“The Powerpuff Girls” could soon fly again. Variety has learned that a live-action version of the classic Cartoon Network series is in development at The CW.

In the updated version of the series, the titular superheroes are now disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting. Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?

The project hails from writers and executive producers Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and David Madden will executive produce via Berlanti Productions. Warner Bros. Television will produce.

The original “Powerpuff Girls” was created by Craig McCracken. In that series, Professor Utonium accidentally created the elementary school aged super team of Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup by combining sugar, spice, and everything nice with the mysterious Chemical X. The show ran for six seasons and 78 episodes between 1998 and 2005. “The Powerpuff Girls Movie” was released in 2002, while a rebooted animated series began airing on Cartoon Network in 2016.

Should the show go to series, it would check multiple boxes for The CW. The network and Berlanti have built up a large swath of superhero programming via the DC Universe, while also placing an emphasis on representation for people of color and women onscreen. The CW has also found great success in programming more adult-themed reboots of beloved IP, such as what they did with the Archie Comics franchise and “Riverdale,” another Berlanti production.

Regnier is currently under an overall deal with Warner Bros. Television. Her past credits include the recent “Veronica Mars” revival, “SMILF,” “iZombie,” “Falling Skies,” and “Sleepy Hollow.”

She is repped by UTA and Hansen Jacobson.

Cody is best known for writing the critically-acclaimed comedy feature “Juno,” for which she won the Academy Award for best original screenplay in 2008. Her other films include “Jennifer’s Body” and “Young Adult.” She also co-created the Amazon comedy series “One Mississippi” alongside Tig Notaro and Showtime’s “United States of Tara” starring Toni Collette.

She is repped by WME, MXN, and McKuin Frankel Whitehead.

Why does Powerpuff Girls of all shows have to suffer repeated failed woke reboots?? It was a good show in its day, leave it be.

Why would you do this? How does this setting relate to the original series at all? In what world does it make sense?

It doesn't, obviously. The only question is to which proportions are cynical corporate hackery and cancerous SJW underminery to blame for this abomination of an idea.

"Disillusioned 20 somethings sad about 'lost childhood' fighting crime" sounds like the kind of anti-good shit SJWs love, they hate the notion of fighting evil. We'd know for sure if they are to blame when we find out about the casting. If they have trans joggers and Muslims as the girls, we will know it was SJWs for sure behind this.

If the casting is more mainstream, with only one token sheboon, maybe a quasi-cute Asian, I'd suspect more corporate motivation.

In either case this is blasphemy and all involved should be shot. (In Minecraft.)

not to sound like a fag but aren't we tired of this whole "subversion" bullshit? you would think the MCU playing things straight for the most part would lead to more media being rather earniest with just a hint of snark. with how many people are stuck in arrested development nowadays wouldn't a tv series that just followed the same plots that were used in the original be considered great?

no disillusionment just more of the same Jay Ward-esque comedy of the original. Basically like a tv version of the George in the Jungle film.

I could have sworn this exact premise was made as some kind of youtube video a couple years ago or something, except it had the decency to be animated.

So when can we expect to see Tara Strong bitch about how she wasn't cast for the role of Bubbles?

I guess Tara Strong won't bitch it about it because she don't want to be associated to this future flop.

The staff of Clownfish TV said to kill it with fire.

One Youtuber gived me some chuckles.

Yep I can see it now. You have super feminist Blossom who is great at everything. Nerdy and “quirky” Bubbles who can’t shut up. Buttercup is a drug addict and lesbian because she is a tomboy in the original show. All of them are going to be teenagers played by 30 year olds and like teenagers in CW shows are all going to be vastly superior to their parents and surrounding adults. Mojo Jojo will go from a calculating evil genius monkey to toxic male and Him will go from a malicious and all powerful demon wishing to see the destruction of the universe to a serial killer who is actually misunderstood because he is transgender
