusting child-raping cunts couldn't be brought to justice), but it's one that takes a heavy toll.

It's really sad that this lady asked for help and was just told "get back to work." Like, how hard is it to set up a therapy appointment or something?

I remember back in the day some sick ass was posting some CP on /b/, while on another thread some guy was claiming he was from the FBI doing one of those AMA type of things. I bitched at him that if he was legit, what the hell was he doing there when that other stuff was going on. I think moot back when he was legit got involved and both the FBI nut and the filth was taken away.

I had nightmares about that crap for a couple of days. It wasn't violent, but holy hell, I want to complain about deviant art people and such but that was disturbing as anything I had seen. The perv posted it in a random thread and it made a lot of us mad, normal /b/ jokes aside.

They should just advertise this position as open for volunteers because you're only gonna want to see this shit if you're already a pedo. Wham, bam, in the van. Simple.

Though more seriously, if there's a dirty job in the world, someone has to do it. I kinda feel like this is the one your get stuck with when you draw the short straw on the force because I can't imagine anyone going into this thinking it'll be an easy task.

She'd been on the unit for 3 years, so I doubt she expected it to be easy. We acknowledge that the burnout rate is high in professions which deal with child abuse day in, day out and we know that there's a horrifically high turnover of staff in those positions. Perhaps nobody should be in those roles continuously for long periods and/or there should be regular ongoing assessments of the impact the job is having on the mental well-being of the staff.

Wanted to make an off-colour joke about how her surname is just a typo of 'crybaby' but I really don't blame her if she asked for help from her higher-ups. Sounds like she was given too much to cope with by having to liaise with the victims themselves. Maybe she should have been reassinged, maybe with more liaison officers.

She was visibly struggling with a fairly big and stressful investigation, she reached out to seniors - did they want her to bungle the case or what?

They probably could have kept her on after reassigning her.

There's having to watch the video evidence of abuse and then there's having to be liaison officer with three victims that were in the very tapes you had to watch. Why did they have her do both?
