It's the same way as in pro wrestling. Wrestlers in the big promotions don't usually own their gimmicks, the promotion does.

There are some potential downsides. Erik Rhodes noted that 1) his stage name was picked by his first producer and 2) because he didn't do the research, he didn't realize that it had effectively locked him into the beefcake image because of the recognition/expectations associated with it.
