They also did Cooking Mama where you kill and chop up bloody animals. My niece played it when she was pretty young and was scared to death of Cooking Mama for a long time. They make these web games appealing to children and then whack you over the head with disgusting imagery. I believe they had a Pokemon flash game or cartoon too.

I remember playing the Pokémon flash just to see how bad it was, and it got pretty bad. Aside from the disgusting images they gave as "rewards" for beating up the human characters, it was also awful from a character perspective as well. You had Cheren as an abusive drunk and Prof. Juniper as a psychotic animal tester, but Ash's characterization took the cake. They took the absolutely kindhearted trainer who regularly endangered himself to protect his mons and made him into a slave-driving ringmaster who demands that Pikachu go back into his pokeball before their battle (you know, the one that he hasn't been in since the first episode). It ended with the mons joining Team Plasma, even though PETA admitted they knew about the twist with Ghetsis (this was before B2W2 depicted the split between those that genuinely wanted to help Pokémon and the aspiring tyrants wanting to be the only people with mons). Again, it was playable from a gameplay perspective, but it was pretty bad from a non-gameplay perspective

It has been said that the design of magypsies from Mother 3 are the reason why Nintendo won't release it in the west. They're stereotypical looking drag queens/transexuals which would undoubtly bring the ire of the PC crowd.

In universe, they're neither man or woman but I'm sure Nintendo would still catch some flak for this which I can understand they don't want to have to deal with.

Besides that, there's that one scene where one of the main characters is involved in an implied rape scene (although nothing is shown) and there's a part in the game where the characters take magic mushrooms.

Forget video games themselves, try reading any video game magazine from the 2000s and you will be utterly flabbergasted by the amount of stuff that wouldn't fly today, we're talking dick jokes, sexist comments, T&A photos, throwing around words like "trannies" or "shemale" and the endless assumption that you, the reader, are male, why wouldn't you be? Complete with endless "how to get your GIRLFRIEND to play games!" articles, pick any random issue of any random magazine from about 2007 and below and you are guaranteed to find something that's politically incorrect today.

To say the cultural climate surrounding video games used to be very different is to make an understatement on the level of "the sun is kind of warm"

The thing is the peak dudebro era of games journalism was already over by the end of the 2000s, if for no other reason than so many magazines had folded by that point, whatever magazines were left or changed into different forms adopted a more neutral tone, before they decided to get into blatant haranguing around the time of 2012.



What's ironic is Arkham Knight was already a bit toned from from Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, you can no longer see Ivy's ass for example, as things were already getting pretty Woke in 2015, but it was also a transitionary period, so Arkham Knight still had a pretty sexy Catwoman and Harley.

While the Batmobile stuff can get tedious I really like Arkham Knight and think it's underrated because for one thing it's one of the last AAA games developed in the west to still have sexy women in it.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but the implied sexual assault scene in Grandia 2. The main character grabs that chick's ass when they're crawling through the pipe over the town border, and gets slapped in the face for his troubles. You don't see anything, but that definitely wouldn't fly today.

Also, that trio of female bosses who dress like dominatrices, and their entire rhetoric is about beating and whipping men, torturing them in weird sexual fashion. Come to think of it... that would probably get green lighted.

They're almost extinct in the US, Game Informer is tied now only to Gamestop and Wal-Mart introduced a store exclusive gaming magazine, but I don't see a single video game related magazine in grocery stores, there are a few I've seen in bookstores, but we're talking you can probably count the number of US magazines still being published on 1 hand.

The entire concept of gaming journalism is basically dead, websites are now just hollowed out shells like Kotaku, they decided to push so hard in the direction of attaching gaming journalism to political propaganda that they fucked the whole thing in the ass and ruined it, now gamers are back to just discussing among themselves what's worth playing like an online version of schoolyard, school bus discussions.

You have to buy the special edition for those things. Many games still come with them and now they're hardcover and leather bound. They can also double as an art book sometimes as well.

I have a few of the high quality leather bound instruction manuals form the 90's and the modern ones are made out of higher quality material, they've upped their game since becoming a premium item. But nothing compares to the text books that came with Maxis games.

It's part of the reason why I don't buy PC games since they went all digital, consoles will still provide the huge fuck off boxes, the instruction books, and all the physical items in the special edition, just like how PC games used to do.

I wish Sony stuck with manuals since they're fun little extra and tone setters and if you're buying a first party Sony game you're likely to be buying it on disk.

Sony did some of the coolest manuals I've seen back in the day, the manual for War of the Monsters was framed as an in universe news magazine (or something like that), the manual for the original God of War was really cool, with a Greek pottery art aesthetic, the manual for the Uncharted was Drake's journal of course, for Resistance it was a soldier's journal and the manual for Resistance 2 was incredible, it was an in universe Popular Mechanics type magazine complete with propaganda art for the war effort and even pin up girl photographs, that was maybe the only instance where the manual was better than the actual game, not that Resistance 2 was bad, but I'm telling yeah, the manual was really "wow"

I think Resistance 2 was the last time Sony really went all out like that though, after that manuals got simpler, then black and white, then vanished completely.

It's too bad because when they were done well they were a great way to get hyped for playing a game, like I said I think Sony should have stuck with it just to make their games stand out a bit more, I wonder what manuals for PS4 first party games could be like? For The Order 1886 I envision a Victorian London era newspaper, for Spider-Man PS4 I picture a Daily Bugle newspaper and for Ghosts Tsushima I envision something with a Japanese calligraphy aesthetic.

Wasn't it in Diablo 2 you get a handbook with the Story of Diablo 1 written in the perspective of Deckard Cain.

What I never used were those empty pages at the end of the manual for notes. That was wasted paper in my eyes.

Right now you have both camps for Switch and Playstation generally unhappy, this is a prime environment for such a thing to occur.

After the last Nintendo direct, you have the traditional Nintendo die-hards getting so upset that Nintendo isn't catering to them. They hate xenoblade, they hate Nintendo is giving people lolicon anime porn games like xenoblade, xenoblade just upset Earthbound's record for most expensive Nintendo RPG, they hate the new pokemon and they couldn't pre-order zelda due to bots. You're having the regular Nintendo youtubers threaten to go full playstation because Nintendo lost it's magic. They want the gamecube and Wii era back(gamecube and wii era was when Nintendo had a noticeable decline in quality from their classic era, so they're that desperate).

On playstation, nobody can still fucking buy the playstation 5 still, so any new game announcements are useless. You have people who are not happy that old ps3 and ps4 playstation games are getting ports to PC and who are cursing the name of Jim Ryan like a wine aunt who's on her 6th bottle, the final fantasy 7 announcement also got people upset because it's more pressure to buy a PS5 when there's no stock to be had.

And to further add to this, Capcom, Sony, Bandai Namco and Sega all got rid of top people within like a month. Now for the people who left Sony it's already known they're forming their own studios But Bandai holy shit they did a full on restructuring of their company from top to bottom and are planning an Online convention called Bandai Next which is rumored to be specifically for a western audience. So you're getting a few companies who were formerly more secluded and aloof now wanting to dump money into markets that they were hesitant to do so in the past.

I think we may even get a surprise appearance from Disney because if the Nintendo theme park eats into their their park profits you bet they're going to run smear pieces. Just like what happened when Sony removed Spiderman from the MCU for like a week.

I really hope interesting times are ahead, because right now we're in a lull where everything is gridlocked regardless of what platform you're on. I want to see corporations duke it out like it used to be.
