Pretty much, yeah, in terms of design. He's a generic adventure game protagonist, hapless everyman kind of guy who does an epic quest to be a hero, so I don't think they ripped off Monkey Island any more than they did other point-and-click adventure games. Most of them are similar.

Heck, I remember a critic in OPM giving the original Drakengard a bad review solely because he found something in the game's storyline offensive, which anticipates the modern Kotaku style of gaming journalism, but that was in 2004.
A poorly copied Dynasty Warriors/Ace Combat clone and that's what they home in on?

Alot of this has been "corrected" in Runescape3, but still exists in Old School Runescape.

-An Arab themed town where everybody is named "Ali". The town is known for cheapskates and scams and everybody being named Ali is a reference to the popularity of the name Muhammad in the Arab world.

-In the southernmost jungles of karamja there is a black character model that is aggressive and called a "jungle Savage"

-In West Ardougne there is a questline that ends with a plague being manufactured by a government to mislead people

-In Varrock there is a fortuneteller character named "Gypsy" who is featured in many different quests. The character is actually very important and often saves the day. However, the term gypsy is considered the equivalent of the n-word to the Roma people.

-The White Knights of Falador are considered the good knights, while the Black Knights are considered evil. There is a mini quest that encourages you to kill thousands of Black Knights to get collectible White Knight armor.

-To become a white knight investigator/detective you need to complete a series of trials. One of these trials is to kill somebody who cannot be killed by any man. This is done by getting a physical sex change from the makeover mage. You get a free coupon to reverse the sex change after finishing the quest. Self identification ain't enough, only magic can change your sex.

-There are two types of goblins. The surface goblins are very stupid and warlike, while the underground goblins are very intelligent and timid. These goblins are only separated by a couple thousand years of evolution.

-Other than the White Knight quest, there are several quest lines in the story that go differently depending on what sex you have. To become the King/Queen of Miscellanea you must enter a heterosexual marriage with either a prince or princess. No gay rights in this Kingdom.

-In a certain village in the great desert below Al-Kharid is a village where putting on any Saradomin (good God) armor will result in you being attacked by all the villagers. Fatwa moment.

-The Pyramid Plunder and Agility Pyramid mini games are based around the player appropriating cultural artifacts to sell to collectors.

-The Cold War questline is about communist penguins plotting to overthrow humanity.

Hey, old skool Gamer Bro Dudes, which of you is old and creaky enough to remember this outdated piece of gaming culture:

1 - see videogame
2 - pay money
3 - get videogame
4 - play videogame

Craaaaazy, right? Man, how did we ever even live without being able to pay for extra savegame slots or the DLC with the real ending? Man those were such primitive times, us cavemen with games we actually owned!

Jak 2 is another infamous review that sticks out in my memory, they gave Gary Steinman, who was the resident JRPG geek, an action platformer to review and he really struggled with it, giving it a meh review simply because he found it too hard.

Jak 2 certainly had some tough moments but I never found the game hard enough to knock points off it's score for, dumb review.

Ghost Hunter is another game I was thinking of, OPM trashed it, but I found it interesting enough to actually buy the game and I loved it, your instincts were always better trusted than critics.

It's cool that PSM liked the game though, but I was never a regular reader of them unlike OPM, I would only get PSM on occasion, so I must have missed their review.
A local mag had a good setup. Earthbound was a good example of how it worked, there was the large 2-3 page review and a final score that weighed in graphics and bullshit, but there were also two jRPG guys on staff giving it their personal score. One gave it a 6/10, the one that wrote the review gave it a personal 9/10(I think), both had roughly 2500 characters to explain their reasoning and they were both fair. Make your choice.

Best part was that Earthbound was one of many jRPGs that were never slated to be released in Europe, a couple of nerds just really wanted to review games like those because some readers would be interested in them and in the back of the mag the company that is now THQ Nordic advertised their gray-import NTSC and jap games. Hardly any jRPGs were released over here so this was the way things worked.

What's the story with that, anyway? Is it because the Mega Drive outsold Nintendo consoles in the UK?
I don't really know. Translation could be pretty weird with how text was compressed down into words and not always phrases or a script, to save space, maybe the translation effort to french/italian/german and the creation of sprite fonts would be too much at the time?

They did localize a few titles into French and German, and the result was horrific.

Oh, they localized some into Swedish, a population of several millions... Imagine the crew and time behind that.

It was actually pretty decent in the case of Shadowrun, Bergsala had a special relationship with Nintendo and afaik they still have it. That's an interesting story and unless things have changed they still hold exclusive distribution rights of anything on any Nintendo platform.
